Can this be easily ported to Mac OS X? I have no idea about the technical aspects of that, but I see it will run on BSDs, and, from what I understand, Mac OS X is a relative of those.
They want computing that works like TV does -- that's easy to use, takes little space, costs relatively little money and works every time you turn it on, year after year
Doesn't that describe the iMac perfectly?
Computers -- even the jazzy new iMac -- are a long way from reliability...
It's not reliable? It hasn't even shipped yet! Sheesh, can it be released before you write your review?
I complain about not having DVD playback because I paid extra for a DVD drive in my B&W G3. Now it doesn't work. They promised DVD playback in the point release, but later rewrote that to exclude hardware DVD players.
Isn't the Denver airport installing free 802.11 transmitters? I hope this cash cow won't impede that movement. Also, they want me to pay a minimum of a dollar to look at (I counted) 10 ads surrounding web content? Uh, what's that word... oh yeah, it's NO.
Why don't we start an OS movement in this field! Open Nose! Get the community to share the smelling duties. Maybe even distributed. Sorta a NOSEY at home project?
You got that right! One of his "major flaws" of OS X: The close window button is too small! How big does it need to be? Also, he wants to get rid of the Desktop. OK, fine. How? What a whiner! He did some great work on the original Mac, but what have you done for us lately, Jef?
Also, if you watched that video, it appears that Jef's earpiece had pretty bad "interface design" too. hehe
of the nature of the game! What I really enjoyed about the Sims is that there is no real "goal." All sitcoms are these 30-minute packages where everything ends up fine at the end. Has this ever happened in a Sims game? It's not goal-oriented like a TV show plot, so I don't see how it could be carried through on. That, and there aren't really recognizable characters (like Mario, Sonic or other vid characters).
According to a conference call with Nvidia's Tony Tamasi, director of product management, it will be pretty even. Read about it here.
The relevant part is the second page. He says:
We have done some comparisons cross-platform and the Macintosh does very, very well. In fact, for a lot of applications, particularly applications that we tend to like at NVIDIA, which we call graphics limited applications, the Macintosh is equal in performance related to the PC platform for a lot of those applications.
So typically those would be applications that are running at medium to higher resolutions and have anti-aliasing turned on and/or are making extensive use of our graphics processors. To the extent that applications do that, in other words, the load of the graphics processor, then it puts less of the load on the host CPU and therefore less pressure on pure CPU Mhz.
IÕm sure thereÕs going to be cases that come up where the PC might be fasterÉa 1.5 gigahertz PC might be faster than a Macintosh. But I know there are cases where the Macintosh is actually faster than the PC as well. ItÕs just one of those things that your mileage varies based on the application. But thereÕs no major performance delta between the two, particularly for graphics-centric types of applications.
is that *nix & linux developers are paying attention to a different and mainstream platform. The whole point of the OS movement is inclusiveness. "Let's all work together to make something better." I don't want to sound too hippie here, but this could be a really great community. How many kids at home would become programmers but for their parents buying an iMac? With MacOS 9, just a handful. With MacOS X, we've got something to work with. This is an awesome movement, and any little bit helps. If you don't see the point of programming tricks for OS X, maybe it's because you don't need motivation anymore. This is a real and (I repeat) mainstream chance for linux/*nix programmers to make a serious difference.

/. is a technology site
Time to read the header again. From here, it says "News for Nerds. Stuff that matters." Let's break that down. This movies may be for nerds. I saw it yesterday, and it sucks. So part 1 of the slogan applies. Part 2: Stuff that matters. In the USA, entertainment has been elevated to this category, so we'll have to deal with that. As for your comment, I don't see anything about technology in the header. Also, this is not your personal site, but you are free to setup your preferences to ignore the movies category altogether. Read the faq, and quit yer bitchin'.
There is absolutely no way this is true, because, uh... The thing is, ummm. Just like that guy was saying to me the other day. You know, about the... uh, stuff. About the memory thing.

Now you can be a lonely isolated loser out in public!
No wonder /. has such good bandwidth. Are they spending ONLY $250,000 for hosting?

Actually, today Rumsfeld said "we're not running out of targets, Afghanistan is running out of targets."
If it doesn't come in an easy to use powder, then I'm just too busy for it. I'll learn to live with my plague until it fits my hectic lifestyle.
Weird, my vision of my future operating systems has nothing to do with Microsoft. Wonder how we missed each other?
Now that's a fantastic thing to do. That could change some lives. Good work, Apple!
With all that stuff on your desk, what on earth do you need an apartment for?
Good lord! Clean that office!

Can I use Babelfish to translate this, or has M$ bought Altavista yet?
I just like that you woke up at 9:46 PM! Tell me you're not a web guy! ; )
Mulder? Who's this Mulder?
Why is this classified in /. as Movies? Shouldn't this be a Copyright story?
