  2. LaserJet 4050 or 4100 on Choosing a Personal Printer For the Long Haul · · Score: 1

Some of the most rock solid dependable office grade printers are the HP LaserJet 4050 and 4100. These have small improvements over the 4000 and they lack the "smart chip" of the 4200 and 4300 toner cartridges that inhibit remanufacturing. Drivers are a non-issue with the Postscript models and you can connect via serial, parallel port, or ethernet. These are some of the last printers designed before Fiorina took over and ran the ship into the ground. You can find them and their accessories for a song on eBay these days.

  6. Re:Let's be honest here. on Why Games Cost $60 · · Score: 1

Before the advent of CD based consoles the manufacturing costs for the cartridge based games were more significant. There is significant overhead in producing masked ROMs just on their own. Then you add in the tendency for added costs for features like battery backup and more support chips to supplement an aging console design. All of a sudden you have a cartridge that represents a significant investment just to make and the retail pricing has to allow for that. The switch to CDs allowed for much more profitability by keeping the old pricing model for a product that can be mass produced for pennies. The only benefit here is the possibility of rolling back prices for popular "classic" games that have been out for some pre-existing amount of time. This allows the publishers to rake in more cash by appealing to both the hardcore players as well as the cheapskates.

  14. Re:Problem? on Snow Leopard Snubs Document Creator Codes · · Score: 1

It isn't a stupid extra step. If the creator app isn't installed then it's wise to use whatever available app can handle the document. On the linked page someone made the important observation that this will completely break the proper behavior when using multiple graphic design apps that use their special flavor of eps with metadata as their document format. Without using a creator code you can't launch the right app for a document.

I've never allowed WGA to be installed. I still get all updates. You have to be on your toes and scan through all updates because they like to sneak it in from time to time even though you've refused it before. They tried to do that when SP3 was rolled out. Obviously, anyone using automatic updates is already hosed.

  16. Where's Technic? on How Hollywood Tie-Ins Saved Lego · · Score: 5, Interesting

Apparently, the ex found out about it when he brazenly took the mistress to a business party instead of her.

It wasn't exactly reverse engineered in the truest sense of the term since the IBM manuals included the full source code to the original PC BIOS. 24. Most of the CO2 comes from calcination on Green Cement Absorbs Carbon · · Score: 4, Interesting

The summary doesn't explain things very well. Just to set things straight, most of the CO2 emissions from portland cement production is not from the fuel burned in the kilns but from the gas released by the limestone itself during the calcination process. The only real incentive for the use of energy efficient kilns is to reduce fuel costs and not to reduce emissions. The upside is that cement will reabsorb much of the released CO2 as it cures over the course of time.
