I And on a deeper, non-personal level, they are destroying the internet. I'm not one to really cozy up to tradition, and I'm aware that all is transient and change in inevitable, but I'm kind of a fan of this Internet thing. It's one of the very few things that I feel really strongly about, and I'll defend it the best that I can.

Their device was ludicrously over hyped for an odd scooter. Yeah, the inventor hated that comparison, but what's the fundamental difference between the two? The wheels are side by side, instead of in line, and so it needs a fancy gyro to balance itself.

Microwave ovens are better (in a way) then conventional ovens because they can very quickly heat things, and they're cheaper.
Velco is better (in a way) then zippers because it's even easier to use, and it's cheaper.
They haven't completely replaced the previous invention because they both have their drawbacks.

The segway, on the other hand, is really bloody expensive. Without some sort of added value, it didn't take off. But I'm not sure it has ANY benefit over a scooter. The gyro is impressive, but novelty isn't value.

  11. Re:Feelings on Researcher Builds Machines That Daydream · · Score: 1
hmmm, you seem to be playing with the definition of the word "emotion". I kind of see what you're getting at, but then you say rationality doesn't exist. I know the repercussions of binging on drugs, so I don't do drugs. You're saying it's fear or whatnot of those repercussions which drives me. But I can simply not want to deal with those repercussions without any emotion attached, just using simple rational thought.

If you consider "want", "prefer", and "need" to be emotions, then I guess I see where you're coming from, but it' a bit of a stretch.

I want to live, propagate the species, keep society going. You can call that a bunch of emotions: I enjoy life, feel accomplishment at creating life, and love my fellow man. But why do I feel those things? Instincts I guess.

Likewise, I want to live, propagate the species, and keep society going in a very rational sense. I can achieve more if I live, I will die one day and need someone else to do the job, and society benefits me. And why is that important? Again, instincts.

Emotions are attached actions and rationality is picking the best overall outcome. Without any emotion, there's no reason to live. Without rationality, we'd be animals. Stupid animals at that.

Consider the possibility that that's bullshit.

HA! Consider the possibility that it's not. That some people don't feel certain emotions, like happiness, fear, or distrust. Sociopaths don't dig this whole right/wrong thing but they can still function in society due to that whole laws and punishment system. Sure, it's not like they don't feel any emotion, but just because these people don't fit nicely into your worldview isn't a reason to ignore them or question their existence.

  15. Why the two-party system in entrenched. on Some Countries Want To Ban 'Information Weapons' · · Score: 2, Interesting

There's a question of how one would form. In the past, the alternative took it's base from one of the other parties. All this did was to let the party that wasn't split in half. And there's really no where else to get voters from. There is the non-political block, which is sizable, but they're DEFINED by not voting. And the third-parties are all super-small.

So as it stands, the only way to get another party is to break off from one of the two and then devour it's base. Kinda like how the religious right took over and perhaps what the TEA-baggers are going to do. But this doesn't so much make a third party as transform one of the two. And sad as it is, if one party is for it, the other is against it by default.
