The postman did not sell you the stamps. The United States Postal Service did. The USPS is a registered agent. Meaning they have no liability in the content which you request to be sent other than the laws handed down by the US congress. They are a monopoly. Buy providing me with a service for money and not having a charter/group of laws already laid out you are asking for problems. The USPS has a full set of rules and regulations which also dictate their liability. You selling me internet service without any sort of agreement or tracking are stepping on much less firm ground.
Your mailman did not provide you with a service for money or cost-sharing. I would much rather have a log to track where the file (kiddy-porn) in question went rather than have the cloud hang over everyones head. Ignorance is not going to fly if a serious violation took place without a written contract outlining your responsibilities as a reseller and your state law to back up that contract.
You right a colossal waste of time. Perhaps if we organized into a huge corporation and had someone with a huge ego running things we could slowly take over market share and then crush all who oppose us. Then we could slowly destroy all innovation and force our corporate viewpoint upon all others. opps yeah it has already been done.

When your customer trusts you with the financial information to complete a transaction you have taken on a great deal of responsibility. If you respect your customers and appreciate the business this would not be a problem at all.
This is just another example of why in our current culture trust and respect are hard to come by.
Currently I can look into the sky and see Stars and such for free. This is crazy. The RIAA business model could definately help them. Sue me if I attempt to look to the stars. Sue Telescope makers for helping me do this. Sue us all and make massive amounts of money for all the things you have discovered.;-)
How many people have been convicted using the offending software?
In order to be a den of thieves, you must have thief. If I own a dance club and you bust 2 people a week for breaking the law (selling drugs) in my restroom. Well at that point yes as a business/service I am failing at maintaining proper control. Simply stating that people sell drugs in my bathroom and "everyone" is doing it should not get me in any trouble. If these services are full of people committing crimes start nailing them and then shut the service down. How can a service/company possibly defend themselves if no crimes have BEEN PROVEN IN A COURT OF LAW!
This defense seems lame but it is even more lame to think of being brought on charges with NO FELONIES on the books. If 99% of the people use this service illegally this should be easy to accomplish. Then and only then can you attack the business. If we allow companies to be shut down without prior reason we will live in a much different society.
I just cannot see the Stuff that Matters please explain.
Please reread the headline and main page description. I as a businessman would pay for an advertisment like that is the only point I am making. It is not a step forward in technology. It cannot really change my life and the wording seems to be straight out of a product brochure.
I am not trolling and I am not complaining I am asking a question to gauge other peoples reactions and attempting to understand.
Thank you if you take the time to respond and explain this to me.
No way would I write in to a trial on my opinion on any software I use. I mean come on the "users" are not the issue here and the fact that this portion of the trial is recieving attention is crazy. I love Adobe products and I enjoy using them daily. If they get to the point where the Federal Government is taking them to court, tough shit! You may make a great product but yolu must follow the law. Having the general public write letters is great but it had better not mean much vs. the evidence brought forth in a case.
Fine listen to my opinion to make sure any punishement is not to "rash". The bottom line is if you compete unfairly in business don't expect your loyal users to bail you out.
in 1992 I was working in Arlington, Virginia just outside of Washington, D.C. Anyway MCI was having a test in my neighborhod so I signed up. Hey I wanted the free T-shirt. Anyway for one month I had a new telephone socket installed and a new type of "cable box". For one month I had over 400 channels of cable TV and normal phone service (although it had so cool features that are commonplace today).
I only got to keep if for 30 days and then they stopped the test. This was before the whole cable/phone companies legal battles. At that time I guess they were allowed to test but then they sent a letter ending the test and explaining that they would not be offering the service in the near future.
Anyway I cannot believe that the technology is finally getting to see the light of day.
I mean come on. This is why MS can do whatever they want, even opponents focus entirely to much on MS. Great Billy writes an email and the world wants to analyse it. Please less MS news unless really needed. To hear all the MS shit I could simply go to MSN.
Sorry I am just getting real tired of one or two MS stories a day. Most of which don't seem to be very thought provoking. Yeah sure MS cares about trust and safety. Right after $$$$$$$$$$$.
I see a story on a Linux distro what three times a week? Yet MS get day after day of their name in headlines. Has Redhat, Mandrake, Suse released no news?! More balance would be nice is all I am saying.
