Of course sales were low. The Linux version was late AND the game has ridiculous system requirements. Let's look at this logically.
Game with stupidly high system requirements released for an OS that prides itself on running on low spec hardware... Yeah, great move... Of course the damn sales were low... Perhaps if we get a game with sensible requirements released at the same time as it's 'doze counterpart we can make a FAIR comparison, but the sad thing is this is what will bury Linux gaming, since if Carmack said it, it must be true...
The problem with Quake 3 though is it did have pretty high system specs. I mean Linux is designed to run well on low spec systems, then a game comes along that requires Windowslike system specs. As sad as it is, I can't say I'm surprised. I don't know one person who has a system capable of running Quake 3, yet most of them have systems capable of running practically everything else Loki have released.
Another area where PC's excel is expandability. (That spelling looks wrong?!) Look at the user created material for Quake, Starcraft, hell, even games like Grand Prix 2. Add-on car sets, various utilities to hack the program, add functionality. With Starcraft you have user created scenarios and maps and for Quake, well, it's probably easier to list what you CAN'T get.
With a console you're stuck with what you're given. Games like the upcoming Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 have a "Create a skate park" feature which is great, but unlike the PC where you go off, grab a map and start playing in under 5 minutes, on systems like the PSX you need a Dex drive, plus memory cards up the wazoo to transfer stuff to your Playstation. If nothing else Internet connectivity on consoles would be useful for downloading user created levels directly into the machine.
The comment about text on NTSC is right on the money. Anyone on here who has Gran Turismo 2 for the PSX, go check out the car info screens. Take some aspirin while you're at it, you'll need them.
I only recently got my PSX, I rarely game on the PC anymore (except for reviewing Loki's stuff). PSX all the way for me, but Christian is right. Sports games, racing games and fighting games. Consoles spank PC's ROYALLY in this department. Go play WWF Smackdown for a while or Gran Turismo 2. The latter has ASTOUNDING depth with over 500 different cars (admittedly a lot are variants, but they are definitely distinct.) The best the PC has to offer is Need for Speed, which while a good series pales in comparison with GT2.
Conversely, Half Life, possibly the coolest first person shooter ever released, imagine playing that with a PSX controller... BLEURCK! Both consoles and PC's have their place. Christian is right on the money. RTS, FPS, PC's are where it's at, but when it comes to sports and fighting games, and in particular 2 player action WITHOUT a net connection, then consoles are the place to be. I recently spent 6 VERY fun hours playing WWF Smackdown with a friend and it beat ANY multi player experience I've had on the PC.
Both PC's and consoles can live in the world together. The gaming world is a better place with this situation. The problems start to occur when one tries to be the other.
DAMN! How could I have forgot that! Classic film, also has another legend in it, Peter Sellers. Hopefully PBS or someone will air a load of his movies now.
Apologies for the formatting in my first message. I got my HTML mixed up:) Was just reading elsewhere and it reminded me, he regretted doing Star Wars and allegedly convinced Lucas to kill Kenobi off in the first movie. A sad day. All the legends are passing away. Sir John Gielgud only passed a little while back:(
While most people will only say "the guy who played Obi-Wan", it's fair to say his talent was a little wasted in Star Wars. For those who want to see "the guy who played Obi-Wan" at his best, check out the following movies if you can. The Ladykillers
Kind Hearts and Coronets (where he plays 8 characters. Suck on that Murphy.)
The Man in the White Suit All of these are classics British movies from the 50's (Well Kind Hearts was shortly before.) The Ladykillers in particular is, in my humble opinion, a classic. You will be missed Alec.
because I love Bladerunner as much as the next person (so long as the next person loves Bladerunner that is) but while it's a good question, why is Scott's "word" considered official? Surely Phillip K. Dick is the only one who could give the OFFICIAL word since he wrote the thing. I mean come on, Scott could have said that Deckard was a fish with limbs grafted on. That would be just as official. Poor.
I remember the first firework display I went too. I was 4 years old. The guy in charge of it, for reasons I don't quite remember now (it WAS 25 years ago) he had a rocket in his pocket (no, I'm not trying to be funny, for some reason he had a small firework rocket in his pocket) and it somehow got lit. It exploded and badly injured his leg and as a consequence the display, which took plac every year, was cancelled indefinitely and never returned.
