While Loki are doing a great job porting games to Linux, there are a few problems. For example, for reasons I can't figure out, my 3dfx card works just fine in the console under SVGALIB. GLQuake works, life is good, but it refuses to work under X. Anything that requires a 3dfx card, or can USE one (like Myth 2 for example), if it's X based, I'm screwed and I can't find the answer ANYWHERE. I have tried EVERYTHING I can think of to get it to find it, but still anything running under X simply cannot see the 3dfx card. Anyone got any ideas to WHY?
What this leads me to is the various hardware problems. While processor speeds, ram etc... are all standard, I believe that hardcore Linux gaming, as in commercial games like Loki are porting, are going to have problems for a while yet. I mean I have this hardware problem which I can't find the answer to and their tech support seems unwilling to try and help with, plus there are innumerable other problems. Just go check out some of the groups on their news server and read about the various technical problems people are having.
Don't get me wrong, Loki are doing a great job and their developers kick ass, but until their tech support actually goes out of their way to help with something other than just giving dumb answers which rank up with "are you sure the computer is switched on?", Linux gaming is going to be mired in the quicksand of the same kind of hardware problems that used to occur years ago in DOS.
Okay, Metallica advocate the taping of their live shows. I heard Lars say this himself on CNBC. Now, say the release a live album. What's their stance on this then? It's their album, but they also advocated the taping of it.
Okay, this has been on mind for a while, and this seems like a good place to ask it.
I use Napster. I use it for "legitimate" purposes. I moved to a different country 4 years ago, but a lot of my stuff is still in England in storage until I can get it shipped to me. Now I use Napster to download songs that I DO own, but that are sitting with the rest of my stuff a few thousand miles away. This is not the question though, this is just to flesh out the background of the question.
The question is this. Practically everything I download on Napster I have on TAPE back in England. Now, MP3's are made from CD. While the area is grey, I believe it is legal to make a copy of your OWN CD for your OWN use. (Don't quote me, IANAL.) Now, my question. I own the tapes. Tapes are inferior to CD's, therefore, would you consider this "theft"? I have the tape, but am downloading an MP3 which is of higher quality. Is this more "illegal" than downloading an MP3 of a song you have on CD? After all, I only paid for the "inferior" tape version.
This has been intriguing me for a while now and I figured I'd post it and see what people think.
One of the best ways to eliminate boot sector viruses and the like is to make a BIOS change that will alert you if the program is in fact trying to access the BIOS.
That reminds me of when I first installed Windows 95. It would NOT install, and error message was appearing in very dark blue on a black background and I could hardly read it. Took me about 5 minutes to figure out it wanted to write to the boot sector. The main reason I mention this is that's a good thing to do, but only if you actually remember you did it. Also, IANAT (I Am Not A Techie) but if you've just compiled a kernel and need to run LILO, doesn't this mean reboot, enter the BIOS, reboot AGAIN just so you can run LILO?
While I'm all for a PERSONS right to appeal a ruling from a court, why the hell do Microsoft get a say? I mean for crying out loud it should just be a case of "Okay, hand me the axe." Bickety bam! "There you go, 2 companies." If Microsoft actual get ANY leniency at all in this matter then I think we can safely say that the DOJ are a bunch of wimps. In my opinion, each day that Microsoft continue to operate in their current manner is another day where innovation has had the life choked out of it. Freedom to innovate, I can't honestly think of one thing that Microsoft has innovated. DOS was bought from someone else, Windows is LIGHT years behind other OS'es, their applications, well, if being bloated and unstable is tantamount to innovation, then they innovate their asses off.
What with Microsoft and all the other crap lately involving MP3's, the UCITA, I just really do wonder what kind of world we're living in today. It makes me both angry and sad to see a world that is run by corporations, and seeing Microsoft make their suggestions as to how they should be punished just makes me realize how screwed we, the people who frequent/. and actually keep up on the all the in's and out's of the industry, are.
Yes, but the average user, the ones who WANT that functionality don't see any difference between E and GNOME or KDE, hence if you ask which WM they use they will say GNOME or KDE.
Yes, GNOME sits on top of E or whatever, but a lot of people don't realise this.
BTW, nice to see you have the balls to post with your real name, oh wait... Spineless.
Having seen the effect age can play on getting a job, I can honestly say that the computer industry is nothing special about wanting people right out of college. You only need to look around at the amount of people in their 40's and 50's who are laid off from work and have a hellish time finding other employment.
Programmers and the like have about as much job security as the rest of us. Their situation is nothing special really, we ALL get screwed:(
Well Enlightenment is my GUI of choice, and I personally think it kicks GNOME and KDE's ass. It is WAY less of a resource hog (anyone who says otherwise is a liar) and is much more stable than GNOME or KDE ever will be.
