American businesses aren't taxed on assets, they are taxed on income.
That depends on where the business is at. Last month a car dealership here in Montgomery county VA won a court case against the county. What was the dealership doing? Before the end of the fiscal year, the dealership would move their cars to another lot in the next county to avoid the inventory tax.:)
I'm really suprized that the car dealership won that case.
Yes, hardware support has been an issue for quite a while. I remember picking up a free (beta?) version of OS/2 Warp at my universities bookstore in 1995. Of course it didn't support the CD-ROM my computer had.:(
So, I ended up just passing the CD off to a friend. Who had the same problem. I've heard many good things about OS/2. I just havn't been able to get that first hand experience. Maybe I can soon!
I see I've been modded way down because of my sig.:-)
Maybe. I think the out right discounting of possibilities such as time travel to be short sighted (considering our present knowledge). Beside, you have much less credibily than Hawking:)
This makes sense. Scientific work has always been based around the open exchage of ideas. Perhaps you could say they were the original Open Source:)
While making research available in a timely way may place more work on the journals, it is not too great a burden. They get their publication material for free anyway (in most cases). I'm glad to see people forcing this issue. Having all the research available in electronic form and indexed will be more efficient.
I'd ask why their record company doesn't provide a way to pay for (at a reasonable price) and download their mp3's. I enjoy using mp3's to listen to music. Why do the record companies not provide this service that me and so many other people clearly want?
Yes, what I and many others do is theft. But DAMN it there is no legitimate way to get mp3's. Until the RIAA pull their heads out of the sand I don't feel too bad about it. (I have a very modest collection anyway.)
I have seen first hand (sadly, haven't experenced it though) how dedicated teachers positively affect children. I think this most often happens in private schools with small enrollments.
If teachers are not overwhelmed and can give personal attention to as many students as possible, this causes the children to greatly respect those teachers (devotion even).
Since a person is already downloading GAIM or someother piece of software to use IM'ing, have the user get one more piece of software; just tell the user "hey, you need to install AOL IM on a windows machine and then copy aim.exe into this config directory".
Then there is a local copy and no central person for AOL to attack. Is this feasible then?
If you can escape using MS for personal documents then Latex or Tex is the answer. The format is plain text. If you can't get Word to format a document you recieved your SOL. With Tex you can just cut and paste the text.
If a person is really interested in reading a document 10 years from now a Word format will not be used. I have backed up documents now that I can't read.
Does a writer really want to loose access to a document they have written? If you use a document format that isn't open you can count on loosing access.
The real answer is to use ASCII or some format that uses plain text. If you have read "In the Beginning..." by Neal Stephenson you know of these difficulties.
If your profession depends on what you write make sure that your documents are backed up as ASCII or someother easy to get at format. Backing up a.doc file is not a backup.
Have you seen it yet? Well, on the east coast the show just finished. I didn't think it was that bad. The show was more refreshing and tongue-in-cheek than any of the last 5 X-Files that were on.
they're really great supporting characters...
I agree. Though this first episode did flesh out the characters more. While it was necessary to suspend disbelief at many points in the show, it was fun none the less.
What I wonder is how so many people who pride themselves on being clever could simultaneously
come to pretend that restriction (of how I can use my software improvement) is freedom.
You are right it is a restriction. But you misunderstand the reason for that restriction. It sounds like you want to leech off the free software community but give nothing back.
(4) the software must therefore not call anything GPL'd.
That is not true. A program can make use of any dynamic libraries. You just can't statically link the libraries with your program.
The tech industry does not have unions in any large manner because unions would quickly destroy
several of the foundations the tech industry relies upon. The tech industry is based on knowlege and
skill. If you don't know and/or you can't do, then you are not promoted (and possibly) fired.
I think that you have a slanted view of unions. Unions do help workers. How many of your co-workers pull the weight you think they should?
I come from a coal mining family, a union job is much better than that from a truck mine.
Sure, unions have downsides just like any work enviroment. But, with a union you have some concrete asurance that you can control your work enviroment. (Who can say that tech workers won't be as numerous as mine workers in the future?)
Support unions, soon the person three blocks over will do the same thing as you; cheaper! Largely, I
support unions. The Heads of unions do underhanded things, which is why a union head should be an plain worker. But, damnit workers need corperate representantion.
Sorry, for the rant. My father is a coal miner and I know that for a common worker you can be replaced, with common labor, without reason . In 20 years IT workers will have much the same job. That of a common worker.
Well, I have. I really miss that a C/C++ compiler isn't installed. WSH is a half baked scripting language, give me plain sh any day.
I find it to be incredibly stable and usable.
W2000 is stable. It just doesn't have that many features. It doesn't have emacs or vi. Where is LaTex? Even if you don't use these tools, there is nothing in a base install to do work with. Unless you want browse the web...
Sure Win2K is stable. But, until it comes with the software I use, it's worth nothing (not even the money I paid for it).
In case you missed my point: I want a system where I can control it using the shell language. I want a compiler so I can use the system/OS.
let's say you have a function that gets passed a region of malloc()'ed memory. You want
to know exactly how much memory you have to play with. That number is stored somewhere before
the beginning of that pointer. malloc() allocates a little extra memory, writes some status info at the
beginning, sticks the pointer in front of that, and returns the address to you. However, exactly where
and what it writes are somewhat unspecified.
Um, you really don't ever want to do that. The right (portable) way is to pass both a pointer to the malloc'ed area and its size to your function. What you discribe above can break from one version of libc to the next. Not to mention cause undefined behaivor (according to the ISO standard) and additionly may cause demons to fly out of your nose!
If this was posted on comp.lang.c you would quickly be flamed until you saw the error of your ways;^)

