  2. What Napster is going to hurt most on Jupiter Report Says Napster Users Buy MORE Music · · Score: 3

What I think napster is going to hurt most is
going to be the "one hit wonder" music industy.
This would include most movie sound tracks. If
a band puts out an album on CD that has 12-18
good tracks of music that I want to listen to
then I would purchase it. If a band puts out
an album with one song that is good and the rest
is complete crap I would much rather download that
song off of napster and never bother to get the
entire album. Napster is going to promote good
music as apose to quick buck money maker single
hit albums and movie sound tracks.

R&D gains through small improvements over time. The diffrence between open souce R&D and diffrent companies is that compaines will hold on to several hundred of those small improvements and release them all at once makeing it look like a leap forward where as in open source we release every small step forward. "Release early Release often" Unfortanately there was a lot of catch up work that needed to be done for the oss community. I think getting good working desktops together in about 2 years is preaty damn good. After Microsft takeing more than 10 years to almost catch up to Macintosh, here we catch up to both in no time.

Since the open source revolution is suppose to be a different
paradigm than what most are use to why not use a different
approach. How about a hardware incomparability certification.
This could be run open by the community with a searchable
database. This way we can point fingers and hopefully bad press
    at incomparable hardware.

Of course this could get out of hand with "my Reheat Model 3456
Microwave Oven is not linux comparable!!" But with some kind of
planing and restrictions on it I am sure it would be a very good
thing. While the amount of hardware out there is huge it is
still finite in size, and as far as incomparable stuff it is
    growing ever smaller.

I would like to see a test of scale, Lets get the most powerfull and expensive whatever box that winNT/2K will run on and the biggest one Linux will run on and then compare them. Forget same hardware. Or another good test would be to make a budget. $10k build the best hardware configuration your OS will run on. Then lets see who has the price/performance race. based on hardware alone I am sure we could build a nice sparc or alpha that would kill anything window$ could run on.

Everyone seems to want open source to take off right now. This is a nice thing to want but we end up with things like the Gnome 1.0 disaster. I love Gnome and use it as my primary desktop, but 1.0 was not stable. I hope Open Source learned a little something from this. "User friendly" will come with time, but if you try to rush it it will flop on its first try. As user base grows we will need good bug/feature request tracking software such as bugzilla to be used more often. I am not fully aware of all of bugzilla's capabilities but as I understand it it should be able to take bug reports and catagorize and prioritize them as needed. As projects like this get better people will be able to submit bug reports on user interface, program operation, feature problems, compile problems etc...

All in all, people need to have a little more patents and these things will come "When they are ready"(tm)

Many people think that the stuff they see on the internet is always on there computer. We cant really blame these people for being ignorant. I don't know every law in the US but I still have to abide by them, I don't know everything about my car but I still have to be able to drive it.

It is basicly useless to try to get everyone to know what they are doing on a computer. It is just not going to happen. The world has many more gas station attendents than it does IT personal.
