Along the same reasoning, a good reason to switch to Linux is to avoid the malware that you get from browsing those questionable pr0n torrent sites.

    I'm not kidding.

It could be the NICs on the computers. Or it could be the drivers for the NICs. Or it could be any number of different possibilities.

This is not exactly front page material. I think people are being just a bit too eager to promote Linux as being a superior OS that this stuff gets pushed to the top. Of course, Linux is a superior OS, but still...

  5. Re:Not in this economy. on IT Job Without a Degree? · · Score: 0

I left university about a year ago, and I had difficulty finding a good job. Some people do dismiss applications if they don't see a degree listed.

But what it all really boils down to is experience. A degree will get you noticed. It puts you into the arena with the other contenders. But your experience and demonstrated knowledge will give you the real advantage when it comes down to final decisions. If you can "wow" them with your initial application and force them to look past the lack of degree, then you have a chance.

It turned out okay for me, as I have a pretty good job. They started me off at a lower position than I wanted, but they quickly moved me up within a few months, once they verified my ability and work-ethic. I suspect that many people have had similar experiences.

She lost a butt-load of money. Maybe she's coming forward to "share" her story so she can get some publicity. Maybe down the line she'll get a book deal, or be signed on as an "inspirational speaker" where people give her a few bucks to tell her story.

Brilliant strategy! She'll be a millionaire by 2010! All she has to do is send me $50 a week, and I'll make it happen.

This star (rather, a fictional planet orbiting it) is a central feature in a very good series of books by Alastair Reynolds. I suggest people take a look at the Revelation Space series (although the first book is a bit dry, his writing matures quite nicely through the series.)

Sorry, I'm re-reading the series now, and this just jumped out at me. Word association = yay.

I would have to agree here. You said you often get to the first interview, but after that they drop you from the applicant pool. The fact that they're willing to interview you at all shows that they are at least intrigued by what you have on your resume.

Either you're lying on your paper application by saying you have skills and experiences that you don't have, or you're just not selling yourself in the interview. Take the above advice and go through some dry run interviews at some kind of career development center. Some colleges offer such services to their alumni, so I'd look into that, if I were you.

  12. Re:No, it is not reasonable. on Testing IT Professionals On Job Interviews? · · Score: 1

Why is it unreasonable? Are we in the IT field really self-centered enough to think that just because we went to a certain school, or we have a certain certification, or worked at a certain job, make us qualified for a particular position just because *we* think we're qualified? Reading this thread, you'll see horror stories of unqualified individuals who said they were qualified on their application. But really, even excluding that information, doesn't an employer have a right to evaluate the applicant to see if they have the necessary skills to work in THEIR organization? Yes, MCSE and other certifications prove that there is a certain level of knowledge, but that doesn't mean that you know how to use it in their environment. One thing I've learned is that different companies have different ways of applying the same technology. They have different work-arounds, different bugs, etc. They test you not just because they may not trust what you put on your paper (nor should they, in any event), but because they want to see if you can apply those skills. My two cents. I actually went and created an account just so I could post this. :-P
