    We had just started a massive subsitidezed transportation infrustructure and incentivized building boom based on a car-centric philosophy that would lead to horribly inefficient housing, the loss of usable public transportation, a dependency on foreign oil, and a rise in the cost of living over the next half a century.

    I do not hate ABS, and I would not turn it off if I could. I know that in many situations I could stop in a straight line faster without it, but I prefer to be able to steer while braking hard.

    ABS is designed to make the car steerable under hard braking and to make braking simple for drivers who are not good at it. It has long been known that it does not necessarily decrease straight line stopping distance.

    Medical insurance is straightforward to deal with, and a necessary expense. High-deductible plans are great. You are thinking of managed health plans/HMOs.

    Joe 6-Pack cares about the cost of gas at the pump, not the cost of crude. If we stop subsidizing car traffic by cutting subsidies for oil, refining, road building, maintenance, and parking space and let the price of gas (and tolls and parking rates) go up accordingly, Joe will notice.

    The second half of the 20th century was an experiment in car-centric city planning. It failed.
