Valve made a lot of promises and have failed to deliver them. Now they're putting out a sequel. The piece clearly says about stuff through the summer. In other words L4D is genuinely Left 4 Dead in November, as it'll be done.
Sad thing is, poetmatt, that gamers ARE sheep like that. It's how EA get to sell the same game every year with minor updates for all their sports franchises.
I will not be buying L4D2. I expect money grabbing and greed from EA, but Valve are clearly trying on an Evil Suit to see if it fits.
Well it seems to fit quite nicely, and I will never give the company a single cent of mine again. Not just for their games, but also through Steam. There are various viable alternatives (for example Impulse from Stardock. The new Company of Heroes on Impulse, I can just play it. No need for any resource hogging software in the background to be loaded) and Valve can take their newfound greed and shove it.
Sadly 99% of gamers will still line up like performing seals for Valve, despite them saying they're not buying the game. Still, doesn't mean there aren't a few of us who actually have a spine and some principles.
Perhaps if you greedy bastards didn't sell games at the price you do more people would buy them. Instead, for a lot of people, they can't just casually pick up a game and take a chance like you would on, say, a $20 DVD. $70 is a LOT of money to gamble on something that stands a 50/50 chance of being garbage. And no retailer I've ever come across will give you your money back under any circumstances, so you take a big chance buying most new games.
Perhaps if the industry didn't put out so much absolute garbage we'd be more willing to take the chance. Unfortunately they aren't willing to not release unfinished games, crap games, and so much other effluence.
They're reaping what they have sown. And all they seem to do is cry about used games and how they're losing revenue.
On mine my front page is simply a blank index.html to hide the directories. I have nothing important in there that people shouldn't see. I basically use it as a random file damping ground for various things.
Conceptual issues are irrelevant. The RIAA has big, high paid lawyers who will bend you over a barrel and rape your virgin ass all while telling the judge how you downloaded a song and are now guilty of tax evasion.
If they got Capone on tax evasion, they can sure as hell get you!
The funny thing is I'm running XP so am on DX9 and really saw no need for DX10. Just another graphics card upgrade that doesn't make the games any better.
Now if they could put out a card that improved gameplay and it only worked in Vista I'd be upgrading in a heartbeat!
Anyone who expected EA to be anything OTHER than money grabbing scum were deluding themselves.
However Valve are held to a higher standard and, until today, that higher standard was justified.
Ah well, the only way to vote is to vote with your wallet. Valve get moved onto the list of companies I refuse to support. EA is on that list. Valve will lose all future sales to me. Will it make any difference or change anything? Nope, because there'll be an endless line of suckers out there who pony up like the performing seals the industry has trained them to be.
I, however, will be saving my money for a developer who sees me as a customer (Stardock for example) rather than some sort of financial bukkake slut.
I'm sorry, but no. Yes there may be exploits. However, online play is good, and I have good experiences more often than bad. No friends (never seem to be around at the same time), just random strangers. Yeah, there's douchebags. Every game has them. (Try racing GTR Evolution on a public server sometime.)
I agree with the rest of what you said though. Orange Box was amazing value. Previous Valve titles have been too.
As it stands right now, L4D appears to be a demo we all paid $50 for.
I really hope in a few months we're all looking red faced and that Valve do the decent thing and make it an expansion at a decent price, discounted upgrade for existing customers, whatever. Really not getting that vibe though.
Except you most likely CAN'T give away your existing copy as it's tied to your Steam account.
And your final comment is ridiculous. "If you think it sucks, don't buy the game." Yeah, that's great if you somehow have a crystal ball and can see what a developer is going to do in the future with the title you bought. Looking at L4D a potential customer would have looked at TF2, which gets HUGE support, and look at Valve's history, which is lined with products that had years of support.
If you think you've gotten your value, that's lovely and wonderful. However some of us aren't made of money, especially in todays financial climate, and have different criteria for what constitutes "good value". TF2, for example, is great value. Now THAT is a title that could have justifable sold for $50 with it's massive amount of post release updates.
