What incentive is there for our congressmen to vote the way we'd like if their term is up? If I was them, I'd be trying to make as much money as I can and not care about my voters. The fastest way I can think of is to court corporations.
Even if their term wasn't going to expire, races have become so expensive is it any wonder that they listen to lobbyist?
I think we are getting caught up in a symptom when we really need to fix the problem, voter apathy and soft money contributions.
It *sounds* reasonable, until you try to impliment it - and realise there is no way to wiretap a person, you have to wiretap any device he might *possibly* use.
Taken to extremes, it would justify tapping every phone line at a hotel because he stopped off for a meal there....
Though they might not be able to use the collected data from the drag net against someone else unless they too are in the warrant, you're private data is going to be linked forever to the person under the warrant. They can't seperate them otherwise it would look like they tampered with evidence.
What did you expect? We're living in a democracy. It doesn't mean things will be OK, or even acceptable. It means that the country is (ideally) ruled by the majority of the people.
So what we get is the dictatorship of the majority. Most people are stupid, so they deserve stupid laws. They even deserve a stupid president. Just too bad nobody recognizes the joke is on them.
Socrates said the same thing in the Apology. Despite Plato and Socrates dislike for democracies, there are some nice words in Plato's Republic book 8 about democracy.
Basically paraphrased, democracy is the worst form of government (rule by the ignorant), however it provides the most freedom
The reason I want to see some Reruns are there are only 3 seasons worth on VHS...for the remaining season my TIVO and my computer are going to get aquainted.:)
As a Tivo owner who switched from DirectTV to cable (ok, it's time warner,) I have yet to learn any station's number beyond the SciFi channel (60). I tell my TIVO to fetch and I don't care what station it comes from.
I use my TIVO mostly to catch all the shows I would have missed, such as the early AM broadcasts of DS9 or Doctor WHO. I don't primary use my TIVO to skip commercials. I do skip them, but before I had the TIVO, I watched less shows and used the mute button heavy during commercials. Why anyone listens through every commercial is beyond me...
So the report is right, but I think the media needs to get a ripe on the fact that we are watching more TV with our PVRs and start marketing that way!
So there it is....Come on corporate America just try and remove my mute button!!!
I saw the picture early on Friday. It was a packed theater and I had to fight to leave once the picture was over. Like everyone else on/. I had problems with the ending, but here's a conversation I had with my wife in the theater during the movie.
Mark Marc is explaining how to hang on to a horse. My wife leans over to me and whispers "Where'd the horses come from?" I thought about it for a second and realized she was right. I leaned over to here and said, "God (Tim Burton) put them there. Do no try to understand the will of God."
Ok, from what limited knowledge I have, doesn't ads cost more where they are located in the comerical break? Like the first in the break cost the ad company more than the middle one because you've gone to the bathroom durring the middle of the comericals.
What if I my preferences don't rank high enough to warrant an expensive comerical?
"I'm sorry, but that is neodarwinian fascist nonsense. Nobody is hard wired to do *anything*. We are all humans, and we all have a choice. We are not automatons, driven by instinct."
hmmm...let me check. Yup, I'm a primate and I know I have some instincts driving my choices...
A local radio station, 96.5 in Houston www.khmx.com , plays 80s music every Friday. Last Friday the DJ brought in his own stuff because he was tired of hearing all the same 80s music over and over again. The problem...all his stuff was on Vinyl and they couldn't find the station's turn table. They eventually got an intern to search around for the turn table. After 3 hours searching they found it in a closet under x-mas decorations!
Personal responsiblity tends to disappear once money enters the picture.
I'm tech support for a group of lawyers. Some of the dumbest cases are based only on greed. In one case, our client wasn't even envolved in the accident. It was a convence store accross the street from a car accident. The injured party got enough money from the insurance company ($450,000), but the money ran out last year. So three years after the fact they are bringing a suit against our client....
greed...plain and simple.
I'm all for lawsuits...I just wish we had a way to distingish the silly ones from the real ones.
You're sort of correct, but what I got from the article IMHO is the MPAA got Excite@Home to be big brother. I don't want my ISP turning into the police...
In my mind this is a kin to major company knocking on your apartment manager's door to tell them they have to kick ya because you're stealing from their company.
I'm sorry, but I'd hope my 'apartment' manager wouldn't kick me out until there's a warrant...
until then I'd say the company's blowing smoke...
MHO of course...
Gosh...you're making me feel like we need to form an union or an army...
yeah, an army...we'll take over some bit of land nobody wants (like an island), firewall ourselves in and wait for end....
oh wait...that's already been done.
seriously, this will all just cycle around...don't believe me...just wait until you hear that prince song in the year 9999....

I wonder what sites I visited in my youth.... :)
Cash-less? I'll believe it when I see a bum with a credit card machine asking for a buck to get a 'bus ride downtown!'
Would someone please post the list of banned songs here or at least mirror it to a neutral site...
I'm being smartfiltered trying to visit f%$#company.com
;)

--CNN should be rolling out a Slash-based discussion forum for top stories. Heck, so should Whitehouse.gov! --
I saw whitehouse.com. my first thoughts were only if they become free.
if you're surfing /. on UPS backup, maybe ISP availiblity durring a rolling black out is very important.
My suggestion is to go outside durring this time. It might have changed since last month.

Yup, the CEO traveled to alternative Earths. I saw a documentry about it on some cable station.
The travelers are called slipsters....or slid...something...
I think he got eaten by a dino.
Now there's a show I want to see reruns of!
:)

ooo...I forgot. I love the part where he's talking about 'no credit cards are needed' unlike porn sites.
last time I checked the supreme court said credit cards are an undue burden on adult websites...
hmmm...
I guess it didn't enter into Rep. Waxman's mind that free access to porn has been going on for a while....
I guess he's never heard of Usenet....

I'm so glad I live in America and not China.
I never want to worry about big brother.
We love ya Bill!
(When the first XP ad hits my TV screen, I'll be calling the cable company to force them to change my profile!)
RIAA/MPAA will stay away from the big companies...
But I wanted them to sue Micro$oft next for allowing Exchange to send files in emails.
Of course the next choatic mess would be when Micro$oft used the UCITA to take back their stuff...
this could be such fun!!
(y do I have a headache...)

must eat soon...
Don't say things like that...
We need Zero tolerance...it's what all these jails are for...
If we don't have Zero Tolerance, where are we suppose to get next year's garbage man? Mexicans are getting expensive to hire.

I better stop using digital crowbars to unlock my users password (forgotten) WORD documents...
what next? real crowbars?
My goodness, I didn't know using a crowbar to pop MY rusted shut gate could get me into legal waters...
I'm not going to worry about ADs in my FOV, I've got a family history of macular degeneration...
What I am going to worry about is getting fragged by someone to my left or right in 'Quake retina 3d'
