While libertarians will rail about the entire part and parcel of gov't involvement, what about things like _requiring_ insurers to offer viagra in their drug plans (at the then price of $10 a pill)? Or requiring carriers to offer an encompassing set of benefits, of which some/most of those are of no interest to the consumer (ie- mandatory maternity services to a single male, or an elderly couple). These are the kinds of things that are driving up the costs of premiums.

I wouldn't go so far as to say it has only 1 impediment. I can think of a few others... primarily the fact that visiting a doctor is not significantly different today vs 60 years ago.

But the impact of regulation is just not realized. I work for an HMO, and many of the decisions on how we spend money enhancing the systems we have are molded and shaped by these various, assorted regulations. We have to offer specific, expensive benefits packages due to assorted laws like "mental health parity" (which cost us millions of dollars to enhance our systems in 2000), and a recent series of laws involving durable medical equipment has caused us to spend a lot of time on ensuring compliance with the new regulations. (with few fixes fortunately).

    Not anymore. Not since 98.

Since Windows ME/XP/2000 have all come out this has gone out the window.

Which asus board are you referring to? For mine, to get sound to work I had to download drivers from the net (oops- the on board nics didn't work either ... where's that Asus CD?) to get Windows 2000 or XP to work with it. Same with 98 actually. So what's the difference between running linux with an Asus A7N8X deluxe MB and XP? For XP I need another CD with 2+ year old drivers. Linux worked with sound when I used Gnoppix. Gnoppix 2.6 (I think) worked with the 3com nic and the previous version of Gnoppix worked with the Nvidia Nic.

    I can.

As I wrote in the forums, I ran Gnoppix off of a CD and it detected my sound card and nvidia nic out of the box. An updated Gnoppix cd version supported the 3com nic (the one I used to access the net at the time) as well. Windows XP requires drivers installation off the web or from the CD ASUS included with my A7N8X mb, otherwise my NICs and Sound wont work at all.

Windows driver support "works" only in the sense that for every piece of hardware out there, there is a near certainty that hope exists it will work in windows XP, 2000 or 98 because a driver will almost certainly exist. But you'll need to keep that cd, or download the drivers (or updated ones) off the web, kind of like you would if you were running linux. So what exactly is the advantage again?

I will probably never take the time to do this (out of need) but in no particular order:

That $30 router won't work when a new set of protocols comes out. You'll have to buy a brand new router to support g (if you buy a b one) or if a whole new standard comes out. With this project, you can add a new WLAN card to support the protocol & maintain use of the older ones.

Configurability. I'm sure more technically able people will be able to get their routers to do more useful things than they could with my belkin router. Port forwarding could be improved, as well as DMZ features. (my belkin router doesn't do the former very well and the DMZ feature of the belkin router does not work.) You can also set alerts so that if you find your network being scanned/attacked, the router can alert you immediately, whereas that $30 router doesn't.

This is a neat little project, particularly if you have much of the hardware already. I have a couple of computers I need to set up; if I can turn them into routers (wireless or not) that would make them more useful to me than if they were sitting there collecting dust.

I don't think we should look at 11 year olds having sex as being something we can or should do nothing about, and resign ourselves to accepting that 11 year olds having sex is a "Good Thing".

  15. Re:There is something wrong here. on U.S. Pushing Conservative Science · · Score: 1

I need to chime in on the sex education thing because the argument always seems to be either-or.

1> Abstinence is the best way to prevent transmission of disease or pregnancy
2> Latex Condoms are not 100% effective in preventing either.
3> Latex Condoms are far less effective or uneffective with Hepetitis B/C viruses, and possibly other virii like Human papilloma.
4> I do not know about the newer non latex condoms and have not read anything about their effectiveness with either
5> Lambskin condoms had the same effectiveness for pregnancy but could pass HIV (and presumably other virii) so they are not recommended as protection against HIV.

The argument against Lambskin seems similar to the argument against Latex regarding viruses other than HIV. (Hepetitis primarily). I fail to see why advocates of condom use/distribution fail to see these similarities and can acknowledge that telling kids to play 'russian roulette" and pray that their partner is not infected with Hepetitis and to go ahead and use condoms is a bad thing. They don't advocate doing this with HIV, obviously.

Ultimately, the best solution is to teach teens both abstinence and condom use, since it sounds more realistic, and more honest.

The areas where I'd have some difficulty replacing windows with, say, Linux would be:

1> Email. I'm not sure what linux client would work as "nicely" as outlook express does.
2> Synchronization with my palm pilot. This is becoming less important at home, since most of my syncs and entry of data is done at work. But apps like Avantgo and the like are things I use every day at home.
3> USENET. I started out reading usenet on trn, but I'm not sure I can move from Forte Agent & Xnews to TRN.
4> Irc. Sure I can use Epic or BitchX, but mirc works fine for me and I'm very comfortable with it. I'm not comfortable with using BitchX to chat on multiple channels, or msg people as well.
    5> Office apps.
6> "MultiMedia". From Winamp to Divx to every other codec under the sun used to encode avis, mpgs and the like. Much of that goes away when you abandon windows.
    7> Yahoo/AIM/ICQ messengers & chat rooms.
8> Digital camera and CF reader

While most of these things are doable in Linux, they're certainly not doiable with the ease I have in windows. Of these, I think email is the easiest to get over but the hardest to transition- I can deal with using pine for email, but how do I convert 60 megs of emails in OE into something usable in linux?

That's kind of lame that a vague announcement of a new Microsoft product (Xdocs) which is only going to work in the new version of office (11) which will only work on Win2K or XP or the next version of Windows suddenly means that PDFs are going to whither away and die.

Nevermind the widespread usage of pdf files today. Where I work, we use PDF files to store contracts, and we'd just spent hundreds of thousands of dollars in a huge project to automate the conversion of post script files into PDFs that are now accessable over the web. I can guarantee that there's no way we'd switch from PDF to Xdocs... at least not for another 5 years.

The analysts who made their remarks about Adobe should realize that MS tried this before (sort of) when they started distributing .doc readers for free in an attempt to turn ubiquitous .docs into .pdf killers. Anyone remember those doc (and .xls too) readers?
