"Could this possibly be the hypothetical "pendulium" swinging back against graphics-intensive gore fests?"
Yes, Adventure Quake will truely be the point where "e-games" turn around. Our lives will truely be changed by this momentous event. Geeks will no longer be persecuted. This is a revolution.
At the moment, I'd say the best deal is 80GB hard drives at about $80. But a hobbyist can't afford 10 of those.
I don't think a hobbyist could afford an external drive enclosure for 10 drives either. As a matter of fact, I don't think it's quite "hobbyist" by the time you're up to 700 gigs:)
BTW, how many of those albums do you own? I have a friend who has close to 1000 CDs, and if we ripped them and only got 2:1 compression (you can get this with Shorten compression and it's lossless), that would be less than 500 gigs. Yeah, this may have passed from hobby to obsession.
See my post above, but let me ask again: isn't Classic that interpreter/emulator for OS 9? If it is still going to work under OS X on these new machines, then there isn't a problem. I've even heard some people say that classic has recieved some speed increases under 10.2 (I haven't tried this myself... I'm a "switcher" and have no software that needs to run under OS 9).
This isn't MOL for OS X, it's OS X on MOL. I assumed that pudge wanted to be able to run MOL under OSX, and then run OS 9 on there. But isn't that what Classic is for?
Yeah... I'd just like to see my name on the front page one day. Guess I'll have to do something worthwhile that somebody else will submit a story about:)

What the fuck do you have to do to get something submitted around here?
GPL: You can use it however you want, even charge $$$ for it, but you must release the source.
Thompson's License: You can use it however you want, even not release the source, but you can't charge $$$ for it (without paying the license fee anyway)
Personally, I don't think it's a big deal. If you don't like their licensing, don't use MP3. Until Ogg gets supported in hardware players though (pry my iPod from my cold, dead hands and what not), you won't see me switch.
Maybe if we have to suffer through 3D, they'll at least have the courtesy of making it look like a comic book by using cel-shading techniques (like those found in Jet Set Radio Future or it's predecesor)
"For now, my PC is safe from Microsoft forced modifications"
Mine too! Except that the reason for mine is that I just dumped XP in favor of Linux. I decided to try it out, at least for a month or two, to see if it truly is a viable alternative for me. So far so good... I'm playing a few Windows games in Winex, and I'm using the CrossOver Plugin for Quicktime/WMP sites, and I'm liking the results so far. My hope is that I'll find it useable enough for my parents to use.
For what it's worth, I plan on posting an article on my experiences somewhere, maybe Slashdot.
What are they doing on these general purpose machines? Are they essentially a kiosk to get online with? If so, maybe you should consider OEOne. This was previously mentioned on Slashdot a few days ago. It sits on top of Red Hat and looks like it gives the users the basic internet capabilities they need. I'm not sure how well it will lock down, however. I just thought I'd mention it since I'm thinking about setting up a box running this for my parents.

Granted, these dev tools require Windows but so does the Aurora toolkit for NWN.
I know at least one person who has gotten the NWN tools to work with wine. He even provides an RPM for those who don't want to tackle configuration.
"If the reader is connected to the internet and this is still not working, it is most likely because they created their music collection with an earlier version of Windows Media Player (7.0) and then upgraded on top of that collection. We did anticipate this scenario..."
Yes, we did not anticipate the scenario that you would ever need a media player other than WMP 7. What were they thinking? This right here should be enough of an example to show Joe Public/Congressman why DRM is bad.
I just picked up "Jython Essentials" from O'Reilly. It does a good job from the perspective that you already know some Java, and want to learn the basics of Python and how to integrate your Java classes.
As for the language itself, I think it would be extremely usefull for rapid prototyping of UIs if you're working with Swing (and aren't already using a GUI builder). It's nice to have the interactive interpreter so you can see your changes right away.

Who are you, JonKatz?
So does this have anything to do with Apple's uber-secret (except when it's posted on /.) project that has OS X simultaneously running on Intel boxes?
By forcing the migration away from OS 9, Apple moves closer to a processor-independent world where they could drop Motorola in 2-3 years.
Oh boy! Does that mean we'll get hardware DRM in OS X as well?

New products like this make me feel like I'm not keeping up fast enough. I bought a 100GB drive last spring and it's not even half full yet!
Don't worry, CowboyNeal... I'm sure there are a lot of Slashdot readers who only have 45 gigs of pr0n.
I sincerely hope that this wasn't moderated interesting because of the Ron Jemery comment.
"Nothing like classic Gauntlet with each player on their own PC"
I imagine they'll have an actual 4-player Gauntlet machine. Nothing like classic Gauntlet on the original 4-player arcade cabinet.
"...not just dreamed it up."
:)
Isn't that what a patent is, just an idea that has been "dreamed up"?

I suppose I could always use OGG and convert my files to WMA when I want to use them on the player, but that's really a pain.
Yeah, because Microsoft allows open use of WMA right?

More info about the series can be found here. A trade paperback exists, but I don't know where you can find it.

Software that monitors what web pages you view... Wait until they see how much time you're spending at /.
Wait, what are you doing here now? GET BACK TO WORK!
fair enough :)
Apparently the story is better the second time around.

I want the judge to just start laughing, along with everyone in the courtroom, and say "HA HA HA! That's like asking for kajillion zillion dollars!"
"The DOJ announced that they are planning to prosecute filesharers under the The No Electronic Theft ("NET") Act."
This bill is actually entitled Make'em Stop, Period--No Electronic Theft (MS.NET).