I could not more fully agree. Wait to make Linux Gaming a must have. The corporate world is more ripe for Linux. Gamers needs tend to be changing and fickle. The corporate world tends to want the same thing year in year out. How much has word processing really changed in the last five years?. Also the largest advantage to Linux I have found is the ability to maximize old hardware. Gamers generally upgrade and jump at the whim of Nvidia and ATI.
The desktop market would add so much more credibility in the marketplace too. I am not saying to hell with gamers, just learn to crawl before you walk.

So what is the cost to you for that good book service. Amazon's patents are exactly why I do not order from them. I did order from them alittle over two years ago and yes they are excellent at what they do. That said, noway am I buying from them. There agressive patent tactics leave me feeling dirty when at there website.
AOL Time-Warner 2 year average is 9.1 Billion in earnings per Quarter.
Microsoft averages between 1.5 - 2.5 Billion in earnings per Quarter.
AOL Time-Warner should scare you 4 times as much as MS. Neither company is in the business of your interests and looking to either for fair business tactics would be foolish.
Ok how is modding this up?! I have NEVER in three years seen one person claim to intend to attack anyone. I have no doubt someone here has participated in this sort of behavior however I would guess the vast majority do not have the time or patience for this sort of activity.
Also Slashdot rarely points out a company as a bad thing. News stories are posted and we as a community then add our input. Slashdot the website itself does not critize companies the users do.
Blanket comments such as yours is exactly how a whole group gets misunderstood and a reputation it does not deserve.
Adobe going open source would kill the company in less than one year. A publicly held company transitioning to your proposed model would be completly impossible. The whole value behind there stock is currently their ability to create revenue through commercial industries. Who purchases Abode software. Well 92% of revenue is from sales to companies/institutions. NOT HOME USERS! They have no reason to cater to us. Wake up just because you want something free does not make it a good idea.
In the interview Schmidt's background included the military, FBI and local law enforcement. Seems like a nice enough guy. Any Ex-Military, FBI, Law enforcement trained individual is going to look at security in a control and constrant sort of way. Schmidt appears to be good at security and an honest person, this does not mean I want him to make policy or be left unchecked. I am just saying he seems allot more like a showpiece for congress than a Microsoft employee. The corporation is the problem not some expert on military systems security. Not much to this interview other than the fact that Microsoft is really good at politics. How many companies lose a monopoly trial and end up expanding while writing their own sentence.
Patching occurs on all software that is well maintained. I would be very upset if all companies did not patch software. I agree that updating a system can be a nightmare but without it trouble will soon follow. No matter what the OS/application is a progressive series of steps is important to making a mature product. Many open source products get their strength from the fact that work is not only always being done but that end users in theory receive a better product threw a testing process. Patching may not be a pretty name and Microsoft has a way of making anything feel dirty but it is a good step even if a company I don't support takes it.
Oh yeah just my opinion I could very well be wrong.
5 Networks all in the business of making money. I can imagine millions of american families paying upwards of $500 a pop for a service like this.
How do they miss this as a source of revenue? First they allow the cable industry to bite into the pie now another group of companies giving their "customers" services they would be more than happy to pay for. Sounds like just bad business moves.
Is the product illegal or wrong. Of course not. There is plenty of FREE TO DISTRIBUTE TV available. The local channels and PBS. A product cannot be illegal if it does not break the law simply by exsisting. The only real crime here as that their own "customers" will be going to companies that actually offer a piece of hardware for their services. A purchase of a TV and VCR can provide the same services they object to.
It is all about the money involved in our purchasing habits. American culture is constantly wanting more and more entertainment by digital means. The TV industry looks like a lame investment of money. Wake up and offer what the people ask for. Otherwise the product exists and it will continue. The american dollar always can purchase.
If this you really want to learn a good place to start is www.linuxnewbie.org
When I started I found the site to not only have easy to read information but also a nice structure for just beginning.
As to your question mounting the drives is a software based situation. The actual location of the drives is not relavant. Please go to linuxnewbie.org and read for yourself it will be fun and helpful at the same time.
Ummm. Lets see MS employees over 40,000 people in the State of Washington with Total Employement Taxes in excess of 100 million. What could you buy with 100 million. They had better have weight in the State of Washington and the City of Seattle otherwise it is time to move.
I am not for the business practices of MS. That said Business that contribute to the society around them should have a "hometown" advantage. I live in VIrginia and although I am not a big supporter of AOL there tax money does make the roads I drive on alittle better.:-)
