It's all about the apps. Apart that Gnome looks better imho I don't need any KDE apps. I just had to compare Linux Mailclients for an article and the only KDE app in competition was Kmail wich simply falls short compared to Evolution, Balsa or even Sylpheed. No need to use it except you like KDE integration. This counts for many KDE apps (maybe not k3b).
What's this Gnome slowness you people are talking about? Sorry, but I am not running any cutting edge stuff such as a preemptive kernel or such. I use a stock 2.4 Slackware Kernel (not even recompiled as he time of writing), the terrible NVIDIA Drivers and Dropline-Gnome on Slack9.1.
My machine is a plain Athlon 1200 without overlocking and a measly 256MB SDRAM. To tell you the truth: My machine is responsive as hell.
I am forced to use Win2k at work with a 2Ghz P4 and much more Ram and my box at home outperforms it by far. Gnome2 might not be perfect, X might be bloated, but I can't see where Gnome is slow. Sorry. Maybe I'm ignorant.
Ok, I remember why I once used Windows. Games. Fre, cracked games I got from "friends" in my school break. That's why I switched from my Amiga, that's why I started MS. Personally I guess the most important thing is still that Windows comes free, Office comes free from a friend and Halo does alike. If this ever changes (ie: if MS really cares about a copyprotection) people might start using real free software.
http://www.minion.de They claim to have a working solution. But I wasn't man enough to get it working yet. Maybe I'll give it another shot now that I upgraded to Slack 9.1 wich claims to be 2.6 "ready".
After making first contact with a C-64, then owning my own C-16, then an Amiga 500, and later switching to a 1040st Atari (since I was into e-music back then, Ok, I also had an Apple LC for a year or so, wich introduced me to SimCity;-) I finally got a 486.
I must say that it was a neat little box and what was best about it, it was the first machine to connect me to the Information Superhighway. I got a free Journalists acccount from Compuserve (my stepfathers actually got and gave it to me) and I was on a "flatrate" back in 1993. That was fun.
From this day on I started to learn what is now my field of expertise. Fiddling around with this machine really made me learn my job as a Sysadmin. You should really check out Linux, btw, since it brings back the fun in computing big time. Using XP is no fun and feels "cold". Use Linux and your machine will trouly be "yours" again.
Afaik the videos can be viewed with some form of linuxplayer, but frankly, I dont care. It really isnt necessary to see them, the game works fine without them. If this is holding you back you are really missing a lot of fun. This game is quite addictive and you should give it a try.
If you don't read/. for more than 24hours your computer KNOWS you're dead. It could then just start sending mails. I bet my linuxbox uptimes beat the lifetime of another startup.
Agreed. If you look at a virus that writes zeroes all over your harddisk all it does is to increase entropy in the universe. Wich restores order. Bad luck if the files in question were your pr0n collection.
What I never really understood is why there is no such thing as an enduser gcc-frontend.
It might just be a small app where you drag&drop your tar.gz. The app then asks "Do you want me to install this package?" The beast could then run the "./configure && make && make install" stuff.
In case of trouble it would just fire up the console, so nothings lost, but a lot is won. I know it wouldn't work with any file but with quite a lot of the latest source-packages it would work fine and help desktop users to install software without even seeing the console that scares them oh so much.
Maybe I should start this project although I'm a lousy programmer. What do you think?
Alright, in the screenshots I can see translucent stuff and dropshadows. But: Eyecandy it is not.
The wallpaper is ugly, they dont even use Gnomecompliant Software such as Epiphany. I know this might be offtopic but I was expecting to see something nice and this is plain ugly. I prefer a clean (Gnome-)Desktop over this clutter when it comes to execandy.
But from a tech point of view I must admit this is heading in the right direction. All the hacks I saw so far with hardcoded dropshadows and pseudotransparency were a performance hog and didnt look good either.
Errr, this reminds of the last time I heard about someone who wasnt interested in landing a plane at all. Not sure about you, but that story leaves a disturbing taste...
so whats your point? There were some drawbacks and things didnt turn out to be as easy as expected so we better screw the whole thing?
Come on. If everyone would give up that easily we wouldnt have come far. Dont get me wrong, I agree that there are physical limits to some degree but on the other hand I dont think we are that energy efficient inside our mobile devices.
Whats more you can still shift to a totally new energy source such as fuel cells. Personally I believe that within the last few years we made some serious progress with oldfashioned batteries. Latest mobile phones run as long as those with simple 2color displays and no backlight. Just compare a 1990s mobile with todays Nokias in pure size and standbytime. And you tell me theres no progress? I disagree.
Doesn't this make sense to you? They are just oh so worried about their precious IP that is spread from those Linux hijackers all over the world via FTP. No, really. They CARE about their source, they even implemented PAM...sort of...i guess. These folks are so beyond sanity that it is getting really funny. Maybe this is just here for our amusement. If not, and it turns out that Microsoft is pulling the strings behind all that we should feel very honoured. They must be truly scared.
Make em bleed! Buy an XBox. That way you can still run Linux and switch to a platform with more IP (whatever they mean by that, since Linux is copyrighted anyways!) That way you can screw SCO and Microsoft altogether. Maybe this is all about getting rid of Sony, or am I taking this too far?;-)
Errr...well. Im not a Schroder fan either. But I wouldnt go as far as calling him a commi. Still, a lot of things didnt work out right recently in our both countries. And having Bush on one side and Schroder on the other had to lead to trouble.
When it comes to the state of the country (germany) I am sure that the reunion came at some expense. Still I think that from a liberal point of view Germany is one of the better places to live.
This might look different in the light of economical politics. I, for one, live in the south (in Bavaria) and we are still performing quite nicely but I wouldnt want to live in Berlin or East-Germany where unemployment is all around (20% partly!) and where not much of a future is in sight. Lets see how all this turns out over time. Some say (and I am one of them) that cutting the welfare system might help to bring this country back on its feet but personally I think investing in education and cutting down on the stateofficials (not sure about this word in english!) would help even more.
One major problem where the USA is much ahead is flexibility. Even though Germany is such a small country nearly noone is willing to move for a new job, and even worse, most people are clueless and afraid of starting their own businesses. If we could fix these issues Germany might be competitive with the US pretty soon, again.
Yeah, sorry. Im 27 years old. I was raised with, what used to be, american values of freedom of speech and thought. We used to be allies during cold-war. Remember?
Sorry. As a german citizen I always saw the USA as an example of freedom. Whats going on in the last few years is seriously disturbing, though. I hope Europe doesnt jump on the train again. I wouldnt love to see this kind of Orwellian politics over here as well. If this really takes off please rebel against since this trend really cuts into privacy and freedom rights of everyone of us...

What about AmigaOS?
I thought that might fit.

NT = Ente in German, meaning Duck.
Well, why not if pigeons can run a search eninge?

I mean, if its working for a truck it could also work in a lawn mower. ;-)
;-)
Sorry for the cheesy comment but I read lawn mowers first and couldnt resist!
On second thought I might just stick with my 1984 Fiat X1/9 for a while. No GPS, no electronics whatsoever.

"I find your lack of screenshots disturbing." ;-)
Throw in Dropline-Gnome and you're set.
The best Desktop Linux I've ever seen. And I've seen way too many...
