Not really, I don't recall them ever teaching me how to program. We were just expected to pick up languages left and right. Now the 4th year CS Programming Languages course is a different story...
gnu screen has a "split" screen feature, which allows you to split the screen horizontal subsections, thus allowing you to see multiple screens at the same time. it's not perfect, but it's sufficient for my purposes.
>Surely everyone has to realise that patent officers can't be geniuses in their respective fields, because the genuieses are off inventing and discovering things.
If you're into low level stuff, then here are 2 perfectly good projects that will last you a while:)
1. Write an OS
2. Write a Compiler
To the OSS zealots, I recognize that not everyone's hobby project is going become the next Linux or gcc, but it's just plain fun to tinker with your own projects. That's what it's about, right? Not ego, not trying to beat Microsoft/SCO, etc...
ok people, just because a lawyer write some stuff in lawyer-speak, doesn't mean it's the law. The lawyers know it, the judges know it, and the corporations who hired the lawyers know it. They don't mean shit!!
Then you ask: "why do they keep on writing jibberish that sound like legit stuff, when in fact it's just plain BS?" Well the OP is why. He bought that TOS stuff right up... *sigh*.
It's like one of those twilightzone episodes, if you don't believe the power of the monster, it'll simply disappear from reality.
The technology for delivering people into space cheaply and safely has to be developed sooner or later. (that's right, currently, we don't have either) Don't kid yourself into thinking that space travel for the masses is only hindered by the astronomical cost.
I always press "0" the first chance I get. I am convinced that navigating those menus will not get me to a human any quicker. BTW, pressing "0" will get you to an operator queue.
The propagation technique used by the latest so-called "virii" is primarily social engineering. Linux is not inheriently any safer than Windows in this regard.
So long as users see nothing wrong with executing arbitrary code attached with email from strangers, we'll never be safe.
dude, a lot more than 500 PEOPLE died over there... you just don't hear a daily report from CNN on how many civilians your country killed on a daily basis.
Wait, non US'ians aren't people? oh... ah, never mind then.
I report all mistaken anti-virus bounce as spam to DCC, Pyzor, Razor. Since the primary motivation that anti-virus companies set bounce as default is to advertise their product, I consider it unsolicited mail.
SpamAssassin uses a scoring system to determine the "spamminess" of a piece of mail. Each test in SA has a score assigned to it by some fancy GA algorithm. The way I do it is sort my incoming mail by the SA score and pay attention accordingly.
Since they will add the offender's on to the blacklist, make sure you report that spam at http://www.habeas.com/report. That way the next unfortunate receiver of that spam would have adjust their score accordingly.
Good point about the frozen corpses bit... you'd think having a dozen astronaunts blown to bits in a span of 20 years is bad enough PR...
I'm not too worried about the government spending insane amount of money though, what without a national rival like the former USSR. (no, I don't think the terroists are going to colonize mars) And the Chinese are just every bit as hungry for some national pride as any American, they are a practical people and realize that blowing trillions of dollars on sending people to Mars would be stupid.
In any case, I wouldn't mind seeing some serious Mars action before I die. But I'd hope that it will be for a good reason.

If not for people like Turing and Tutt, the Allies might not have won altogether.
gah, second omega == theta ... I'm a dumbass ...
I seem to recall 3 fancy capital greek laters:
...
Big-Omega, Big-Oh, Big-Omega
If I recall from algorithms class
1) lower bound
2) upper bound
3) average case (or something similar)
So isn't qsort Big-Omega( n log n ), and Big-Oh( n ^ 2 ) ?
PS: "Oh" *is* a greek letter, right?
An obvious fault that seems to go with out notice about sorting algorithms, particularly bubble sort is that it takes O(n^2) time to complete.

Here is my preference for internet "policing" in decreasing order:
1. user self-policing
2. ISP self-policing
3. federal government "pound-me-in-the-ass" policing
Good point. I concede that I know every little about so-called TCO reports.

However, as it would stand tomorrow, for whatever reason, the same Windows users switch to Linux, Linux would be far more susceptible to virus ...
My point is, this is primarily a user problem, not the OS.

who's going to enforce due-process? The cops can just keep your arbitrarily long ...
South Park got this covered already: Blame Canada!!
Are you a communist? Who the hell are you to decide the nurses and teachers should be paid better?
