Very, very sad news, he was probably my favorite scifi author..I hoped he'd manage to see his latest book The Quarry get released before he died, he even worked with his publisher to hasten the release for this summer and now this...fuck
To whoever reads occasionally the kernel list, there are no news here. This could fit in the Sun's or the "OK! Magazine" inner pages, but./'s front page? Really?
First of all you should ask if ISDN and T1 are "going the way of the dodo", not copper. DSL runs over copper too so copper is and will be relevant in the foreseeable future. Although it certainly depends on where you live, most businesses that migrate from ISDN/T1/E1 services go to DSL or FO. With DSL you have adsl, vdsl, shdsl, vdsl bonding, anything that can do EFM anyway, so copper isn't going anywhere anytime soon. For some end users that are too far for DSL, there are 3G routers and other wireless solutions. ISDN will eventually die but again that's what they say for FAX for so many years, so nobody knows for sure. And really, your dad should know better, the industry he is in changes rapidly and only those who can adapt to these changes survive.
taking into consideration the debt crisis that spreads in the western countries and its consequences (unemployment etc), the population will be out of work long before 2045. So no need to worry about those schemy robots taking our jobs!
One must wonder if BT is willing to force the ISPs that already have a SIP trunk with them, to sign this deal. Or maybe that's where they're aiming at.. Either way good luck with this stupidness
They could just go out and announce a competition for cleaning these 170 PCs for a maximum amount of, i don't know, 80k? and let the underbidding company take the job. Oh, and 190k for 170 *desktop* computers!?!?! OMFG thats insane money, that's above 1000 euros per PC which lets you buy a high-end system with a descent graphics card. What will they be doing on these, play Crysis?
Reading the summary I' say it's a good time to live outside the US......but then again history has shown that most western countries sooner or later copy the US laws, so damn, we're all fucked
Finally, this. People seem to take this always-online DRM so serious, like it's the end of the world or something. Noone forces anyone to buy these new always-online consoles or games plus there are and will be always other alternatives. Fuck the xbox and fuck their DRM, I call Faster Than Light better than any title that hit the consoles these last 2 years so no reason for excessive nerd-rage about the dickhead executives decisions in the big-title companies
It has been written again and again by many slashdotters, every time a stupid article came up about the supposed "downfall" of microsoft because of the Windows 8 failure and low sales. Ok tablets and smartphones are selling like shit, but most people still have their 5-year-old or so PCs/laptops around with windows XP or 7. Unless you're into gaming, there's just no need to do any fucking upgrade. Why go out and buy a new laptop with windows 8 or upgrade your existing windows to 8 ? Will it make browsing or receiving emails or writing a document or watching a video faster or better ? No. Will people stop using windows anytime soon? Again no. Why? Just look at the alternatives: OSX ? You need a Mac which is expensive. Linux? Nope, if you ask any casual user they wouldn't consider it for a bit. Hell, i'm into the IT industry and i have colleagues who are laughing at the idea of switching to a Linux OS because they want something that "just works". So no, windows ain't going away in the near future.
As for the enterprise, AD/Exchange are a big plus but i think the biggest advantage for Microsoft comes from Office and more specifically Excel. The only change that might hurt MS in the enterprise is the movement of big applications towards a web-based model where the user will only need a browser to use the application.
raises hope for the more than 300,000 babies born with the infection around the world each year.
Especially when the majority of these infants are born in "third-world" countries, where people can't afford the basic stuff like food and water, they'll be able to cure their infants with this new treatment because the big pharmas will provide it for free. Can't wait for this to happen, along with the sun rising from the west
Irrelevant to FreeDOS, a few days ago I was searching about MSDOS and in which language it was written. For whoever might be interested, there's a nice read here: What language was MS-DOS Written in?. Summary: MS bought the QDOS rights, QDOS was based on the CP/M OS which was written in FORTRAN
I second that. Years ago I worked for a company where we installed-supported logistics & accounting programs from a specific vendor. The main software, the vendor's "best-seller" was DOS-based. When they released the newest, Windows-only version which completely changed the user experience by the introduction of the mouse, most customers went nuts upon hearing that the DOS version was going EOL. They were used to the keyboard and having to re-learn everything and memorize where and what to click in order to go to the next field or print an invoice was considered unnecessary by the majority of the customers. The vendor eventually had to recall the EOL and to this day they still support & release updates for this decades-old software.
I'm so concerned about my personal data & privacy that anything comes from the likes of facebook, google etc and is marked as "free service" is a no-thanks
After destroying their economy and driving their countries into civil war in order to squeeze some more precious resources out from their soil, it's about time they retaliate.
I for one welcome our new Nigerian Prince Overlords

Now that's a blast from the past..in the 80s these were quite popular

By the people, for the people in other news, corporations rule the western world

Not so these last years, because since 9/11 the US citizens have abolished so many of their rights and freedoms in the name of the "war on terror"

started with the kidneys of recently deceased rats
replace rats with humans and as George Carlin said on using dead people as fertilizer, "you want recycling? lets get serious"
Visit the Openstack site and have this open on another tab. You're welcome

And then he shot Jar Jar's dead body. Again. And again. And there was much rejoicing.
I was about to post the exact same thing. they settled that lawsuit

So very true. I really hope they do this and it backfires
no other first-generation smartphone leader has been able to pull off this kind of rebirth. Palm and Symbian are dead and Microsoft is struggling
So the crap-failure that was Windows CE managed to make Microsoft a "smartphone leader" and on top of that they are now struggling for a rebirth?!?
