My experience , from a users point of view, is that passwords are never secure because the user has to remember them.
The user has to choose a password that is easy to remember or write it down both of which mean the password becomes insecure.
To the poster (cant find your message now) who suggested an RSA key, this is a key-ring size lcd with a number that changes every 60 seconds, they are brillant and in combination with a password would be tough to beat.
The problem with one site charging an access fee and another not charging is that no one will pay when they can get something similar for free. Unless more sites or at least a critical mass work together, any charging plans won't work. The fact that everyone knows this purposed charging model won't work by itself indicates to me that there is more than likely some collusion going on with other major news players and we will hear similar announcements from others soon as well....
Collusion would not surprise me after all this is Murdoch we're talking about here. (ie. The Anti-Christ)
He is not is dumb and he has some the smartest people in the media business advising him.
I've never been to the UK but over the years I've read no small number of stories coming from across the pond that just leave me shaking my head: the ever-present cameras, the citizen databases, the monitoring and surveillance, etc. How are the good folks in the UK not in the streets about all this? Maybe I'm wrong -- in fact I hope that I am -- but the UK seems to be barreling down the road to Big Brother. To see a Western nation going down this path truly disturbs me.
Having done 1000+ upgrades to Macs, and 500+ to Windows, I'd say you're so dead wrong that you're drunk and confused.
nope but I have been on the receiving end of upgrades gone wrong and in the customer's mind you suddenly become the person who caused it. Nasty
Please please backup - (beg even.)
1000+ upgrades to macs and 500+ windows (you dont say it but I imply that you mean you have never had a problem)
yeah well.... you are the luckiest/most skilled? IT person I have ever met.
The real issue with upgrades is that your dealing with a moving target software wise and the people who made the OS upgrade may not always anticipate how software changes.
drunk and confused ? - Interesting and how will this win your argument ?
The only problem I see with this is that if you ever HAVE to reinstall your OS, then you have to waste time installing four different operating systems. And not lose any cd keys. And have the CDs on hand. It seems like a lot more work than having one XP disc and key.
no thats not the issue, there are always ways around this.
The issue that this person will have is that the drivers for their scanner , printer, (insert legacy device) are not made for the new operating system.
Xp was good in that you could use drivers from previous windows OS.
Slashdot he is dead the media is flooded with details about his life to the tiniest detail. Why do you feel the need to add to it ?
Sure I felt sorrow after I heard he "kicked the bucket" but that was 24 hours ago.
Best we can hope for is he went to a better place. If there is a heaven maybe he went there , if the stories about him and little boys are true maybe he went to the other place.
1) Backup - make sure everything is backed up. 2) Maintain the legacy system - That means finding who knows how to program / maintain it and pay them to train people. 3) Find a Company / Organization that has similar needs and has changed to a new system. Who makes there software? 4) Contact that software company. Get them to design a new system. (They have a proven track record)
this is civil law which means its about money and with civil law you can keep appealing (with grounds of course) till someone runs out of money/gives up.
The harms of a little radioactivity has been greatly exaggerated. I wouldn't want to be around the A-bomb (or its fall-out), but there are so many things in nature that are radioactive, that I doubt contents of a single nuclear reactor, dispersed through the ocean, would cause any noticeable harm.
.....................
But as far as a single disastrous incident goes, dirty bomb's most destructive effect would be the explosive aspect of it, not the radioactive material in it.
I don't doubt the contents of nuclear reactor can be used to kill a few even tens of people. But, for ecological disasters, I would still stick with oil tankers. Even the most harmful radioactive material did come from nature. The real harm is in the vast quantity we can accumulate these things in one place, and this vast quantity is what a nuclear reactor should lack.
nuclear reactors and water can be a very dangerous combination if the core goes into meltdown and this melted core hits water you can have a steam explosion.
ie. this is what happened in Chernobyl except most of the melted core stayed in the reactor vessel.
You do know that Chernobyl has an exclusion zone of 30 kilometers around the site?
It will be hundreds of years before people will be able to live there again.

