I'm most annoyed by RealOne Player automatically registering the MIME type of a file I opened with it to itself, even after setting the option not to "periodically check for file associations" for me. The only thing that keeps me from blinding hatred for Real is that they release their code a version after it's obsolete, keeping my complaint down to a low grumble.

I think as the net gets more and more mainstream, it becomes safer and safer to share your personal information online- I think it'll get to a point where it's as safe as real life- whether that be sharing your phone number in your sig, writing your name on a bathroom stall, or filling out all the info on a Church flyer. That is, real life isn't that safe either, but it's safer than what we fear online. Also then again, I'm not in the right demographic for my claims to be bold. If I were a 16 year old girl saying the same thing, these words would have a different weight behind them. Instead, knowing that I'm a 23 year old male and having a phone number of 603 330 3532- I just proved that it's not a big deal cause there ain't but nobody who's gonna look that up, much less call it, and MUCH less stalk me by it. :D "As the Internet becomes less and less an exclusive club, it becomes a universe, common to all, and sacred to none." Eh. maybe some places. I am the netadmin at a random nameless ISP, and I've never, ever been told to in any way, shape, or form tweak with a customers settings. i sit in the tech center, along with the call center reps (who do WAY more work than i, as netadmin. they are the heroes at my company, not me). in sitting with the tech reps, i WOULD get physically abused if they had the slightest notion I was messing with things. I don't mean to be contrary- I respect you as a known, intelligent slashdotter, but I cant really think of a good reason for an ISP to randomly disconnect users. Users get angry, and call in. That costs money. I think it costs us like 80 cents for a 60 second call, when you calculate overhead in. When you're a mom and pop company (still a few of us as ISPs!), pennies count. Then again, I would LOVE to get in the head of an AOL tech, one with a good understanding of the secret big ISP mantra. Maybe when you're not the biggest, good connectivity and excellent customer service stand to be the only venue to success. (and if anyone in the call center where I work reads this, let me know in person and I'll grab you a biggie fry :D)

Most all dial-up boxes are purposely misconfigured by the ISP to ensure they drop the connection at the sound of a pin drop. I've been told so by the person at said ISP who has had an opportunity to view the config of these boxes.

There's no admin who is competent enough to understand how to configure a terminal server enough to let you connect, but threshold it enough to drop you randomly but shortly afterwards, who is working for a dialup ISP. They're all working in house for Fortune 5 companies :D

I'll start using this if you can sell me on one worry I have about it- what if I execute some automated task that uses an email interface to get back to me? I don't know who it's going to come from, and I've trained myself to ignore the bulk folder (or am checking it regularly, which is the same effort as not filtering to me). I'd have to say this effectively blocks everyone but people from writing. Very cool, but I could end myself up in trouble with it. And yet I'm still considering installing it :D
