Actually it's equivalent to X with a big chunk of GNOME thrown in. IMHO, in some respects it's still way ahead of X and GNOME, in other respects it's maybe only a few years behind.

Open sourcing OS/2 is not very likely since Microsoft holds a number of the patents on the kernel and HPFS file system which I don't blame them for holding on to since some are likely included in the current release of Windows. However, I may be wrong, but I think only IBM holds the patents for the WPS. There was even a WPS for Windows developed unofficially by a group of IBMers although I don't know if it's sill active.

It would be great to see a WPS running on a Linux stack.

Sounds a lot like my last year of high school, if you add 3 advanced math classes, but I still found the time to take a computer course and work part time as a programmer for a small firm.

I've found people head down two paths when they start out in IT. The first group has a real curiosity about everything related to computers and usual end up being the techies that keep IT departments working. The second group are people who an interest and a bit of attitude but quickly get overwhelmed by the day to day demands of IT work. They usually end up getting out of the pure technical roles and move towards more management type roles within a few years.

Because of the extremely technical nature of the job it requires a true passion for the work to be successful. If by the time you get to university you don't have more than a basic (no pun intended) proficiency in programming then you're likely headed for a non-techie role.

And I didn't address who I think the primary care givers of these children are because that was not my point. My point was that the school, as you suggested, is not to blame for the behaviour of these kids.

I agree with your sentiment but it's not likely to change any time soon. Microsoft bashing was a recreational sport even before the web existed. A history of predatory business practices, abuse of monopoly power, vendor lock in, subversion of standards and generally evil behaviour tend to overshadow any good technology they do produce particularly in the eyes of the FLOSS community.

As a result the FLOSS community is mistrusting, I think rightfully so, of anything even remotely linked to Microsoft. Unfortunately after decades of mistrust it's more often to manifest as soapbox pontifications rather than reasoned statements.
