  1. Local stations? on Satellite Radio - XM vs. Sirius? · · Score: 1

I've been interesting in getting an XM radio myself, however I simply cannot live without my local talk radio station. Can you still pick up conventional radio stations with a satellite radio?

  2. Re:Original Trilogy? on George Lucas May Be Completely Evil · · Score: 1

1: They are not completed...not to George Lucas. And until he says they're completed, they are not completed. Total control, and all.

2:I agree. That's why I don't agree with Lucas's decision to tinker with the original trilogy, but it is his trilogy to tinker with and if that's what he feels properly represents his films and his vision, more power to him. I think it will be damaging to film history, as future generations won't be able to see the cutting edge special effects of the late 70s/early 80s, but the standard technological achievements of the late 90s. But again, if this is what Lucas wants to do, as the sole creative controller...he has that right.

  3. Original Trilogy? on George Lucas May Be Completely Evil · · Score: 1

The complaints and demands for George Lucas to release the "original" (defined as the Non-Special Edition cuts) trilogy on DVD, as it was originally presented in the theatres...

I'm a film student, and I've read and understand why Mr. Lucas won't do that. He doesn't consider the "original" versions of the films to be the completed versions. They are work prints, demo copies (as it were) to Lucas. Asking him for the "original" cuts of the films is like asking for a work print...That's not the way he wants people to see them so he's not going to release *his* films in any way but the way he wants. That's why there really isn't a Special Edition...there's only the original Trilogy (the "original" versions are like unsupported betas....use at your own risk).

And as a film student I can respect that. I certainly wouldn't want people seeing a subpar cut of my films..especially if it was something as popular as Star Wars. However, I wouldn't have updated the special effects because that detracts from the original effects and effects artists...but that's another plate of worms. But they are Lucas' films...he can and will do whatever it is he feels is right..and people will either buy them (the vast majority), or complain about this CG character or that effect or whatever.

Special note, I did not like the original trilogy a whole lot..but I adored Episodes I and II. I don't see why people hate Jar Jar so much..it's not like he was vital to the plot or detracted so much from the film. But hey, if you don't like it go watch the Phantom Edit or the original trilogy another six times. ;) To each their own, I guess.

  4. Very strange.. on Xbox Price Drops to $200 · · Score: 1

Isn't is lovely how the Xbox, that big port box, has been out since November last year and they've already issued a price drop? Now I bought my PS2 on launch day, (same with the Cube and all my other systems) and I happily paid $300 for it (and eBay'd the other two I bought for $500), and now a year+ later they're bringing down the price..that's fine. But if I just purchased an XBox in November for $300 plus the DVD add on yadda yadda...I'd be highly pissed right now. By dropping the price this much this soon you basically spit in the face of early adopters. I'd be interested to see how much pull this gets Microsoft with gamers, as we haven't been that impressed with the Xbox and it's lackluster ports as of late.

Very strange practice, lowering the system price six months after launch. I have a feeling it'll turn more people off than get them to buy one, but what the hell do I know? I do know this, until the Xbox has serious first-party game development behind it (Halo doesn't count), or some good third-party support it won't be taken seriously. The Big N has Miyamato, Rare, Retro, and all their internal stuff. Sony has Square, Capcom, Konami, Enix, and friends so they've got good third-party software that's exclusive (for a while, anyway). Microsoft? Halo and PC ports. Bright future indeed.

  5. Bad & GB on Mashed-Up Music · · Score: 1

I found a mix like that before, using Ghostbusters and Bad. It sounded really neato actually, the GB music with the Bad voicals. Highly amusing, to say the least. It's available on Audiogalaxy, I know.

  6. Port box on Xbox Price Drops For Australia And Europe · · Score: 1, Troll

The X-box is nothing more than a port system. Lack of original, exclusive games that people want, coupled with it's PC-lite interface make it a handy attraction to Edios and Activision and others looking to make a quik few bucks by porting some of their PC/PS2 titles.

This is a last ditch effort to boost sales in third markets while ignoring the total lack of sales in Japan, and the poor sales here in America. After E3 when Sony announces the Playstation 2's price drop, Microsoft will either follow suit (only a few months after launch for a price drop sure would piss off a number of folks) or suffer the consiquences of being $50-$100+ above the cost of the PS2 and Nintendo's Gamecube. Wither and die, shitty port box. ;)

  7. Re:Free speech? on Senate Bill Would Make Clandestine Video Taping Illegal · · Score: 1

What negative outcome could this have? Well I for one sure as hell don't want the Federal Government telling private industry what they can and can't call their websites. Forget protecting children (a side issue in the whole scheme of things), I'm for as little power being given to the government as possible. And seeing as this comes from a traditionally left-wing (AKA: Liberal) Senator, it makes all the more sense.

Slashdot...Right Wing? What? This place is one of the shelters of liberal thought on the Internet, or that's how it seems by reading some comments on here. Anyway, so what? This is nothing more than Senator Depends (Leahy), playing partisian politics as usual by using this issue to get votes for him and his party. That's the only reason kids, he's using this issue to try to support himself (as most Democrats do, oddly enough). When enough people (as in political donors, not the public) cares enough about this bill it'll get out of committe and on the floor, but until then we're going to have "couragous" Senators like this leftist piece of shit using stall tactics as a way to say he's done something on this issue. Garbage.

  10. MST Notes on MST3K "Manos" Arrives on DVD · · Score: 3, Informative

Firstly: Thank the gods other people think having Mike and the Bots on every DVD would be a good thing. And hey, they could have a short host segument before the movie, then the movie, then another short one after the flick. It'd be great! ;)

Secondly: The reason Best Brains/Rhino doesn't put out whole seasons is because of the film rights. After many of these..."classic" flicks were shown to Joel/Mike and the Bots, the copyright holders quickly jacked up the price of using the films. Some people, like Sandy Frank, didn't know what Best Brains was doing to their movies, and they were furious. So for a lot of the movies, the rights have expired and the cost of getting them for video distribution is (apparently) higher than projected sales.

Now what I find interesting is that Best Brains themselves has released some new episodes on video. The thing is that Rhino's not involved in it, and they're from the Sci-Fi Channel years. They're available at mst3kinfo.com. That means that Best Brains owns the rights to these movies, and arn't going through a disto such as Rhino. Very interesting. Maybe people could lobby BBI hard enough that they'd release DVDs (Doubtful, but it never hurts).

And lastly, Sci-Fi is removing MST from their lineup after December. So watch and tape now, or check around for episodes. eBay has some general episodes, and private citizens have been known to have a large episode as well as rare tape collection. ;)

  11. I can't believe no one... on Best Sci Fi Currently On Television? · · Score: 1

Has not mentioned the best form of Science Fiction on television....Mystery Science Theater 3000. But no, my precious MST3K was killed by Sci-Fi (3 days from now, it'll be two years) to give Fartscape and First Wave, what they define as "hard sci-fi", a better place on television. Despite having a very low budget and costing next to nothing to make, despite having an audience without ANY promotion or advertising, and despite the fact that it should have been in it's prime time line up, it was shuffled to the Sunday 11:00 PM EST timeslot. It's so not fair. ;)
