Come on. I'd like to think that Americans have grown up a little bit since the cold war. BTW, communism is actually a VERY good concept. Support everyone, regardless of their abilities to work. Welfare, Social Security, Unemployment are all basically communist programs. Communism is great in theory, it's just fallen apart in every real world trial. It's really a shame. I personally would like nothing more than a world in which money doesn't exist.
Isn't that like saying that a pentium w/ a 64bit video card is a 64bit system? After all, pentiums had a 64bit memory bus, and your video card performance is very important in system performance for games and other things of the sort. Or hell, let's have a dual pentium and a 128bit video card. It doesn't work like that.
It's better than ABC. From what I understand ABC is forbidden from reporting anything negative about its parent company Disney. Atleast MSNBC has an occasional Anti-MS news story.
If I remember correctly wasn't OS/2 Warp "The totally cool way to run your computer!" I can just picture the army of 12 year olds they highered to come up with that slogan.
Yes and no, they got toasted, and then they wrote a really big check. (Well big by our standards, bill gates probally found the money in his sofa or something)
I don't think the patent issue applies to hardware decoders. If I remember correctly with dvds the only thing that is patented is the encryption. Since the dvd hardware handles the decryption the software player doesn't need access to the patented routines. IIRC the only real information needed on the creative labs dxr2 card is how to use the mpeg-2 decoder.
I was just doing a comparison of how the page looked in Netscape vs. IE (i'm really bored). And in IE I noticed some text over that blue border on the left. It was collored white so it didn't show up anywhere else, in netscape the text fell completely within the white background. Here it is:
"The preeminent online programmers journal and resource for software developers, programmers, web builders and information technology professionals working on software development, web building, programming and need programmers news and updates. "
The SGI version of photoshop is ancient, 3.0. I'm pretty sure adobe has completely scrapped their UNIX market, a really dumb move IMHO, but then again, I don't own a huge company so what do i know?
This article was already posted, it was wrong then and it's wrong now. First off the authors had nothing to do with it. All that happened is some guy named GossiTheDog ran the program through a decompiler and spent about 5 minutes working on it. Also, he must have used a really crappy decompiler since it can't even recompile the code. With a decent recompiler you should at the very least been able to compile the code. Not to mention that given the authors attitude about the program being used to pirate n64 games they will most-likely never release the source code. And the legal troubles that everyone is talking about are unfounded. Nintendo said that they have not ruled out the possibility of suing the two people who wrote it. But they also have yet to make any formal contact with the two people who wrote the emulator. It really pains me to see wired news report this story, it puts them at the level of zdnet IMHO.
Then just setup a small linux partition which does virtually nothing from after the kernel boots. The kernel takes very little time to load, it's mostly the init scripts that take a while.
actually it is new. The vm86() call cannot, and never will allow you to run another 32bit os. It supports DOS great because DOS doesn't put the cpu in "protected mode". Intel CPUs only have hardware support for virtualizing 8086s, an 80386 cannot be virtualized in hardware on an intel chip. Too bad they never bothered to fix this.
I'd just like to say that I'm behind the entire/. group and that I don't think you should switcht the database unless you want to. Take your time, find out what the problem is, and fix it. If it takes 2 weeks, fine. If it takes 2 years, fine. I would like to start a fund to donate Jolt and Pizza to feed our nice/. hackers so they can get the job done and get it done right. Everyone knows that real computer nerds do their best work while loaded up on caffine. In short, if you feel like yelling because/. is broken, STFU. You didn't do anything to deserve this site and you certainly have no right to demand anything. I'd like to say thank you to/. and that I'm praying to Linus for you all.
Jeezus, calm down buddy. Rebooting is not a solution. There is still a problem, it might just be hidden away for a while longer, or it might not come back up at all. Give CT a break, he's working at it, I'm confident that he will fix it, just give him some time.
Isn't that roughly like saying linux 2.2.x is faster than 1.2.x or MacOS 8.5 is faster than System 7. Or that is faster than . I would hope it's faster, win3.1 is about 5 or 6 years old, isn't it? Since the issue is integrating ie4 wouldn't a more comperable test be win95 vs win95 w/ ie4?
You know it's people like you that make me hate people. Don't you have anything better to do than to complain which desktop someone else uses? Do you really think that we'd be better if KDE was the only desktop available to us? Aren't Linux/FreeBSD (and especially X) supposed to be about choice? Yah KDE may have gotten to 1.0 before GNOME did, but they also started long before GNOME did. I honestly could give a crap if you like KDE or GNOME or fvwm or twm or if you don't believe in window managers. Instead of harassing the community why don't you put all that energy into something usefull. You seem to like KDE so much, so why don't you start writing apps for it? Grow up, we take enough shit from micro$oft, etc. we don't need members of the community turning on each other.
Actually it is Apple's fault that the clones died out. When Jobs took over Apple again he killed the clone market by revoking the licenses of the clone makers.
And what's wrong with a closed system is that you have to rely on the hardware vendor to produce things like operating systems or device drivers. With an open system anyone can write anything they want. PCs killed apple because PCs were open.
Not really, StringToDate("89") could check the current year, if it's before the current year, ie in 2010, 2089 will be in the future, so you would assume 1989. If the date is in the past "01" you would assume 2001. Both of these ways are broken, but then again, using a 2digit date is broken.
Putting a screen saver as your wallpaper is hardly an original idea to GNOME. It's really just a feature of xscreensaver. IIRC you just run the screen saver name with the argument "-inroot" or something of that sort. FVWM-2 would do this for you automatically if you wished. I used to run fvwm2 w/ rock as my wallpaper, really trippy effect. Also, the gnome panel really is based on KDE's panel. I know i'll take some heat from the GNOME zealots for that comment, but KDE had a panel before GNOME existed.
Does anyone else get the impression that most of these trolls just post this shit to get us all worked up.

I really thought most of the Linux comunity was beyond that kind of hateful banter. If you don't know what I'm talking about there is no hope for you.
What if you buy the software direct from micro$oft? Who is the OEM then?

Kinda interesting.

Why do people always feel the need to be so violent? Take a deep breath, drink some water.

i've been having the same problem. Just keep hitting reload, sometimes it doesn't work.

Btw, I am a KDE user.
About time IBM notices our tiny little OS.
