    actually, that's not true.
Here's what you do - find a running store in your area, go in and have them do a gait analysis. They'll recommend a style of shoes for you.

The price is unlikely to be much higher than you'd pay in any other store, but it's likely to START higher, so be prepared.

My wife went from some pretty serious knee pain/shin splints to a much more comfortable run, and they actually told me "keep the ones you've got and come see us when they wear out".

  3. Re:Home Gym.. on Gravity Lamp Grabs Green Prize · · Score: 2, Interesting

you're thinking pure energy output by direct action - I think the poster was suggesting using a similar process to the one described by the lamp. 2 sets of 10 reps of 50lbs (for certain exercises) can be used to create a fairly decent source of potential energy for lighting. I figure...a single rep lifts weights about 18" - if this lamp is 6' tall...and it takes 10 5lb weights to power it from that height...
that's 4 reps to get the weights that high if attached to a ratcheting system. properly constructed, I bet I could get most of the electricity for my daily lighting by doing a fairly vigorous workout every day. It'll never happen, but only because of the weird stuff you'd have to have installed. I can picture it now - a huge stack of weights, lifted to the top of my house, 10 to 200lbs at a time, in 18" increments, the sounds ratcheting sounds echoing across the neighborhood. over the course of the day, they slowly grind down to the basement or ground floor. Run out too early? do another set! You've been meaning to tone those arms for a while now anyway, right?

here's the thing, though - *why* would you do this?
I mean, I understand the "I need to break the copy protection scheme to use my media!" mentality we all have - because this *isn't* "copy protection". it's "copy indication". You can still do whatever you want with it.
hell, you can still even share it with your friends!
just don't put it on a p2p share.
rip the audio for an mp3? go for it.
recode it for your ipod? sure.
want to ditch your ipod and get some other media player? you're able to without having to jump through hoops.
    none of that is restricted.
this is exactly the kind of copyright "protection" we've been begging for - so why WOULD you immediately try to break it?
hell, even better is they only have to store a hash of my watermark on file to re-send me the video as often as I want it wherever I want it, and it's up to me not to abuse it. this is a *good thing*

    this is a poor example.
first, it would be like running an advertisement in the newspaper, and putting the sign out in front of the store, not hiding the sign behind the counter. this info isn't in the click-through license agreement, it's in the feature list they advertise to entice you to use the software.

second, it's not a punch in the face they're *offering*. it's far more along the lines of them following you around the store and commenting on everything you buy, recording the info on a little notepad, and sending it off to headquarters to store or sell once you leave - oh! wait! they already do that with little tags. my bad.

the major difference is that the store is their premesis. a computer and its associate software, whatever the license agreement says, is mine.

    that can, however, be argued.
