Besides, some people will stock a lot of it with such an announcement (so that will push the fab to maximum till it shuts down the production, good thing for them) and after that there will still be plenty available on the market for a while.

It could also be a ploy to check consumer's reaction and see if it's profitable in the mid term to keep that fab with these productions or not. Anyhow I wouldn't be too worried about the X86, Maybe a bit more for the new K6 line with low power, since there's not a load of them on the market... then again people might stock them in huge quantities.

Microsoft encourages the thinking and then people just do it because "Microsoft says it's secure" or "Microsoft says it's stable" and so forth.

And I guess that Linux is better in that perspective? How many times you see linux people doing the EXACT SAME THING by saying it's more secure and stable than Windows? Wouldn't that bring the exact same reaction? "I'll install a linux/apache server because it's more secure" but what if that person has the 0-patching thing in mind already? It's not FORGED by microsoft alone, that's my point... both platforms do the exact same thing on that issue.

I don't want to start a Linux Vs Windows war because it's totally useless, and I surely don't want to be seen on the M$ side :), but my point is still valid, and the one who modered that as a troll is probably another zealot who can't understand and saw his beloved platform scratched by my comments.

In the end, any OS needs patching, and people needs to be educated about it. Linux or WIndows or MAC I don't care, seeing my RD light on my modem still flashing like hell after that much time after that virus (and titles like aftermath) got announced, THAT worries me a lot.

Fact #1: the world is full of clueless morons that will open any attachement they see because they see "click". EVEN IF YOU TELL THEM NOT TO DO IT.

Fact #2: If this virus would have hit linux, or apache... people wouldn't have made such a big deal about it. Granted that Linux WWW administrator normally are more responsible towards their servers and patching it at the sign of a problem...

but what does have to do with the company itself? it's not microsoft's fault if their userbase are composed of clueless morons... Yes I can't bare the fact that *OVER ONE WEEK* later, some servers are still popping my light like if nothing was publicised.. I can't understand how people can be that selfish and ignorant, but is that microsoft's fault?? THE PATCH WAS AVAILABLE *BEFORE* this virus got out!

I don't like microsoft more than the average joe here, but what I hate even more is people bitching immaturely at every occasion they can get, making "bitching against microsoft" like a crying baby after 2 years.... you get used to it and it doesn't matter anymore... and that's not the effect it should have, now people yell on roofs "microsoft this microsoft that" and nobody listens! It's not like Linux didn't have any opened holes ever. You have to patch your linux? people have to patch their windows. Period. This virus is spreading like flu, not BECAUSE of microsoft, but because of INCOMPETENCE and cluelessness...

I mean, one simple patch, poof! no more problems. Why the heck do I still see my cable modem light flash like hell even after a WEEK that everyone knows about this thing?

See? that's a *&#@*(@& good argument for microsoft to tell the people "don't install non-certified drivers" "don't install non-ms-approved software" "don't do this and that"... people need to be wiped and taken by the hand to be shown what to do. This virus is the greatest proof that the world is full of clueless people and that's why some people won't care if their OS babysits them.

BTW, I don't like the idea of microsoft controlling everything (nor any other companies), I just say this will give them bullets to automate the patching/drivers things without your knowledge (and of course adding a couple of "justified" intrusive programs as well) Tech people always have to pay because of non-tech people, it always been like that... just like we have to pay high insurance rates because people have abused it and gave ammos to the insurance companies to f* us.

I mean. what is WinXP? it's taking a very good and successful product with good features, and put some "meat" around it to grab more marketshares. For most of us, everything new XP has to offer we know how to install the equivalent on win2k... switching from Win2k to winXP is simply an interface upgrade (which can be done also with windowsblind(?) or similar).

Question is, is there a good reason for a win2k user to upgrade (downgrade I should say) to XP? XP seems so much more restrictive WIHTOUT giving any new features that can't be match with 3rd parties software. It's not an OS for most of us who like to mess around with hardware or software and betas. It's meant for the home user that is running 98/ME and wants to upgrade, THAT guy is gonna see a shitload of improvements.

Yes there's a professionnal version as well... I know... do you really think it's gonna be a major seller? heck they didn't expect win2k to sell that much, why did it sell that much? Games support/directX, Stability, speed, dual processor support, etc... XP offers nothing new in any of these area, so the win2k userbase Won't upgrade unless they have money to burn.

Finally, that product activation thing is gonna be another major pain in the butt for them, most IT people won't tolerate that, and boycott it. (personnally I don't feel like wasting 10hrs a month waiting over the phone because something bad happened to my users and I have to reactivate each one of them one by one or for whatever other reasons).

Let's start from top: It's a messaging program, Hell ICQ grew super dooper fast in a year, and I never seen it down more than an hour or two maximum since 4 years, Server crashes can happen to the very best of us, so anyone bitching at any company going down a few hours probably doesn't know what's involved.

    BUT...

I look at a company in the server buisness, trying to take over the world, trying to squash it's competitors in every area, of course their database must be growing at a phenomenal rate, of course nothing is perfect and it can crash, but the point is, *1* Week?? how many of you people would get their balls chopped if you'd kill your mail server for more than a few hours?

That's what I find unacceptable, I love windows 2000, more than any unix flavor, but what I hate is microsoft doing something good for once, and now that they have a good codebase and something that works, they add up piles of shit only a monopoly could do, and the more useless remote control they put, the more load they get, the more things like this are bound to happen.

Now it's just a chat/messaging program, most of the MSN users run ICQ in parallel, but if one day its a Microsoft world and other more important things relies on such a system (.NET?) and the same thing happens, just imagine the consequences.

Your word license has expired and you *NEED* to make that document but you can't reset your license by the net, great, more pain in the ass, phone them to get a code, since the server is down, their lines are probably full... etc etc...

That's why I won't support windowsXP, it might be a nice product, but if people aren't sheep and realize what's happening, it'll send a message to microsoft (and they do listen, especially if the sales aren't strong and users are complaning (the 1st rather than the 2nd :) ) well they'll change their aiming.

Too bad there's no solid simple and user friendly alternative because in a few months from now there will be a really nice opening and pissed off users (just wait with all that SID key and licensing activation junk).

That's blattant piracy, bandwidth chocking and let's face it, evil. Some will argue that being evil with E-vil is good, I won't get into that argument, but if linux would be on top of the food chain and do the same thing, I'm sure most of the people whining here would put the same energy saying how good it is and how good it is to use the technology developped, not just let it sit somewhere.

Microsoft has it's flaw, heck credit cards and banks had their, I remember when people could mass-order stuff from mail-order catalogues and never get caught, that was WAY worse than my info being shared to x and y... because most of the credit card companies wouldn't take the cash hit and the buyer was left screwed. I'd take my personnal info being shared any day over being frauded (yeah I know, my info being shared could POTENTIALLY lead to me being frauded too... but still, weight the balance to some extent).
