Slashdot doesn't care if it burns somebody's little web server to the ground -- the editors know that any site they link to will be ground to a halt, but they do it anyway, without asking for permission or linking to a cached page of it. That's why it's abuse.

You seem to be under some misconceptions. Port 110 is used by POP3, a protocol for receiving mail. Port 25 is used for SMTP, which is what all programs use to send mail. There are some firewalls (such as those at college campuses) that only allow certain ports inbound; for example, at my old college, some of the few ports they allowed were 20 through 25. So the natural thing to do is to set up any filesharing program to listen to those ports; however, when you try connecting to anybody else on port 25, ZoneAlarm automatically thinks that you're trying to connect to an SMTP server to send mail, even if that's not what you're really doing.

I recall first using ZSNES on a Pentium 2, 300 MHz; not top-of-the-line, but a pretty good computer for the time. As far as I can recall, there weren't any SNES emulators that would run games at full speed, but ZSNES came pretty close; SNES 9x was more accurate, but also considerably slower unless most of the features were disabled.

Personally, I've also been playing FF games since FF1 came out in the US, and FF7 is my least favorite; I thought that FFX was the best FF game since 6, although I also enjoyed 9 (and 8, but not as much). I haven't played enough of X-2 to form an opinion on it, but I have friends who have been playing since the early days and they've enjoyed it.

The point is that it's all a matter of personal opinion. As you say, they're not catering to the exact same people with each new game they release -- otherwise they'd just be making the same game over and over again. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean that it's crap.

How does it fit the definition? Here's the first definition:

"a. The use of words to express something different from and often opposite to their literal meaning.
    b. An expression or utterance marked by a deliberate contrast between apparent and intended meaning."

That doesn't work. Microsoft definitely said what they meant to say. So, here's the second:

"a. Incongruity between what might be expected and what actually occurs: Hyde noted the irony of Ireland's copying the nation she most hated (Richard Kain).
    b. An occurrence, result, or circumstance notable for such incongruity. See Usage Note at ironic."

Microsoft has a tradition of insulting competitors for their lack of interoperability. No surprise there. They also have a tradition of not licensing out their own proprietary formats. So, that's also not a surprise. There's no incongruity here.
