  1. Damn low latitudes on Solar Activity, Northern Lights · · Score: 1

This is the one time that I get annoyed by living closish to the equator (27 degrees south).
Anyone want to claim the "closest to the equator aurora" award ?

  2. Re:Should do this in Australia, too on Jedi == Religion In NZ · · Score: 1

IIRC there should be a census in AU sometime this year.

  3. Re:you wouldn't believe on Peer-To-Victim File Sharing · · Score: 1

On Telstra Bigpond Cable in AU, they've blocked the netbios ports at their routers. No using _MY_ harddrive !

  4. Happened in .au already. on Whistler "Anti-Piracy" Tools Tie OS To Machine · · Score: 1

Here in Australia, this happens already with Office 2K (or at least the one bought off the shelf :) ). If you don't have a net connection, then you get to ring up the nice Microsoft rep. Office invents this huge string and the rep gives you the response to it. Luckily the MSDN version of Office isn't crippled in this way. Perhaps the same will hold true for Whistler ?

  5. Re:Use channel.nytimes.com on Iridium Repurposed For Science · · Score: 1

For once I hoped we could have a NYTimes acticle without someone mentioning this, but not this time.

  6. No partners or channel required on Will .coop Be Regulated Better Than .com Et Al? · · Score: 2

Why not just put www.nytimes.com into your hosts file with an ip of 208.48.26.223 (the ip for channel.nytimes.com). That way all links would take you there even when the article doesn't link there directly. Of course it won't work very well with a proxy but I digress.

Can anyone tell me why the fastest link to the US comes out of Perth ?
Surely the east coast is closer.

Perhaps they should crash one of the mars orbiters into the pool and detect if there is water they by seeing a splash !

  10. Another virus to cure the problem ? on Intel FDIV bug vs ILUVYOU · · Score: 1

I was thinking, how hard would it be to make up another email whose payload is to change the security levels in Outlook to stop these kind of viruses.
Before it does this, it would propagate the message to all of your contact list.
There by you could immunise a great deal of the world and they wouldn't even realise.
Of course they are now a lot less likely to actually double-click on the icon.

Am I the only that used to hack all of the software that loaded at boot time to remove these annoying messages ?

  12. Don't do this to yourself on Star Blazers Available Online · · Score: 1

As a kid I LOOOOOOOOOOOVED Star Blazers and you can imagine my excitement when I saw the whole series in the local video store. I of course got it out and watched it.
Unfortunately, my 25 year old brain interpreted it somewhat differently than my ~10 year old brain and I tainted my happy memories of one of my favourite cartoons.
So think of the happy memories before you click.

Actually in AU to register a .com.au you need to register a business name. Since these are all supposed to be unique, there should be no problems (in theory).
But as for me, I've got a .cx domain so I hope no-one will bother me there.

  18. Linked to Lycos ? on Indexing the Entire Web? · · Score: 1
