It's us who won't let Steamboat Willie enter the public domain almost a century after it was created, not them. They understood reasonable copyright terms.

For the work I do, Windows has always been looked past because it couldn't get out of it's own way when running high-performance or near real time code. It will never do actual real time (Microsoft could make that, but it wouldn't be called Windows), but why has this "Ultra Extreme Actually Fast" mode been so impossible in the past?

You are forgetting that roads are also heavily subsidized. So, each time you drive to work you are taking money from a neighbor who cycles, or walks, to work.

Conversely, the very existence of a good road network, transportation technology, fueling network, and so forth could be seen as being "subsidized" by private motoring culture.

I'm rather glad that paramedics don't have to take a train to come get me. For one thing. Would fancy motorized ambulances exist, if private motoring had never happened?

Also, would motorized buses even exist, without private motoring? How much public transport as we know it today would even be possible, without us private drivers?

  15. moat on AMP For Email Is a Terrible Idea (techcrunch.com) · · Score: 2

While I completely agree that email is good as it is and this is a monstrosity, I'm not so sure I agree there is a "moat" between email and applications.

Applications send email all the time. Email with links/buttons, which when clicked, interact with the applications. It's pretty cool, actually. So there's all kinds of interaction going on.

But - it's cool because it works with the limited tool set that email already has.

So maybe there is a moat - with a wide, comfortable drawbridge, but I agree that doesn't mean that we should drain the moat and fill it in with concrete.
