  1. Re:Ok..how about taxes? on Discuss the US Presidential Election & the Economy · · Score: 1

First, I don't want to lose my job. I resemble that employee. Ok, maybe not, but it's a great slashdot mime.

Second, attrition get's to be a problem when you start cracking down too tightly on productivity. I left one job due to a "butts in seats" policy that I didn't agree with. They started requiring everyone to be in the office for 8 hours a day 5 days a week no mater how much over time you put in at night or on the weekends.

Third, no politician is going to do anything that forces a bunch of people to lose their job. This is part of the problem with allowing the government to control these things. When things go bad there isn't much they can do. At least in a private industry if things are going bad, layoffs are an option and the CEO will not get fired for making that good decision. It's a short term crappy situation for the people that get laid off, but at least the company may continue, grow and possibly hire more people. The government doesn't do this, it just re-adjusts taxes in hopes of getting more revenue. (Democrats prefer higher taxes to increase revenue, but this makes for slower economy and less transactions to tax, while Republicans favor lower taxes to increase revenue by speeding up the economy and making more transactions to tax) Either way those politicians would be out of a job if they cut other peoples jobs even if it was a good decision.

No, let me put together a car analogy for you that fits more closely.

Blaming Bush for the country's economic woes is like blaming the driver for where your car ends up. Sure you can point to the engine (people) for powering that car. Sure you can blame the wheels (banks) for carrying the car there. Sure you could blame the exhaust fumes (Democrats) for causing global warming. Of course you can blame the drive train (government) for allowing it all to be connected, but in the end it was the driver that persuaded all those parts to go where you ended up.

Actually it does have a lot of humor value. It was a joke that was made to parody the dot com era of business plans saying 1) register a .com, 3) profit. and then selling that to VCs that were handing out cash to anyone with that as their business plan. 2 didn't need to exist.

Anyway I do stand somewhat corrected as someone else posted there was a sign with step 2 having a '?' at one point in the episode. Always when spoken it was just completely left out.

we are talking serious comedy here right? I also find it very amusing that people don't find an overly serous analysis of a joke amusing in it's self. Perhaps I should be less subtle and just say, "fart" or "butsecks". That should simplify the humor.

I always feel the need to correct this joke. Get rid of the ??? step as part of the joke is that it doesn't exist and ruins the entire thing. By adding the ??? step it's as if you are looking for the step when the idea is that you deny it is even needed.

  9. Re:Art is more useful than touch screen machines on WV Voters Say Machines Are Switching Votes · · Score: 1

Only way for touch screen voting to be useful is for initial counts. Process as such:

    1) voter votes on touch screen which pops out a card with his/her votes clearly shown on the card.
    2) card gets dropped in sealed ballot box with custody chain documentation.
    3) at the end of the voting cycle the machines report the results.
    4) the losing campaign at that time can request a manual recount.

This gets both the speed of machine counted votes and the "security" of hand counted votes if requested.

I think it'd require a quite a bit more than a razor blade and a pen laser (of which were really really expensive at the time and not many people had them) to detect the problem.

Under normal circumstances a long boot time doesn't seem like it should be a big deal, but if it's a server that needs a reboot, often times, every second counts. Also, the times that a server does need to be rebooted, like when developing a new server build image it adds literally hours to the process of finalizing the server build just waiting the 7-10 minutes of POST processes that most server hardware goes through. There should be a flag within the bios that records the last time a full POST has succeeded and then not do it again for 24 hours, if requested by a prompt, or if the case had been opened assuming that hardware changed.
