Microsoft making game hardware is like Ford making refrigerators. Branching out is one thing, straying so far from your core competencies (i.e. what you are good at) in an industry plagued with losses is not smart for shareholders, yourself included. Microsoft is sitting on piles of your money, and they keep throwing it away on game consoles with no end in site. Sony lost $1B so far on the PS3. Microsoft loses that every year, year after year (approaching six years now)! I don't own any shares, but if I did I would want my share of Microsoft's profits in a dividend, not thrown away on a lost cause like Xbox. The cries to bail out will only get stronger as PS3 creeps up on Xbox360 in global sales...
These are the same guys who put root kits on audio CDs. I don't like him no matter how many times he refers to the "Web 2.0 blogosphere"
Uh, no they aren't. Sony Japan bought a record label many years ago. Nothing to do with SCEA of which Phil is the president. He probably doesn't know anyone from the record side..
And PSP is awesome. Besides the hundreds of commerical games, the emulators are amazing. I Can't imagine being tied to stupid TV set for gaming anymore..
That site has a ton of XBOX360's in stock, so I guess they aren't selling either. And holy cow, look at the DVD's sitting on the shleves at Best Buy. Obviously NO ONE is buying DVD's anymore! Otherwise they would be sold out....right?
The BB in downtown toronto had 15 ps3's last week. (And dozens of PSP's and DS's.) This week they have 2 PS3's left so SOMEONE IS BUYING THEM. There are, what, 50 BB in canada? At 60 per month, that's 3000/month in Canada alone. They are selling, just like Xbox360, psp they are just not in short supply.
Can we please drop the stupid 'they are in stock so that proves no one is buying them' concept?
And while we are on this topic, can we also please drop the 'I don't know anyone with a PS3 but I know for a fact that everyone on earth wants a Wii'
note the DVD market doesn't include rentals which dwarf any online game revenues. And yes the studios get a cut of rentals from the major chains. And the OP said "movie market" which technically should include theaters, another 7.4B
Sony wants BOTH and blur-ray is the way to do it.
Even if blu-ray fails for movies, why can't it be a game machine format? Have you ever seen a movie off a N64 Cartrdige? Why didn't we all mock Ninentdo for making a 'propietary' cartridge back then? Is the DS lite cartridge format a failure because no one watches movies on them?
Do the $7 cards you pick up work with XBOX360? Because Microsoft seems to think wireless alone (no extra 40Gb, no card reader)is worth...wait for it... about $100.
Who ever said VOIP? The requirement is "over a public computer network". The internet was not the first public computer network. Did CompuServe ever allow voice calls? How about BBS's? Fido?
The patent is overly broad. So we are NOT stuck to "VOIP only" to break it...sheesh!!
You state theory like fact. Are you from Kansas? You also use such a long term that the OP short term outlook is still a perfectly valid theory and not in conflict with your theory at all.
op:five years from now I am going to buy a new car! you: yeah but in 10,000 years the car will be rusted away" op: wtf? you: you heard me, in 10,000 years your new car will be all gone. Unless someone invents a super rust proofer!
I'll take the happy earth without humans theory as an intermediate step. I even propose that the time earth survives without humans will be significantly longer than the time it had to suffer with humans.
The whole point of the thread was to give an estimate. "hard to say" is not an estimate.
An estimate would be "I install firefox, adblocker, Textmate, macports, adium. All in all I ESTIMATE it takes about 3 hours to set up a new OSX envrionment they way I like w/o using the obscure settings transfer option"
You forgot the part where they illegaly stole the entire market for cars and tires by lying, cheating and ripping off their cusomoers and non-customers alike for billions.
Then they release a new car, with new tires and new specifications and did NOT tell anyone what the specifications are. So you have to blindly buy from microsoft without even knowing what you are buying...at twice the price of the old tires of course!
If we had as much detail about MSFT protocols as you describe about the tires there would be no problem. We don't and that *is* the problem.
Excuse my ignorance, but doesn't the DS already play Ultima's, Might and Magic, etc becasue they were released on SNES originally?
I have a PSP and all the ROMS for NES/SNES (and GBC/GBA, N64m intellivsion, etc)and it plays them all. I currently have FF5 and Zelda:Link to the past in progress. And of course Daxter in the UMD drive if I want to go modern:)
I did nothing to the PSP, just unzipped a zip file onto the memory stick. Shrug.
