I started using OpenBSD as my desktop machine after getting sick of checking logs and updates for my RH box. I Still use my RH box (xhost), but it's behind a firewall now. The OpenBSD is on the outside and I've had no problems with it. The uptime is also impressive BTW. I've only rebooted it when I had to move it. Once you get to know OpenBSD you get addicted, it's easy to update and the package system is a blessing. I was happy though that I had my previous SunOS/Solaris ski11z to get me through the partitioning and network setup... But after that it's eaaaasy. Try it! Everytime there is an Africa/Internet related storry a lot of people start screaming "Give Africa food/celan water/medication before tech/Internet/bandwith" and many a good modpoints get wated on those coments. Have you been to Africa? Yes, the countries in that continent are generally poorer but remember that what you see in the news is not the entire picture. When I was living in Bulgaria (before the perestrojka) whenever there was some news report from the US on TV they were filming in some backalley with homless people lying arround drinking liquor from papercovered bottles... When there is a report from Africa in the West it's allways famine, war and catastrophes. Don't you realize that if those were the only things that happened in Africa the continent wouldn last even 5 years? On the streets of Stockholm I see as many beggars/homeless as I saw in Serekunda (the Gambia)!.. Yes, many parts of Africa need all those things but the situation is not the same everywere. Getting access to information on the Internet will also rise the awareness regarding many of those problems and probably even partially help solve them. Developement doesn't need to be made in a linear/serial fashion. So: Africa does need Internet/tech/modern infrastructures!.. -- $HOME is where the.*shrc is
I was in the Gambia participating in an cultural exchange project called Dunya Molu last November. The sittuation there is not as bad as you describe it to be in South Africa. Granted, the government is slow and some parts of it are quite corrupted, but it's deffinetely not worse than some of the eastern Europe countries which many investors are OK with. Gambia is a very small and quite poor country and people have to get by in some way. Then it's "normal" that the Police or Customs sometimes try to add some dinero to their wages...
Despite the generally lower standards there still are decent and relatively cheap Cybercafees with PII:s, color printers, scanners and so on.
In the project I participated I was responsible for the webpage and some other computer oriented stuff. I just want to remind you that this is also a way in which you can help. It doesn't need to be infrastructure or humongously big projects. You can add your little share here and there.
Finaly don't judge the entire African continent from what you've seen in one country! It's like havin been to Albania and judging Monaco based on those experiences. Africa is bigger than Europe!..
Cheers...

Russian law considers it a violation of consumer rights to prohibit fair use of copyrighted works. America has no such provision. As has been pointed out, Adobe's licensing is actually what breaks the law in Russia because it violates the rights of the consumer to make a second personal copy.
So... What will happen next time an Adobe employee goes to Russia. Will they throw him/her into jail just like the US threw a russian visiting the US into jail because he broke the US law. What will the have to US say? What will the/. crowd say? I see potential drama here. Hope some russkies are reading this..:)
How many final fantasy players do you think exist in the world?
If you consider how many copies of FF games have been sold (6+ million just FF7) and that each copy is played by more than just the buyer then: many millions have played the FF games.
Only a complete moron makes a blockbuster movie for.0001% of the population
That's about 600000 people worldwide. Id guess like.01% and that's ok. Considering a large part of the people in the world don't have the money to go to movies... And I still think it is largely aimed at the FF players who hopefully will drag their friends to the thetre too. That should make a lot of viewers.
What I do find interesting is that you imply that Jon (or anyone else) has no right to review the movie because they didn't play the game? That's crazy.
Well, I was a bit pissed..:).. He has the right to review but he should try to view it from several angles but his own. He is reviewing for the community of which I think many have played FF7 or are interesten in CG. What I'm trying to say is he should be a bit more openminded.
If any slasdot readers can be passionate about something and unbiased at the same time

Katz, Im not usualy a JonKatz basher but at times like this I really understand them.
One of the first things you mention is that you haven't played the games. If you had you'd have had something to relate to. In the last games (since Vii) they have had lots of _nice_ pre-rendered CG wich has gotten better for each game. Every FF player has probably played with the thought of how this could be made into a movie. And now it is. Most of us compare to the game and the games pre-rendered sequences. And most of us love it. At least what we've seen on the www and on trailers. Many of us will go just for the eye candy. If I wanted real actors, I'd demand real actors. I want to see how much we can do without real actors... And I can't help you with the lipsync. I betcha there will be better syncs on other languages. Or just wait and buy the DVD with english subtitles. Let the fans deside if it's bad - the film is made for them.

There are many usenet groups that still function as they once did (mid 90's). Some even have more traffic and less SPAM than when the real SPAM WARS were on. It's mostly pr0n groups and unfortunate groups with pr0n alike names (like alt.lesbians) that attract SPAMers. For me the Usenet is as usefull as whe I first started using it.
The nasty thing IMHO is all the email collecting bots that wander trough ALL groups pr0n or no pr0n. A newbie has no chance to know about this and fake an email or SPAM-prove it. Many an email accounts are rendered useless by this.
The thing with google is that is so good at doing it's work so you are there a very short time. You look up something, get a good hit and you're gone. With yahoo (I do use it sometimes) you wade through page after page to get to what you are looking for. MSN and microsoft get a huge amount of traffic because of default page install and immense ammounts of redirects. Just look at you that status bar go!.. Well, using Mozilla makes me sleep good at night - I'm not helping Billy G. expand his empire... So who cares it's slower? It's stable and fast _enough_ eventhough I start it on my Linux box (333Mhz) and show it on the X-display of my OpenBSD runing a 180Mhz PPro!..:)...
There may be no future at all for the "??? is dying" troll because the "??? is dying" troll is dying. Things are looking very bad for "??? is dying" troll. As many of us are already aware, the "??? is dying" troll continues to lose market share; red ink flows like a river of blood.
Let's keep to the facts and look at the numbers.
Troll leader Anonymous Coward states that there are 7000 users of "BSD is dying troll". How many users of "Red Hat is dying" are there? Let's see. The number of "BSD is dying" versus "Red Hat is dying" posts on Usenet is roughly in ratio of 5 to 1. Therefore there are about 7000/5 = 1400 "Red Hat is dying" trolls. "Mandrake is dying" troll on Usenet are about half of the volume of "Red Hat is dying" trolls. Therefore there are about 700 users of "Mandrake is dying" troll. A recent article put "Debian is dying" troll at about 80 percent of the Linux market. Therefore there are (7000+1400+700)*4 = 36400 "Debian is dying" trolls. This is consistent with the number of "Debian is dying" Usenet posts.
Due to the troubles of www.hotgrits.org, abysmal sales and so on, "Debian is dying" troll went out of business and was taken over by "Mandrake is dying" troll who sell another troubled troll.
Major marketing surveys show that "??? is dying" troll has steadily declined in market share. "??? is dying" troll is very sick and its long term survival prospects are very dim. If Linux is to survive at all it will be among troll hobbyists and dilettantes. "??? is dying" troll continue to falter. Nothing short of a miracle could save it at this point in time. For all intents and purposes, "??? is dying" troll is dead.
Get it through you thick head you boring troll!.. It's not funny nor is it fooling anyone.
Not to be mean, but Linux Weekly news also had FreeBSD among the distributions in the distributions page for a long time. It's not there anymore, but long time readers may remember... I always wondered why...
If you compare 1Ghz with 2x0.5Ghz you are right. But suppose that the fastest processor right now is 1Ghz and you need - don't you think a 4x1Ghz would be a good thing (if you had the cash). Why else would sun have computers like this (minimum 4, max 64 CPUs)?
