Again, what about the part where we have to recognize this 'alien communication' as actual communication? Where is it written that all life in the universe (here uni- meaning 'one', so 'the' uni-verse sounds somewhat wrong, should be 'our' universe or 'a' universe)is carbonbased, i mean even captain james t kirk had to fend of siliconbased creatures in his days ... where does this so-called paradox take into account that we can only hope to understand things that are recognizable in 'our' universe and that something alien might be so ... alien that we don't even notice it...then again, the universe is known to pull some sick jokes so it might really be possible that we are the only sentient life in it ????? i think the problem lies at the core of most judicial systems : trying to solve problems by repression. Wouldn't you think that death penalty would have eradicated crime after the middle-ages ... if it actually worked ? You cannot solve social problems like poverty and stupidity by repressing and opressing people, and you will not make a criminal 'better' (weird concept in se) by locking him or her up for any amount of time. Beside ... sentenced for life is totally stupid ... i think (dont kill me hehe) it's more humane to kill someone right away than to lock them up with no chance of ever getting released. Not to mention the fact that you use valuable resources on individuals that will never contribute to society again... my 5 cents

i totally second that. furthermore, just pulling something out of someone's backpack, to me, seems to be (legally) much the same as home invasion though it will, ofcourse, not have the same traumatizing effect. Unless your notes are an exact copy of someone elses work i don't see how that teacher would be allowed to do that. And still then , he or she does NOT have the right to pull it out. Since we live in a society dominated by paper law, your teacher should follow this, both literally and morally. This is im(ns)ho at least infringement of privacy. Pardon me if my english is not perfect, i suppose your teacher would use this as an excuse to demean me and my opinion but let me cite one of my favorite slashdot-sigs : all my foes are spelling or grammar nazis.