As for the original poster, well it's a friend of mine who wrote this in the original Gnome thread, so this AC has stolen it. Anyway, I agree with what he says, to sum it up, GNOME is crappy. It's kludgey, and seems like really badly written shareware. Nasty.
They do have funny version names. Me, I'll stick to using E. No start button, no taskbar, none of that crap. A nice sleek WM with excellent performance. All will bow before E.
That's good. The developers deserve SERIOUS kudos for the work they've done. Milestone 10 wouldn't do a damn thing on my machine, but 15 worked fine, just slow.
I look forward to them removing that code as the software is great aside from the speed. Anything to get the hell away from Nutscrape 4.5:)
I was using the previous build of Mozilla, and while it renders pages and scrolls much faster than Netscape, the program is SUCH a beast with the way it hogs resources. If I choose to open a new browser window, it takes about 5 seconds in Netscape on my machine, but Mozilla takes around 2 minutes, and to quit it takes 3-4 minutes to finish smashing the hard drive around. Shame, it LOOKS really nice, but it's tragically slow on lower end machines, rendering it almost unusable.
I hope they tighten the code up some so it may be usable on low end machines as it has a FANTASTIC amount of promise. The programmers kick ass!
Yeah, but what they don't mention is the people who die from food poisoning due to undercooked meat...
While my father in law died of cancer a little over a year ago, I find most of these studies to be pathetic. I mean come on, they just changed their mind about saccharine after all these years. It's bull shit.
For the record, coffee contains something like 17 substances that cause cancer in rats.
I hope it doesn't get moderated down as such. I just wanted to say that I'll be sad if OS2 does die. The one time I used it I really liked it. IBM got royally screwed, though they partially screwed themselves with marketing the thing. *sigh* I wonder where we'd be if OS2 was the dominant OS rather than Windows. Rebooting a lot less for starters... (Unless you don't run either and run Linux, to which I say kudos to you matey!)
I just HAVE to say this because it's been eating at me for weeks now.
Why the hell are Microsoft allowed to suggest penalties or restrictions? While I'm not denying their right to appeal, regardless of my personal opinion, why in the world should they be allowed to suggest what should be done? They were in court for breaking the law. I can see it now. "You've been found guilty of the crime of grand theft. What would you like your sentence to be?"
Microsoft should have as many rights as any individual in court. The right of appeal, nothing more.
I'm not a Canadian, I'm a brit who moved here 4 years ago. Given all the information I had to give them during the immigration process, they know more about me than they do about a lot of the native Canadians.
I bought the Linux for Dummies book he wrote. Completely worthless piece of shit. First thing once I realised this was keep the CD and dump the piece of crap.
He may be an advocate, but he can't write worth shit.
Since Mozilla is open sourced, surely *IF* the feature is removed entirely from the code, someone somewhere can maintain a patch to stick the feature back in. While Mozilla runs like crap on my system (scrolling is faster than NS 4.7, but everything else is unusable), I thought this feature was one of the best features I've seen in a browser, best feature since the ability to be warned about someone wanting to set a cookie. I can understand AOL and the like getting pissed at this, but surely as it's open sourced we can keep features, and add more like this.
I wonder if in 20 or so years we'll start to see medical problems arise from exposure to computer related substances? By that I mean something similar to the asbestosis suffered by people who worked with asbestos back before they realised it could seriously damage your lungs. (Or back before they decided to tell anyone.)
Be a tragedy of monumental proportions to see the industry that has pushed forward the boundaries of technology so far wind up costing people their lives.
I have to agree. At the moment I go out of my way to avoid Java. I have a P166, but Java is just too slow by FAR. On a fast computer I think it has it's place, but for people who like to stay back from the technological curve, if only so everything they have is supported in Linux, Java is unusable right now. I regularly have to use a java program (the only one thankfully) and when you click on a button, it can take upward of ten seconds before the action actually does anything.
Of course Java does have the one benefit of being ostensibly platform independent. I mean you can't say everyone should move to C, C++, whatever, because there is nothing to currently compete with Java. Maybe if something appears in competition the way it works may be optimized.
Why are people interested in what is effectively a big chunk of rock? I mean don't get me wrong, examining planets and galaxies is cool, but why bother with an asteroid? It's just a lump of rock. The only reason we should be paying any attention to asteroids is if one is headed toward us right now ready to end all life. Not that that would be a bad thing really.
It wasn't Mages, it was Mazes. Good movie. I only remember one little bit, with Hanks saying about hurting some bad guy with his magic prunes... Maybe he said runes...;)

Go in peace my friend. These are dark times.
So this means NASA went all the way to Mars then? Or did they just set up a really long tube from Mars and syphon the air to Earth?

Yeah, but they are good at making toys. I mean look at Windows...

When did you decide to make the change from being a kick ass metal band to the corporate whores you are today?