Yeah. Anything in "excess" is probably bad for you! However, if you smoke too much pot (I quit 25 years ago), all you do is fall asleep. You would need a ton of pure THC to kill yourself. Smoking it might result in terminal munchies, but it won't kill you by itself!:-)
Just a note of caution (drugs always have side effects) Pot for some people has been linked to schizophrenia
I don't know about the getting copies part, but Sanasto Ry was founded three years ago and the first thing they did was ask money from libraries. Finnish article from 2006.......
wow!!!
I checked it out in Australia if there is more than 50 copies of your book in a public library you get payed. Its called public lending right.
Libraries don't just buy any book in a book shop. They have specially licensed copies. They also pay various copyright associations for lending out their books.
It's similar to how the dvd's that you buy in a shop or on Amazon contain a notice that forbids renting, public performance etc.
Copyright laws do allow the owners of the exploitation rights of copyrighted works to lay down such restrictions, and to hand out different kinds of licenses to different people/organisations......................
um can you provide evidence of this for books ?
I know that this is the case with dvd's that you rent from a store but not with books.
............... Politicians as they always are, care about the next campaign, and almighty money. So they would say to the public that terrorists used libraries to steal ideas for making bombs, and so libraries must be closed or terrorists would take over the world.
dude quiet , you might give the politicians ideas.
if you really think about libraries have terror potential........
It seems to me that "copyright" refers, in the most straightforward way possible, to the "right to copy.".........No copy, no outrage.
But the lawyers are getting paid, so as usual they will entertain the self-serving legal theories of their clients with dignity and care until such time as they lose or go broke.
Thats the core of the story "lawyers are getting paid" and pure greed on the part of the publishers.

i.e so powerful that they decide what the market will do.

All the Macintosh users are gloating, since upgrades, and migrating to new machines seems to be always flawless and painless.
funny - tell me your joking
Upgrades on mac are just as nightmarish .
Love apple products but if you ever have the choice never upgrade.
Always backup Please !!!
you will be doing the person who has to fix the issues caused by the upgrade a favor and your data is protected. (like safe sex)
Rose tinted spectacles? XP was as bad for getting old drives working as Vista is.
okay it did not always work.
With the first version of XP (pre service pack 1) if a driver was not available in XP I usually could install the windows 98 driver.
The only problem I see with this is that if you ever HAVE to reinstall your OS, then you have to waste time installing four different operating systems. And not lose any cd keys. And have the CDs on hand. It seems like a lot more work than having one XP disc and key.

Why not put yourself out of your misery and upgrade to Mac OS X?
FUCK NO !!!
NEVER EVER UPGRADE MAC OS X.
http://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-9806005-37.html
BACKUP - backup then backup again.
clean install new version of mac os x
then use transition assistant.
Christ don't give me nightmares.
In my experience Upgrade BAD.
The number of calls I would get because an upgrade went south. (I just used to cringe , users would never have a backup)
A CLEAN INSTALL is always the best.
You mean I can have windows without all the security issues of internet explorer?
http://www.nwnetworks.com/iesecurity.htm
Just have to do a clean install?
Yes Please.
Anybody got friends in Europe ?

Heres the steps I would take.
1) Backup - make sure everything is backed up.

Thanks for the link to Nineteen Eighty Four. I didn't realise what Orwellian meant before reading that article.
Oh, and even though TFA is only talking about England, UK != just Britain, either.
You got me did not notice the mistake . The reason I put uk in there is that the dna database is called UK_National_DNA_Database. (also I forgot the link)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UK_National_DNA_Database.
I did not think britain could get more Orwellian with CCTV and a DNA register of all people arrested in the UK.

This just says I was wrong.
So now Britain is getting ready, making sure the kids (i.e "the devils spawn") are on file.
Are Britian's leaders so scared of its people that they see them as criminals?
What happened to Free speech , Democracy , Innocent till Proven Guilty ?
Innocent until proven guilty.
thats criminal law

When I worked in a hospital records department the computer systems for keeping records digitally were available.
I asked the boss why the hospital has not bought a system and was told "the doctors like to use paper and would not use the computers".