How can the US be slammed for protectionism when we don't let anyone in the US to do online gambling?
Becasue you do. There is lots of online, remote gambling allowed in the US. And the govt gets a nice little fee for each bet placed. They DONT get the fee for each bet placed in Antigua. So they whine and cry and declare it a 'moral issue'. Can't have it both ways. Either shut down las vegas and every OTB parlor in NJ , or shut the hell up.
It doesn't make any sense at all. The claim is that Nintendo, having easily met their fiscal goals, deliberately clamped production/shipments. First, so long as you don't appear to be sacrificing long term stability, investors would love for you to exceed your goal. Nobody complains about making more money, and I can't see why Nintendo would.
It makes perfect sense. Investors would much rather see a company make their goals for two years in a row, then to have one high year, followed by a dissapointing year. Consistency is rewarded. Nintendo would rather stall for a few weeks then sell everything they can *after* April 1st so fiscal 2007 looks as good as 2006.
The biggest latop drives, are what 100G? Maybe 80 usable with a lean XP isntall on there? So even if you brought a laptop with you would run out of space in...30 weeks?
I guess you won't be taking a year to go backpacking then. Sorry. And I would sure hate to have to sit through the slide show after your 30 week trip..."now we have tweny more pics of the local bat population, each on a true master that I could not bear to delete..."
Yeah, or you could read the reviews of the blu-ray dics where they clearly state the PQ of each release. I head they are widely available on this 'internet' thing. I guess if you had this 'internwt' access thing you would be better informed.
"To be honest, I like this transfer, but I don't love it. 'Casino Royale' is actually the first film I've seen more than once in theater since, I believe, 'Jurassic Park' (in 1993!), and this 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 presentation does a pretty good job of approximating my experiences at that theater. But it also looks a bit digital and artificial. I'm certainly all for the filmmaker's intent, but even if that is the case here, I can't deny that the sheer level of detail rarely reaches the heights of the best Blu-ray titles I've enjoyed, and though the image does have pop, I wasn't consistently blown away."
So you may have made the right choice this time...but there is no point in guessing!
And XBox's ONE JRPG, Buee something or other, comes on,what FIVE DVD's? Because you can't play games with the HD-DVD drive? yeah, that's a sweet setup you got there, for MORE than a PS3.
Are you saying it should NOT be possible for Sony to supply all the PS3's the Uk wants? They have been making/storing them for 6 months to get ready for this!
You are suggesting they are only succesful if they are sold out. If they sell 1M in UK alone, but shipped 1.1M then PS3 will be a failure? Really? Put it another way : If there are only 100Wii's available in all of the UK, but there are 150 potential buyers than the Wii is a massive success...but if there are 150 PS3s availabe and 150 PS3s sell than the PS3 is a massive failure.
Got it. The less they sell, the more succesful the product is. Makes sense.
Maybe network engineering is different to software engineering in this respect, but university was a big waste of time for me.
They are very different, but neither is waste of time if you are doing what you studied - or anything close to it.
My past, present and future employers are more interested in years of experience and skills. They don't particularly care about my degree.
And yet, they wouldn't be talking to you if you didn't have it...

Uh huh, because that's what the nice task manager told you?
Try removing all the RAM in your server until you only have, say 576 (512+64) left. If you are really only using 600M, then it should run just great...right? You users won't even notice. You may even get promoted for saving money on RAM!
SQL server alone defaults to 'use all available ram' so it will eat up whatever you have as soon as anyone starts using the datbase(s)....
JON
on 2nd thought, maybe that is the guys problem, to OP: if you have SQL server on there, manually set the MAx ram setting!
Uh no, it's about tax dodging pure and simple. In the United Sates you pay an income tax based on your annaul earnings for that year. Your employer reports all the money they paid you directly to the IRS.
If you are self employed you must file report your earnings to the IRS yourself. (being self employed has advantages, tax-wise, so self employed people usually do report...) The IRS is , with good reason, questioning whether or not all those ebay sellers are reporting their income like they are supposed to and indeed if e-bay is not acting like an employer for them.
Makes sense to me, what were we getting all worked up about?

Sony's press report says nothing about reduced functionality. And nothing about fewer PS/2 games working on PS/3.
So we have a rumour of a rumour on top of a purely speculative compeletly unsupported assumption that is now a fact. Sweet!
