Looking around the office it's easy to see the universe is expanding. Take my co-worker George, he gained 40 pounds last year.
Of course there is occasional shrinkage, but the universe always bounces back....over time, I forsee a large stationary universe, where the georges of the world can expand till the hearts explode.
Skipping the hacking arguement currently being discussed on/.
If I remember correctly, with Fair Use, I'm allowed to make backups....
So how is Charley Pride going to let me do my Supreme Court ok'ed right to have backups....are they going to cut the price in half or give me two copies for the price of one?
yeah, this seems more like a sales pitch to the record industry. I can't see how difficult its going to be to get around the yellow/orange specs. So Micro$oft can't read the cds, big deal...how's that going to stop us?
Ok, who wants to start betting on this? $2 says an mp3 copy of the cd will be out on imess 2 days after release...what do you think?
Of course there's a problem with having any filterware on any pc...until its legal to know what they are blocking you from, no one should be required to have it installed.
actually his email address is Ninthnet@mail.house.gov
I just sent him a note. I CC'd my representatives and I strongly encourage you to do the same. Tom Delay didn't make it easy for me to get the note to him that's for sure.

PS. Don't AC them....we don't need them angry.
Heck, I think this could work. Back during the US prohibition, many cops looked the other way. It was only when people started getting 'whacked' that law enforcement really started to crack down. Probably the same will happen here. Oh the governments will cry foul, but will secretly love the way out. They are being caught in the crossfire of those who voted them into office and those who financed them.
(please forgive my comparison of apples and oranges (consensual crime and quasi-crime))
ok...Aimster taken to court by RIAA. Aimster wins under DMCA. RIAA has to pay $10. Aimster has to pay $10 billion to RIAA for copywrite piracy. Who won?
But Texas is improving our Blue Laws. Remember back in the 80s when you couldn't visit any store on Sunday? We've improved. Now on Sundays' you can shop til you drop as long as it's not alcohol & before noon or a car (all car dealerships have to be closed on either Saturday or Sunday. They can't be open on both days!)
Ps. I don't drink much and I tend to forget about the blue laws. Albertson frequently thinks I'm from LA because I want to get smashed on Sunday before Noon.
Paraphrasing Steven Hawkings on the chance of intelligent alien life visiting earth:
Odds are that intelligent alien life is in a position to communicate with us is remote. On the galactic scale intelligent alien life probably developed millions of years before us or they just crawled up out of the primordial swamp. Don't expect ET to phone....
No harm in looking though...but keep it in perspective...
After seeing the uninterested replies...I feel I have to point out the only advantage to the arcade room. Bandwidth!
I can see arcades popping up in Internet apartments. Most of them in Houston have at last a t3 connection. Toss in the Malls and you can have some great late night parties.
"The majority of our schools are designed to produce people who:
Show up on time
Organize their day according to alarms and bells
Do what they are told
Respect authority
In other words, they are designed to produce factory workers. No joke."
It's that the same as prisons?
(actually there are quite a few books that deal with prisons in terms of kindergarden schoools)
and to get more offtopic, I'm dubious of the factory work bit because here in Houston we launch undercover investigations of prisoners getting jobs, like bus drivers...shezz...
Can't have a prisoner take away the job of an 'honest citizen'....

Admittedly I'm a '80s StarFlight fan and though I'd love to see creativity make a come back, making this vow is absurd.
Doom/Quake are creative. Just because there are a ton of knock offs doesn't mean quake/doom weren't creative in the beginning. The market will filter the best to the top. Take Giants....I doubt it'll have strong appeal since there are already so much competition...but in a couple of years someone will take a risk on the creative game and be another success.
If you really want to make some changes get the gamer not the designer to make a similar vow...such as not to buy knock off games...that'll speed the market up!
"I pledge allegiance, to the very existence, of the Great Corporations Of America, and to the stockholders for which they stand, no tolerance, under Gates, uncircumventable, with invoices and subpeonas for all. "
Wait a minute...I remember making that pledge in an RPG...
Can't remember...was it ShadowRun or Paranoia?
"The future: Music will be only permitted via direct brain transmission that is immediately wiped from memory after listening. This allows an artist to sell the same song over and over again to the same people since no one ever gets tired of it. Ice Ice Baby and Chumbawumba top the charts."
Gosh, I love your version of the future. Music as crack and RIAA as drug pushers! Didn't G.W. campaign against drugs? Lets break the cycle. Lets get Congress in a rehab (to wean them from the RIAA) and then we can put the smack down!
Here's what I don't get: why are the publishers trying to shut down libraries when they could sue them for copy write violations.
Seems to me that libraries need a document management system to know when an e-document has been checked out. After the due date make the document availible again and charge the person who checked it out the cost of the book. Problem solved.