Had I known the game I was buying would essentially be mothballed a mere 8 months later, I'd have waited.
If you think Valve are going to evenly support BOTH L4D titles, you are deluding yourself.
Yep, this is a very uncool move from Valve. I mean look at the ton of content TF2 has gotten for free. Now L4D has had the one big update, and now the sequel is coming, which as it stands appears to be standalone.
When the original game cost $50, Valve are taking the piss. Very VERY uncool. If Valve genuinely do throw this out as a full price sequel, I will never buy another Valve title again.
They screwed my friends and I over once before with the bots for Counterstrike, removing them from CS 1.6 so they could sell them in Condition Zero after my friends and many others beta tested them, submitted bugs, and were led to believe they'd be released properly for CS. (Valve even went so far as to remove the "Bots Removed" info from the changelog for 72 hours before admitting they were going to be CZ only) and I eventually relented and picked up The Orange Box etc... Bought L4D back in February.
What a bunch of garbage. L4D was fine out of the box.
As for this "sequel"... SCREW YOU Valve. What the hell? A full blown sequel a year later? That basically tells everyone who bought the game that we paid to beta test. This is just rampant money grubbing piss taking.
Unless there is some sort of upgrade deal for existing L4D owners, Valve can shove it. Bought the game back in February for full retail price, expecting the usual Valve support and they pull this. Not cool.
I am an avid gamer, but can genuinely say in games I have NEVER collected all of anything. Oh sure if I find them it's a case of "Hey, I found one!" but I have never hunted them out, nor found them all. Ever. Just doesn't interest me in the slightest.
Collecting arbitrary stars, comics etc... In games just seems utterly pointless to me.
The thing is FPS games do NOT work on the iPhone. Lot of games don't. Any game that requires your hands to cover half the screen is largely useless to people with big hands. May just be me but I can't get used to games with no tactile control feedback.
Funny thing is with this is there was a version of QUAKE on the pre 2.0 jailbroken firmware.
The one I've always had from tech support for various computer manufacturers is to format the hard disk. I guess reinstalling the OS is the same, but AST (do they even still exist?) I had a major hard drive problem. Spoke to three different people and they all said to format. I wound up managing to get into Windows and running scandisk with automatic repair on. Took 3 hours but I got my HD back.
In fact the ONLY time I've had to admit defeat was a few weeks ago when I just could not rescue my Windows box from a driver issue.
So you're advocating hacking his account. Classy. Where do you people get off? Christ, given some of the people I've known in MMO's when I used to play, if you were found hacking their account, you would be dead. Seriously, I know several people who if you did that to you would lose it and kill you where you stand.
Nobody has any right to hack into someone elses accounts and delete it. Honestly, advocating that is sickening.
Regardless of the fact it's only a game, imagine how YOU'D feel if some asshole deleted the product of a year or two of your hobby. Like say you're into Warhammer and I come along set fire to your models "for your own good".
Religion has led to more deaths throughout history than anything else.
If you're religious you believe in an imaginary guy in the sky looking down on you. And you have the audacity to think the guy mentioned in the post has a problem.

Cry me a river.
For a lot of Internet uses it'd just read a one word message.
"Vacant".

He is absolutely 100% correct. Stick your need for a citation where the citation don't shine.

It was a great service, yep. I loved using that. It seemed so futuristic and exciting.
Now I can access all the content from my iPod... But I'll always have a soft spot for my Palm's crappy little screen.
Are you from ETS?

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice...
"This time we actually released a full game. HAHA to all you suckers that bought the first one. Wankers."
It sucks when the sports titles do it at but at least there is some justification there.
What a bunch of garbage. L4D was fine out of the box.

"a small notebook PC for very basic tasks"
I would never trust Windows to do anything OTHER than very basic tasks.
It's like trusting a 3 year old to stack all your fine China.
Then clearly you people who broken your browsers as it's working fine on both Firefox v2 and v3 for me.
Had the same thing with one of the v8 releases. Can't remember which one but all hell broke lose and it just all went wrong.

Too bad you've been modded down. With any addiction, the person has to WANT to quit. You achieve nothing by forcing them too.
(We'll ignore the debate over whether playing MMO's like this is an "addiction".)
