    I would take this as a pretty serious suggestion. This is basically what Bittorrent was made for. Transmitting large files over slow connections with a high level of reliability and a low level of re-transmition should things go wrong.

    Opera do not even have a message saying they Pass at 100. Actually Opera seem to feel its something their browser shuld be doing anyway - not a "goal"

    Although I agree its nasty marketing - Turbo is a real benefit to people on slow net connections, such as a mobile. It basically proxies through Opera's servers and compresses everything before sending it to the phone. So as much as a clog is something too big increading pressure on a limited throughput - Turbo does unclog your connection

    Seems to be working in Opera 10 (alpha) as well. So is it news when Firefox does it - even if its last?*

    What I think is news is there seem to more browsers that support the tag that websites that use it. Must be a first for a new feature of HTML.

    Almost all of Cern is using CentOS and Scientific Linux (a derivative of CentOS).

    Yes it is true that they are using *nix on their grid but they are also using *nix on the desktops as the best way to interface with the grid.

    The problem is not intel selling high quality goods for a low price. The problem is intel using their size and market dominance to threaten retailers into not using competitors products. Intel have been ensuring by force that AMD are not even getting a chance to hit "shelves" with their products. That really is a bad things for everyone.

    It's almost what Vista wanted to be...minus WinFS...though they have tried to bodge similar functionality into explorer...

    I actually quite like it...as far as I can like windows.

    Its the best version of windows so far - even including server 2000

    I'm not really selling it am I :(

    Not only that but Opera provide a repository for Ubuntu anyway. So not having Opera available is just poor config.

    Right, so all those times Sun took BSD code and closed it screwing over the users, doesn't count? Or SGI? Or BSDI. Or MicroSoft.

    Sorry who has been screwed over here. I don't remember Sun stopping me using the code as well. Just not their changes to the code. I have lost nothing - you have lost nothing - the original author has lost nothing. We have all gained with Sun, Microsoft etc having better code.

    all of the work that went into BSD was stolen by Apple and Macs don't allow proper code sharing.

    But what has *BSD lost because of this? At the end of the day there was no theft involved. Its like the whole file-sharing and "stealing movies" argument. The original "owner" has not lost a thing. On the plus side the world has a much improved OS that has a chance of breaking a monopoly.

    Yes because at 100mph I want to be looking down at the dashboard to see where the volume up button is. Using a standard tactile dash I can feel it and I can feel if I've missed it. I don't have to take my eyes off the road.

    A lack of tactile interaction is not just "a little odd" when it comes to some functions. Such as on a cars dashboard; braile etc.

    For your first point. No-one could do that anyway if there are enough people fighting for "the good cause". Yeah yeah I know - idealistic.

    But your competitive advantage should ALWAYS include the support you give to that software. If no-one can better the support then there is little to no reason why anyone should branch. By saying that someone will "steal" your code if you don't GPL it means that you are worried that with your code people can offer things that you cannot. As the author of that code you are the one in the best position to know how the code works and the best way to work with it. If someone wants to expend money going through your code to add a new feature - then add it quicker than they can. Sell support for the software and people will come to you because you have all the new features and good support. Your competitors will end up null in comparison.

    Of course this assumes we are talking about whole programs here. If a competitor steals say - a networking stack - for an OS. Then you should feel proud as a developer that your code is better than something they could produce and that their OS has benefited from you (hopefully) good work.

    So I my log servers rack fell over yesterday and the HDDs are fecked. So sue me.

    Honestly there is almost no way anybody can guarantee any digital data is available tomorrow - one of a million things could happen. Especially if your backup policy is not as good as you hoped it was.

    There was a card released over a year ago, the killer NIC, that did all this and more. It basically ran traffic shaping to save people some 5ms on their gaming ping times.

    Nup...

    Any decent torrent client will seperate the tracker data from the torrent data. Ergo - send all tracker data through the proxy and have the torrent come in as normal.

    Now all anyone sees is a few small requests to random ips and a lot of big requests to other random ips.

    Its no different than being a tor server. Or any other proxy server for that matter.

    I provide a service to others...since when was it illegal to provide a service...even if the service is used for illegal purposes that is NOT my fault. Find the guilty partner and prosecute them. Isn't that what my tax money goes into?

    You jest but AFAIK that is exactly what conficker does. On "install" it patches the vulnerability that it used as an entry door. A bit like a obber locking your front door behind them. At the very least is mean no other robber can come through the door and bother it.

    Because nothing good has ever come from people trying to push technology to its limits, learning new things as they go and passing that technology on to cheaper applications. Thus making money and then using that to make a better product pushing it down to a lower price and repeating.