This put me off fireworks for years. Given that kids get injured regularly with fireworks, maybe there's something to be said for seeing the horrible injuries that can happen with them.
Regardless, if you're American, enjoy your Independence Day. I'm not anti fireworks, but what I saw was certainly a VERY harsh lesson as to the dangers.
Credit cards are such a bogus verification method though. I only just got my first credit card and I'm 29. I didn't need one before now. This means that had ICQ implemented this before last month I couldn't have used their "service".
I'm also willing to bet there are a LOT of people out there OVER 18 who don't have credit cards. I know 2 people, and I don't KNOW that many people, ones in his early 40's, the other is in his 50's, neither have credit cards. One is down to the fact that until recently he was homeless, the other has always paid cash for stuff. This whole credit card verification thing is such a STUPID and incredibly inaccurate method of verifiying age.
Completely correct. Given the piss poor level of documentation software comes with these days, unless the game comes with a big manual, there is absolutely no justification whatsoever for shipping in huge boxes. PSX titles are shipped in the right manner I think. You don't need more than a jewel case. The worst you get is a double case like for Gran Turismo 2.
Of course, there is another point. Maybe the size of the box is to "deter" shoplifting? I mean PSX games in every store I've ever seen are locked away behind glass, whereas software in big boxes is freely displayed. Of course, then there's the local Staples. They have Windows BOXES on display, and you have to ask at the counter for the actual discs and stuff. The irony is right underneath they have Mandrake, Corel Linux and all that, and they're boxes still have the good in. I guess more people shoplift Windows than Linux. Conclusive proof that shoplifters are stupid.
What does this mean to the future of the online gaming service, Bungienet? Can we expect to log in soon and see "Microsoft Bungienet". God, this is the most depressing gaming news I've heard... Well, ever I think.:(
IF this is the same Take2 that releases stuff on the Playstation, then we're screwed. They're releasing a line of "budget" games for the PSX, where to them budget means "Bollocks to this, it doesn't crash, ship it. So what if it's crap." I've not seen one good thing said about their current titles.
I know someone there and I've demoed the output of this and it's very impressive. I want to get one for my Palm, but until I can actually AFFORD it it stays on my "small objects of desire" list. The list is getting to be quite long these days:)
On a side note, I was at a site a while back that had music files and had MIDI files and referred to it as an "all but dead format". Needless to say I wrote and corrected the idiots mistake. MIDI is FAR from dead. Anyway, I'm preaching to the choir, so I'll shut up.
Shame this is US centric, Clive Sinclair should be inducted into something like this too. Sinclair is the ultimate mad genius. Don't know much about the man? Check this site out for full info on the man and the legend. He's the reason I'm into computers. I'm just glad he never used his power for evil:)
It's time's like this I wish I could program, but every time I head down that road I get distracted by the pretty lights and shops...
I hope this contest is a success. I love that kind of software, but it's pretty rare and hard to find, especially in Linux. I look forward to the results of this contest. Hopefully/. will cover the results when it's over.
I can see it now. Slashdot will have a sister site called SlashHaiku.

No it isn't. I mean the first real good pinball games were the Dreams/Fantasies/Illusions series. I played them to DEATH.
Since then there have been some good pinball games coming out, and recently there have been a few more pinball game releases. Okay, the computer is hardly like the real thing, but it's still fun, and they ARE still making them. I saw one just the other day called "Lula Flipper" or something.
If you're interested in some games, check out here. Admittedly they're all Windows and DOS games, but if you have the chance it could be fun.
Moving north, further away from Microsoft:) A small town west of Edmonton. If MS ever come to Calgary I'll be gone. Given this is a very MS friendly town. Finding Linux stuff is pretty tricky compared to what I hear about other places. And half the reason I'm moving is the cost of living. It's a total rip off. Yeah, MS would fit in perfectly here...
I live in Calgary too, lived here for 4 years, and I agree with the "culturally devoid" remark. It lacks any real character and only really has anything of note during Stampede. (I got on TV last year during Stampede.:))
I'm actually moving soon, more than likely out of Calgary. I know the story is false, but if Bill Door (my name for Calgary's mayor. Don't get the reference? Go read Terry Pratchett's "Reaper Man") says he'll welcome Microsoft with open legs^H^H^H^H arms then I'm glad to be moving since I have no desire to live in a city that would openly welcome the biggest corporate assholes in the world.