When I look around at the shelves at my home, I don't see 3 ring binders labeled Steven King - The Stand. I don't take pride in a print out of my e-books....a directory list just doesn't do justice to shelves of books.
So What if Libraries are passing around e-books. It's free (or near about.) What the publishers seem to want is for me to pay for BAD books...'cause if I like it, I'm going to buy it.
"Politically," Schroeder says, "it's the toughest issue. Libraries have a wonderful image."
Hello? There's a reason why they have a good image! It gives the poor a place and a chance to read and learn!
"No one, she says, wants to go up against libraries."
"That," Schroeder says, "is why we are here."
Now that you're here, Please leave. Here's the door, get lost...
It was very much like CIV but (duh) in space. In the begining MOO had big problems will large fleets of ships and complex fighting. MOO2 fixed most of those problems and was a very fun game. Of course it was turn based multi-player (suck!) Otherwise it was a blast...
Basicly you colonize planets and try to dominate the galaxy. What I liked was the close fighting. If you wanted it to it would zoom in and you could direct the battle.
It had the standards for diplomacy. You could form trade or research treaties with other
races.
Every race had special abilities and you could even play a custom race.
It even had a bit of a story line similar to B5 with the first ones. One planet in the galaxy was orion and was rich expect it was guarded by an ancient but powerful ship. Another planet was in hyperspace and that's where the Orions banished their enemy. Occassionaly the enemy breaks out and sows maddess and destruction.
It's very addicting. At least it was for me, I played it for entire days!
I think the worst thing about censorware is the fact that most parents:
a) have no clue about the software
b) frequently have the child install the software because the kid is more computer literate
c) the pc is usually in the kids room
My brother-in-law connects to the Internet via AOL (sign) and uses their Parental Controls feature (argh) to protect his kid from the dangers of the Internet. What AOL's Parental Controls feature does though is tick him off because he can't get to the sites he wants, but his kid can!
Most children abuse the Internet because they can get away with it. They have no body watching them or the pc is in their room. Rather than deal with the child, interact with the child, we'll put a tattle tale in their computer. This just makes me sick.
Censorware is just another means for parents to not be parents. They don't have to be parents. The computer will do it for them. Jon Katz is right about the morals it's teaching. How can we expect kids to grow up defending privacy if we are not willing to give it to them?
oh well...I guess this is a trol or redundent...frag it. Censorware SUCKS!
The first time I heard the 'bull' you are referring to it was coming from a pigs mouth, Rush Limbaugh. It's been seven years, but it still amazes me people take an entertainers words as scientific fact.
I'm not saying I know the truth of the matter. I'm not a scientist in that field nor am I on a political committee dealing with the subject. I honestly don't have any facts. What I do know is this: world leaders are concerned enough to host global meetings about the greenhouse effect. That's enough for me...
My only concern is the lobbying by third world countries and corporations. I don't want what happened to Easter Island to happen to the rest of the Earth. I don't want greed and shortsightedness to get in the way of pure science.
PS. I live in Houston, #1 in US smog. My eyes are burning this morning.
I was actually interested in posting a similar article today, but I knew it wasn't much of a post...I'm x-mas geek shopping and a cell phone with pda features is at the top of my list. Unfortunately it looks I'm going to be out of luck for x-mas. I've ruled out the handspring phone as being too expensive and too bulky. Plus as mentioned before it's not going to be available across the country. I think CDMA is a better option in the US at least for now.
Here's what I'm interested in: the Kyocera Smartphone Series - QCP 6035 that is supposed to be available early next year. It's CDMA with palm 3.5 with 8 mb.
Here are some articles about it:
News article about it here and here (with some pics) and here.
Here's what they filed with the FCC here. The FCC has some nice pics of the guts of the pda phone. (Side note: I figured all you hardware geeks would like this)
Ok, here's what I want: a cell phone with PDA, pager features, 8 mb of ram for under 600 bucks and is small.
I'm not going to get that with the handspring phone. It's going to cost me 800 plus after taxes to get that and Kyocera says they are going to be selling theirs for under 800 and it's going to be smaller.
If you don't know about Kyocera, they bought Qualcomm CDMA phone business which included the out of date PDQ phone. Here's a link to their site
Ok...that's all I know....does anyone on/. know of a palm OS cell phone deal that is or is going to be better?
Ok I can understand giving restricted access to one TV network. The Olympics needs the money to help sponsor the poorer countries. Having said that, I don't see why the entire Internet is blocked. Shouldn't the TV Network at least be aloud to broadcast over the Internet?
I was disappointed that network stations' websites weren't doing that during the last Olympics. It would have been nice to click on the athlete and watch them.
