It's not the first time music has been represemted as mathematical equations
You're right. Plato did it in the Timaeus about 2500 years ago. It's nice to see folks eschewing traditional Western culture and then 'discovering' things the same Western tradition developed over two millenia ago.
Websites fall into generally two categories: Information Delivery and Entertainment Delivery.
This is eerily like my kindergarten-age child's description of books as being either non-fiction or fiction. If it provides information, she says, it's non-fiction. (Makes you wonder how you would classify sites for things like Entertainment tonight and TMZ. Okay, not really.) But I'm with you. The web has folks trying to blur the lines and if information is not clearly presented, especially towards the stated purpose, then it's a nightmare.
I wonder how the Americans are planning on undermining this UN initiative ?
Typically it's the other way around. Al Baradei has been far more interested in showing he can stand up to the UN than in actually finding nuclear development like in say Libya or Syria. I'm not even going to mention Iran because since the US has backed off the EU realizes that they better stop whining to the US and start acting like they have a hide to preserve.
She is on the ground there living as a citizen and doesn't think that the taliban is going anywhere anytime soon. Her opinion of the government is that we have replaced the taliban with criminals.
She is also a NY Times reporter and is therefore a partisan hack. There is NO FUCKING WAY she would have driven the road when the Taliban were in power. Period.
The rationale for the invasion, as the GP pointed out, was the failure to comply with UN resolutions, including allowing inspectors unfettered access. Quite honestly, whether or not Saddam had WMD was a red herring. Didn't matter. What did matter was his not letting inspectors in as part of the cease fire agreement. That and the no-fly infractions, etc. The liberal mantra about WMD is like some slobbering idiot who entirely misses the point, specifically, it didn't matter one bit about whether or not there were WMD. What did matter was complying with the various UN resolutions.
And remember, Bush's info was as good as Clinton's when he signed the Iraq Liberation Act of 1998. Nobody got their tits in a twist then or when he sided with Kosovar Albanians who were being 'ethnically cleansed' despite their population INCREASING during the preceding decade. It would be like sending in troops to Texas to liberate Mexicans. Not only did it not make sense, but we now have a Muslim country on mainland Europe and a hotbed of violence. And nobody is asking when our troops are coming home from that little scuffle. Or Germany, Japan or Korea. They only question troop withdrawals if you have an 'R' after your name.
Apple will get viciously maligned...stick around. It's just they're never going to viciously maligned for giving something away for free, i.e. buying the business. What's the cheapest Apple ANYTHING you can think of? Now, can you find something 'comparable' that's cheaper? Of course you can. That's the point.
Apple gets shit for entirely different purposes. So does Linus.
(And the slashbots don't grow up...or at least, when they do, they don't post here anymore and new slashbots replace them.)
Don't forget the cost of the parts and the fuel to get there. Those costs will end up in corporate coffers which are largely untaxed. The amount that comes back into the government would be so watered down that so much else would suffer.
You do realize the government doesn't produce anything, don't you? They merely take money and spend money.
Ron Paul is a nut job, not a conservative. A lot of people made the same mistake about Ross Perot. He can hold a lot of conservative positions and still be an idiot. And he is.
What the fuck happen to the Republican Party and being conservative?
George W. Bush. I keep pointing out to my dad (a Democrat) that Bush is a liberal, though he styles W as an 'arch-conservative'. The guy expanded Medicare, expanded education spending and got us into two foreign conflicts. Sounds like a liberal to me. McCain and Romney are no bargain either. Right now, Hillary is the most conservative politician in the race and she's likely not even going to be on the ballot. I think I just threw up in my mouth.
I see your name is apt. Do you even understand what you just wrote and how it conforms to what has actually happened in Windows releases? Widely-used software is usually paradigm shifting and has feature sets that people not only want but feel they need. Word 6 made a splash because you could open/edit/save in either Word or WordPerfect format - something the folks in Orem scoffed at. Excel had the ability to use either Lotus or Excel keystroke commands while the 1-2-3 folks were wondering whether mouse support was that important. I tell folks that if they get a Mac they don't have to buy DVD burning software, picture management software, music tools, backup software, etc. and they say, "Wow - that's hundreds of dollars of software I don't have to buy." Plus they hear how stable OS X is and that seals the deal. It's perceptions and paradigm shifts.
And like it or not, Vista was started from scratch and went the wrong way. Monolithic kernels ain't the answer hence MinWin.
Vista can be POSIX compliant via a translation layer. But that isn't the problem. The problem is that it's unstable, unusable bloatware. Cripes, I couldn't get Windows Update to run with Microsoft Tech Support. If Microsoft can't get their software to update, how can an average user?
Sorry, the problems are much deeper (and higher) than simply being POSIX compliant. (I'm fighting the urge to say "look at Gnome".)
A country would not want to attack another country with robots (or anything else) for fear of retribution from the target or its allies using similar methods.
Unless that country is made up of a significant number of religious folk who believe suicide attacks are condoned as part of their religious beliefs.
It's time you people start forming an intellectual elite that has some leverage over this critical mass.
You mean like China, Russia, Cuba or Venezuela? Some folks in the US prize economic and political self-determination over having things run by an 'enlightened' few. That's a principle of the Federal system, believe it or not. A little idealistic? Maybe. But that's how we roll.
I don't know what's more disappointing, the fact that this story actually got posted or that the parent was modded down for pointing out the same. I actually read the f**king article and came away feeling dumber for actually having done so. Funny enough, I did not see one point that you could not use Ruby or Python to make the EXACT SAME CASE. Data manipulation in place? Cripes, if I'm in an Excel file perhaps I could write VBA to do the same thing and a lot easier at that. This kind of thing is just inane. Perhaps it will get the occasional CIO who reads this rag to name drop a language they neither use nor understand, but it does little in terms of providing anything useful for the actual codewriters - you know the folks who used to frequent this site. Bah. Jet lag and cold coffee make me bitter.
Obligatory: "We're dicks! We're reckless, arrogant, stupid dicks. And the Film Actors Guild are pussies. And Kim Jong Il is an asshole. Pussies don't like dicks, because pussies get fucked by dicks. But dicks also fuck assholes: assholes that just want to shit on everything. Pussies may think they can deal with assholes their way. But the only thing that can fuck an asshole is a dick, with some balls. The problem with dicks is: they fuck too much or fuck when it isn't appropriate - and it takes a pussy to show them that. But sometimes, pussies can be so full of shit that they become assholes themselves... because pussies are an inch and half away from ass holes. I don't know much about this crazy, crazy world, but I do know this: If you don't let us fuck this asshole, we're going to have our dicks and pussies all covered in shit!" - Gary Johnston, Team America: World Police

Used to be the rule that you had to power on your laptop going through security screening. This was before 2001, in fact right before.

'OSS games'? Indeed.
I think their server is getting one hell of a simulation right now.

Never has.
Never will.
