  1. Prediction on Video Services May Use AI To Crack Down on Password Sharing (variety.com) · · Score: 4, Insightful

This is effectively DRM and will lead to an increase in piracy. These dumbasses never learn.

  2. My parents have it setup by default on their TV and it doesn't bother them so they leave it on. I, on the other hand, want to smash the TV to bits every time I'm there and we sit down to watch something.

  3. Wow, that's just a lot of hand-waving and "we must fight the global elites!" Ugh, no thanks. The pro side seems to be just salesmen.

  4. I'm avoiding cryptocurrency because I don't understand anything more than the basics but the guy in the baseball cap comes across like a spoiled brat, constantly name-dropping economists, brags about how many economics books he's read, and argues based on anecdotes and emotions instead of logic.

Take the top off and I won't even have to bother drying my hair after I get out of the shower. The constant windburn would probably result in some ointments, but it's probably worth it. Even if it only holds one gallon of gas, I'd only have to fill up every 2 months! Take _that_ big oil, I'm sold!

Had the intertubes and Facebook been around at the time I'd have been killing time on there. When it came down to it I was just unprepared for college so after getting kicked out at the end of my second year, I took a year off to work and learn how much minimum wage sucks, then went back for a second attempt with a better perspective and had no problem buckling down.

  14. Yelp bends over to restauranteurs already on Restauranteurs Say Yelp Uses Extortion To Ply Ad Sales · · Score: 5, Interesting

I lost confidence in Yelp after I posted a negative review of an Italian bistro in Haddonfield, NJ (which I won't name to avoid giving them any free publicity) and it was removed after about a week. Over time other reviewers for the restaurant made references to their previous negative reviews being removed as well. My girlfriend and I had dinner at this place for Valentine's day last year and the experience was miserable. The food was bland and overpriced, and the kitchen manager was making very rude sexual comments about his dating life and experience with women. I wrote to the owner first explaining the problem and he responded with suggestions that I'm a prude, obviously don't know good food, would not be happy anywhere, and suggested that if I'd like to come back sometime (I live in PA), he'd be willing to settle this outside. So since I wasn't getting anywhere with that route, I posted both my and his emails into a yelp review. Gone a week later. I've watched the review section since then and have noticed several negative reviews go up and are then removed shortly after. Currently there are only two reviews up, with 3 and 5 stars. My only idea at this point is that the owner of the place (whose email address looks suspiciously like the word "douche") badgered Yelp into removing them.

    Anyone else have this experience?

I once went out on a date with a girl who was in an English PhD program at Lehigh University so she was no dummy, but she believed in astrology. I didn't realize she was serious at first so I started picking on her about it. She got really offended and tried to rationalize it by explaining that when you're born the stars in the babies star sign have a gravitational effect on its' brain. I tried to explain to her that the TV in the delivery room would have more of an effect. Her eyes glazed over at the term "Gravitational Constant" so I figured it was a lost cause and just gave up.

  18. Images of Jesus on Muslim Groups Attempt to Censor Wikipedia · · Score: 2, Insightful

Well, technically, Christians aren't allowed to make images of Jesus/God either. The original text of the commandment in Exodus about graven images is:

You shall not make for yourself an idol, whether in the form of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.

Before I get jumped, "idol" means something to be worshiped. This means, in it's strictest sense, no paintings of Jesus/God to worship ANYWHERE. Why anyone would have paintings or sculptures of Jesus/God in a church without intending them to be worshiped is beyond me. And it seems hard to believe that no one has ever prayed in the Sistine Chapel after looking at the ceiling.

This commandment has obviously been rewritten over the years and I'm sure some Christian will reply and make a defense about how I've taken things out of context. I'll never understand some things, such as this commandment can be open to interpretation, while "women should never wear mens clothing" means that it's a sin for women to wear pants to some far out fundamentalists.

  21. My Thailand experience with the royals on Thailand Sues YouTube · · Score: 1

I was in Thailand a few years ago and when I heard about this whole "don't insult the king", being a lover of freedom of speech, I was nearly bursting at the seams trying to contain myself. It didn't help matters that my travel companions and I ended up at the Viennese Opera Ball (which is held on the Kings b-day in his honor) at the Oriental Hotel sitting 20 yards from the queen and princess of Thailand. All I wanted to do was insult the king. Not because I have anything against the guy, it just pisses me off that they try to silence insults. My travel companions exerted much energy keeping me quiet. One of them got really sick from the water and almost vomited on the princess passing her in a hallway of the hotel.

While there I heard a story of a guy those threw a 1000 Baht note on the ground and stomped on it, which resulted in several Thai bar patrons beating the ever loving shit out of him. I don't get it. I'd be pissed as hell living in a country where freedom of speech is curtailed like that.

Note: You'd think the princess of Thailand would be a hottie... no no, she is a VERY LARGE WOMAN (went to Cornell though, so she speaks decent English)

  24. Paperboy on Jack Thompson's Game Bill Moves Forward · · Score: 3, Funny
I think Jack Thompson is onto something with this whole "video games cause violence". After playing Paperboy for countless hours when I was 13, I was under the following assumptions about being a paperboy:
    • Non-subscribers are to be punished by destroying their property with extra newspapers
    • Subscription was not based on how good the paper was but how well I was at delivering the papers
    • The proper way to deal with people fighting is to throw newspapers at them
    • The newspaper has horrible logistics problems since each day I would be given literally hundreds of papers in the hopes that I'd get to all 10 subscribers
    • My fitness as a paperboy was not only judged on how well I delivered the paper, but on how much property I could damage.
    • I should never turn my bike around or stop before venturing into traffic

Much like in the game, I was fired after the third day. If only Jack Thompson had been around to save me, I wouldn't have royally been misinformed about my duties as a paperboy.

  25. First guy dumped for being a geek on Interview with One of ENIACs Inventors · · Score: 5, Funny

During the summer of 2004, my girlfriend at the time had a job taking care of an old guy at his beach house on Long Beach Island, NJ. The old guy grew up in Philly society back in the 30's and 40's and was part of the Doan family, owners of a prominent Chevrolet dealership. I was living at the house too and got to talking to the guy one day and told him I was involved with computers. Then he starts telling me all about how his wife (who had died recently) had dated a guy named Pres Eckert who had invented "some computer". I told him it was the ENIAC and pressed him for details. He told me his wife had dumped Pres because he was always taking her to see the machine and would make her sit around waiting for him to fix some problems before they went on dates. So, this could probably be the first instance of a guy being dumped for being a computer geek.
