That was my first thought too, and I see a lot of posts agreeing with you and offering up additional companies, but every single one (that I saw, I did not check every post) has one thing in common.
They are all consumables.
I think there is a real difference between selling 1 billion items of food or 1 billion of a thing that has a guaranteed finite lifespan (think pens/pencils, eventually they run out of what makes them functional) vs selling 1 billion of something that I've still got working versions of that are 15+ years old, and can continue to function for the foreseeable future.
Record companies pay radio stations to play their songs so that people can hear it
I don't know where you live, but over here in the USA, radio stations pay the record companies for the privilege of playing their music, even if they don't play any of their music!
And radio in shops? Yeah, they don't like those either. You can play it just loud enough so that you can hear it, but if it reaches your customers ears you gotta pay. And this is over the air FM radio, which as I pointed out above, was already paid for once by the radio station.
I'd link to sources, but I don't have time right now. But anyone who is a regular/. reader will know what I'm talking about, both situations have been on the front page previously.
There's a difference between being asked to commit an illegal act, and being threatened to commit an illegal act. If a police officer walked up to you and asked you to rob a store, entrapment arguments aside you would have no recourse if you went ahead and did it. If the police officer threatened you at gun point and you were later taken to court over the robbery, you'd have a valid defense.
Near as I can tell, the telecoms fall under the former, and thus share as much blame as Bush and friends.
... they seek out information that validates their already-existing view of the world. Actual facts and truth might require a painful rewiring of preconceived notions.
The exact same thing can truthfully be said of those on the left of the political spectrum.
Perhaps it's because I don't understand who Ann Coulter is or what Fox news reports on, but where did OP state that the left was to not be included in the posted statement?
Except you did still share a line, it's just that the point at which it split off to individual users was either further up or further down. It's been a few years so I forget which exactly.
That doesn't really prove that I would have remembered it if it hadn't been dry and dull. To demonstrate that.. well, ideally I would put your post to song and dance, but instead I will simply reference Schoolhouse Rock.
Exactly. Hate the Commander in Chief if you want, but don't hate on the men and women who, for right or wrong, end up putting their lives on the line out there because of the Commander in Chief's actions.
if you own one copy regardless of whether it was second hand or not, you may do what you wish convert it, backup, etc.
While I agree with this in principle, downloading an actual e-book that the publisher created is not the same thing as creating a digital backup yourself, or even downloading a digital copy. As far as I am aware, if I purchase a mass-market paperback version of a book, the production costs associated with creating the hardback/mp3(book-on-tape)/e-book/etc versions were not included in that price.
(I know you weren't advocating downloading the actual e-book that the publisher puts out, since you mentioned downloading digital versions of books that the publishers don't offer in an e-book format, but I wanted to add that note anyway.)
I thought the anthropic principle was basically an argument for a divine creator, but OP seems to be trying to dismiss it. The old "it doesn't matter what the odds are, we couldn't posit the question if we weren't here" kind of thing. I'm probably butchering the argument badly.:(
But once born, no one, not even themselves, can legally decide to end their life.
Now I'm not advocating OP's idea. Like you said, people with DS can lead happy, fulfilling lives. But on the flip side, those without it can lead miserable, empty lives. What I mean is, whether you have DS or don't have DS, does not dictate the type of life you will live.
Which is why we need to make suicide legal.
No one ever asked to be born. If someone wants to die then they should have that right, no matter their age or physical/mental condition.
And yes, I know if someone is really insistent on dying, they will complete the deed no problem. That still does not excuse all the brain-washing going on by friends/family/church/society/etc to make people believe that suicide is some sort of ultimate Bad Thing.
their infrastructure is designed for web pages and email, not video.
their infrastructure is designed for binary data--1's and 0's. it doesn't matter whether those 1's and 0's are used to make text or multimedia.
These two ideas are not incompatible. GP is merely pointing out that their networks are not built to handle the volume of 1's and 0's required for mainstream use of streaming video.
You're right, there are no music CDs that won't play in a computer. Of course, when I say music CD I mean a CD that correctly conforms to the music CD standard. It's the non-compliant CDs where they try to alter the standard so it can only play in certain players that are the problem. But they aren't really music CDs.
And yes I understand you were making a joke about Windows autorun (unless you were pointing out what I just took the time to make plainly clear).
Now I'm not saying whatever their idea is isn't patentable. I just find it hard to believe that even after all these hundreds of years since the sandwich was created, there are still improvements to be made on the process of putting one together. And unless it can help them to churn out sandwiches faster than any other method currently out there, what would be the point?
But if McD's really wants to patent a method of sandwich-making that does in 50 steps what I can do in 5, I say go for it.
At first I thought that you must surely be joking. Developers trying to put a decent story in a porn game? Then I remembered a friend of mine complaining about one such game. "Dammit, where's the 'Get Naked' button?"
Nono, you have to make it worse. Eat three animals for every one animal they don't eat (the one you would normally eat, plus two extra to make it even worse that they aren't eating one).
So they disapprove of the Cooking Mama series. Would they rather I take up cooking animals for real, thereby causing even more animals to suffer (by their logic), or that I "get my fix" through gaming?
I believe GPs point was that no one is safe from having it happen to them, not that no one is safe from the consequences of doing the data theft. Obviously (sadly) if you're doing it on behalf of the government, you're ok.

He defines wrong.
It's his universe, he can define an Elf/Hobbit/Dwarf/etc however he damn well pleases.

You should ask them if you can install webcams facing all of their toilets.
The execs did as ordered by the politicians.

I thought we've only existed as our current species for ten thousand years?

I probably should have added a tag or something at the end there.
At any rate, why are they going after Cooking Mama and not something that actually teaches you real recipes?

Unconscious is still alive.
I realize you're making a joke, but just wanted to add a serious note to that.
If animals weren't meant to be eaten by us, then our teeth and digestive tract would not allow for it.
Ralph is right, it's a fucking sandwich.

Hmm, now where have I heard about this Trapster product before?
If only he'd followed it to the next logical conclusion, he'd have realized how such actions inevitably lead to the Streisand effect.
