  1. Devlopment cycle on PlayStation 3 To Debut at E3 2005 · · Score: 1

Wasn't it the ushering in of the last generation that offcially established a targeted 5 year cycle between console generations?

I'm just having trouble finding this information surprising because I think we've all always anticipated five years between generations and now it looks like they'll be right ons chedule. If they demo at E3, the ship date is probably holiday season 2005, which is right five years.

Nintendo, Sony, and MS have all been acting like this is some huge leap forward because of competition I'm betting that's just more publicity, I think they have planned all along on five years. (I'll give nintendo a little slack I guess, since I believe they introdcued their last sytem a little later than anyone else.)

I always do my posts in a text editor to check spelling, and then cut and paste into the submission form. According to my saved copy, that link works correctly. And actually if I click on it now, on the slashdot page, it works also.

The editors reformatted this post to fit the link into the text, so my guess is, if something went wrong it was at that stage, otherwise I don't know what to tell you.

  7. Isn't the original intent discriminatory? on Pledge of Allegiance Ruled Unconstitutional · · Score: 2

There's a couple things several people seem to be missing in their arguments against this ruling.

    1. This addition to the pledge, simply the words, "Under God, " was added by Eisenhower after a private petition, in 1954. This was at the height of the cold war, and the anti-communist paranoia known as the red scare.

Now while you may or may not argue the real-life practical implications of having two words in or out of the pledge of allegiance it can well be argued that this addition to the pledge was designed deliberately to make a distinction between American Citizens and Communists. (Communists with a capital 'C' being specifically the Marxist type who rejected the notion of religion as fallacy designed to manipulate the masses.)

If that's the case, the recitation of the pledge of allegiance not only rejects the right to support that form of communism but essentially denies the same class of citizenship to those who would not choose to believe in a singular deity, or a deity at all.

    2. This "Minor" addition was done at the behest of small vocal minority represented by the Knights of Columbus. So in this case, a small group was able to impose a demonstrative gesture of patriotism, that up until recently was in fact mandatory in many school systems.

This somewhat weakens the argument of many of the legislators that this ruling is somehow out of step with mainstream thinking in America. While it may certainly not represent majority thinking, niether did its inclusion in the first place.

    3. Finally, when this became a statute, Eisenhower is quoted as saying, "From this day forward, the millions of our school children will daily proclaim in every city and town, every village and rural schoolhouse, the dedication of our Nation and our people to the Almighty."
So it seems that the original intent of this clause was indeed to indoctrinate the idea into our children that this was a monotheistic nation, and that somehow, the success or failure of this nation is either due to, or accountable to a supreme being.

That's not a notion I want my kids to be taught in school.

Finally, My own two subjective cents:

If the school administration, the parents, and the politicians are constantly lamenting the state of U.S. Public education compared to other wealthy technologically advanced nations; what if we spent that time time we are wasting on the pledge of allegiance to teach our the class one useful fact about our nations history, how to be more informed in civil or political matters, or how they could find avenues to participate in that government.

I would rather spend 2 minutes helping the children become better more informed citizens to instill a real and honest sense of patriotism in them, than to spend that time asking them to memorize rote empty declarations of allegiance to an abstract and unfamiliar governing body.

  8. The Real British Codebreaker on Review: U-571 · · Score: 1

I'm not commenting on the review, but I thought this little historical detail might interest those of you who follow such things.

While the capture of a German Enigma device greatly aided the allies in deciphering high-level German Communiques, The British had already been able to crack the enigma code for years. It began with what is arguably the first paralell processing electronic computer ever made called Collossus. It was just that cracking even one small communication could take days, whereas the posession of the machine allowed much faster translation and therefore much more valuable information. If you want to read more about this computer which preceeded WWII, Ira Flatoe writes an excellent essay about it in his book, "They All Luaghed."

Also, don't forget that the bulk of information used on gamespot's cheats and hints section, as well as their game guides comes from posts and FAQ's originally presented by cheat code central. (Which they credit on the page.)

Okay captain critical thinking, let's take a look at the "evidence" here. I replied to a post regarding BIAS on slashdot. My comments ponted out how the fact that the drug war was not started with the Clinton administration shows that the post to which I responded were just as BIASED if not more so than the slashdot article to begin with. You may also have noticed, had you not been so busy patting youself on the back for your bulbous temporal lobe, that I did not attack or defend a democratic, or replubican policy either way. You assumed (with no evidence) that I am somehow anti reagan/bush because I disagreed with the erroneous post above me. By the way, I'm an engineer, and the liberal arts degree comment shows a bias I couldn't make look more absurd than you already have. And really, with all your ivory tower academic praising of the logical deduction, where was your reasoning and evidence anyway? Or did you have nothing better to contribute than some personal crusade against theatre majors? Nice job Einstein. -Andony www.andonyx.com

Yeah, It couldn't possibly have started during the Reagan/Bush administration in response to the dramatic increase in Coke traffic during the eighties. The first drug czar couldn't possibly have been appointed before Clinton took office. And a politician must be on drugs, and/or liberal to support the policies in place when they took office if the majority of the public supports them, for good or for ill.
