I am glad someone else noticed this too. In an interview (or was it a irc chat) with Hemos and CmdrTaco one of the them made a comment about if a site is on the net, it is fair game for a slashdotting...
I didn't notice the "as long as it isn't an OSDN site" legal print at the bottom i guess
You should note that comment came from Darren Reed (of IPFilter fame), who is not a fan of Theo. After the arguements over the IPFilter licensing, a comment like this coming from him doesn't suprise me at all.
I commented before about not trusting Vixie very much due to some of the things he has done in recent years, and he proves me right.
Makes MAPS a pay service after orbs (their biggest competitor at the time) closes up shop.
Creates the "members-only" only bind list which deals with bind related security problems. (http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=01/ 02/03/16562 43&mode=nested&tid=95)
I don't know if maybe he is pissed off since he isn't thought of as a god or what, but turning internet community related items into pay services isn't a way to become the net got.
I don't think cell will kill wifi, as the technologies are designed for two different purposes.
Also, I can't get a cell fone (unless prepaid) in my name due to some hospital bills, but it doesn't require a credit check to go looking for hotspots with netstumbler..
I would look at Neuromancer, Count Zero and Mona Lisa Overdrive, Gibson's first Trilogy. Or if you want some different samples of his work, check out Burning Chrome, which is where the movie Johnny Mnemonic came from.
I really like the scenery Gibson paints in Neuromancer and Count Zero, but I have read most of his works (not All Tomorrows Parties or Difference Engine, or the newest one he was working on) and I enjoyed all of them.
That sounds great, but you have to also remember that some ppl have vendettas against others. We have a 2 strikes policy, but we will not take a complaint from any free-mail providers (hotmail, yahoo. etc...) seriously. It is too easy for one kid to get pissed at another on irc/irl/where ever and create different email account and complain 3 times. I also will require full headers when in doubt due to all the new virii that spoof the from address.
We had a customer who was a spammer, and he admitted it, but he outsourced his bulk-mailling to a company in Nevada. I told him repeatedly that I didn't like the business he was in (spamming to sell email addy lists) and that all I needed was 2 complaints and he was gone. He assured me that the company in Nevada would be the only ones to get complaints, not us. Well, one day it seems that the company in Nevada was having problem and we started to get complaints. I smiled as I told the customer that he would need find a new provider, his account with us was terminated. We then called the admins for the other local ISPs and warned them about a possible new customer.
well, since i am not fighting the race war, I have bit more time on my hands.
you have heard the phrase "stop and smell the roses"? Thats what I was doing when I was re-reading that book. Actually that was a few years ago, when free time was easier to secure, but I still think there are certain things you need to do to keep sane.
I put a smile on my face by re-reading...that is significant to me.
Reading Gibson is something that drew me into computers when I was younger. I find myself picking up Neuromancer or CZ (sometimes MLO) to just read a certain scene he has painted in my head. I once found myself reading Neuromancer page by page backwards just reading his descriptions of the scenery of our future.
After the article about the FCC letting the telcos merge back, maybe Gibson predicted the future more accurately than most think.
Some one needs to phrase the job of the US Patent office really vaguly and then get a patent on it. Then sue the patent office for patent infringement.
hmmm, wonder if i could make this into a business plan and get some VC behind me...
i called up to Netheads about 8:30 after my previos engagement to see if anything was still going on. I spoke to Dana, and she told me of both ppl who showed up, but didn't speak to each other.
Anyways, Next time I am going to try to get things more organized with the NetHeads staff and maybe have a sign or something.
Its ironic that Darren Reed finds himself having to decipher legalese after he put OpenBSD through the mill over the legalese of his ambiguous (at the time) license.
I would really want to check out Paul Vixie's intentions on this. I remember MAPS and how it went to a pay system after Orbs went bye-bye. I also remember Vixie being one of people who started the members-only bind group (http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=01/02/03/16562 43&mode=nested&tid=95).
He has a history of taking a community thing and then kicking the community out of it.
Suddenly I have a scene from the movie Hackers going through my head. Cereal Killer's monolog (inside Cyberdelia) about Orwell, 1984, and our names going through thousands of computers each day starts ringing in even more true...
Is this the beginning of the Science-bomb ( as in dot-bomb ). This sounds kinda like some of the claims that were made by companies looking for Venture Capital a year or so ago. "Lets push out this claim of finding a new element so we can get more grant money".
Maybe Transmeta needs to start doing research like this, its not like they can piss off their share-holders any more.

i just wonder if it is in response to the idea that IBM/whomever will buy them to kill this lawsuit.
Course stock price doesn't mean much about the quality of the company.
When I clicked to read more of this story I got an Intel ad at the bottom of the story. Gee, what great timing...

This and the Doubleclick exec being the Privacy Czar had me looking at the calendar to make sure it wasn't April 1st again....
wow, it didn't feel like a year passed....

You're not like other people, here in the trailer park.
Nice to see someone with a great musical taste...
Time to break out TDM cds
I also liked Rudy Rucker's Software and Wetware. It was a bit hard to get started reading Software, but once started I really enjoyed it.
I see he has also written quite a bit more

So will SBC be the next Tessier-Ashpool?

It is even better when you're using wcom services to watch it collapse.

But its easier to read while on the toilet.
Now i have a reason to write my congress person. "Please repeal the DMCA, I am really tired of Alan Cox whining about it."
No, i don't support the DMCA, but I also don't care for Alan's way of making his point.

Gee, what an easy way to get Jon Katz involved. I wonder if we will now get a 3 part essay about your comment.