What the *hell*? Educate, from sites that are pro-drug? Talk about propaganda.
It is better than what you hear else where. If you don't examine other news sources other than the 6pm news, you know nothing.
It is that simple. Please don't follow those links so that I can simply call you a bigot and ignore you.
I really hope that many people go to see this movie. I especially hope that lots of average Joe's go to see this movie. Too many people never give a second thought with respect to the War on (some) Drugs.
Sadly, this issue was hardly even discussed in this years US election. Even if you watch the nightly news you know nothing about the Wo(s)D's. You don't hear about the people killed by officers busting into the wrong house. You most likely didn't hear about the pit of 100+ dead bodies found just over the border in Mexico. If you want to know more you should go and read back issues of DRCNet's newsletter.
Lastly, support of the War on Drugs is tact support for the mob and cartels. Remember what prohibition does folks. This lesson should have been learned during the 1930's. It isn't a War on Drugs, it is a War on Personal Freemdom. Remember that at all times please.
More than likely it wasn't submitted as a patent by Juno because it is obvious. Why should a company waste time with patents for things which are not innovations? "Because someother company may patent this obvious idea" isn't a good excuse.
Sorry, but stuping to the level of fools is no reason to do anything. What needs to happen is that fools submitting obvious patents get rejected, quickly.
It is a clear extention from displaying an ad on a website to displaying an ad from an ISP. There is NO innovation here. Does changing the context of the use of a tool constitute innovation? No. Using a hammer to kill the patent officer of Netzero instead of sinking nails isn't innovation.
And the folks on CNN wonder why tech stocks went bad...
is my suggestion to anyone beginning to us any unix. Too often, I find users unwilling to read available documentation. Sure, some docs are not that great. If you encounter bad docs drop them and find something new.
Constant learning and reading is necessary to use advanced features of any OS. Getting started using an OS requires reading. As questions of others. If someone suggests some reference to read, do read it. Then come back and get anything clarified.
Two of the most useful newbie commands are man and locate/updatedb. Locate is best used to find the location of that obscure config file.
I don't know if any ISO's exist or not. The great thing about NetBSD is that an ISO isn't necessary.
Just download the packages you need. Make a boot disk. Burn the packages you want or do a ftp install.
What? You need more than 600Mb of software!?:)
I've always ordered CD's from cheapbytes.com but they are often behind on the newer Net and FreeBSD releases. So do net install (or download the packages first) is very much necessary.
Well that is the problem. The politicians will only be sated for a time.
Appeasement only works for a time. We don't want a short rest from being bagered by politicians, but an eternity. C.S. Lewis has a quote that I hold dear and illistrates this problem:
"Of all tyrannies a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good
of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better
to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral
busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep,
his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who
torment us for own good will torment us without end, for they
do so with the approval of their own conscience." --C.S. Lewis.
Let us assume that only harmful drugs are illegal. Alcohol and tobacco kill a larger precentage of their users than any other drug. Yet they are legal. Every single illegal drug is safer than alcohol or tobacco.
Hypocrite. Announce your true intentions or just leave everyone alone.
It's so depressing to see all of these "pot is OK and should be legalized" posts. The distinction drawn by law is more than abitrary and moral, it's a practical concern as well.
No your wrong. It is very much arbitrary. If the illegal/legal desision wasn't arbitrary then both tobacco and alcohol would be illegal. They are both more damaging than any other drug.
If it's illegal, you don't know
what you have got! There's nothing casual about that.
And that is a problem of the drug!? No, prohibition causes the appearance of impure drugs. Do you not remember the lessons of alcohol prohibiton? Forget history and you repeat it.
Really! Do you not think out your opinions? Are all prohibitionist so dumb? I think so.

Well, that was the root of the problem. Damn IBM! :^) That 486 Valuepoint is still running though, at least IBM makes good hardware.
So, I ended up just passing the CD off to a friend. Who had the same problem. I've heard many good things about OS/2. I just havn't been able to get that first hand experience. Maybe I can soon!
What are you trying to say? Popper was a philosopher, Hawking an astro-physicist. Come on, your going off on some sort of tangent.
Maybe. I think the out right discounting of possibilities such as time travel to be short sighted (considering our present knowledge). Beside, you have much less credibily than Hawking :)

If anyone thinks that managing compiled tar balls it difficult, well encap is a must have tool.
Basically, just do this for any source install:
$ ./configure --prefix=/usr/local/encap/xxx-1.2.3
$ make
$ sudo sh
# make install
# cd /usr/local/encap
# epkg -i xxx.1.2.3
Thats it! And the package is in a central location and can be easly removed or updated using epkg.
