I meant to say "successful LARGE-SCALE attack". Was too early in the morning, and was pre-caffeine :( forgive me. But after reading through comments (and now functioning at more than 0.3% brain power), I see some very good points raised. More importantly, how a successful attack may not necessarily just have to do with damage and loss of life, but more how well it rattles our sense of security, as you said.

However, I still argue there has been no significant terrorist "attack" anywhere near the scale of 9/11. Whether that means these agencies have been doing their job or not is really impossible to say. This is /. and causation != correlation, almost ever.

I honestly can't stand these people who go out and attempt to provoke situations. Yes, there are bad cops out there who certainly abuse their position of power and deserve to be outed. But this is just ridiculous. The guy is trying to stir up shit, and I have to commend the cops for putting up with that and not even blinking an eye.

  5. Re:Change channel / Try Kismet on Tracking Down Wi-Fi Interference? · · Score: 1

Using any channel other than 1, 6, or 11 could increase your chances of interference. You will notice that in most corporate settings, those three channels are used as there is no overlap between them. For a visual understanding of that, see this link.

Placing your friend on channel 9 may have helped mostly because it stayed away from channel 1, where you said the majority of 'strong' networks were--but you were still susceptible to interference from channels 6 and 11.

Who says all the sensitive information is connected to the internet? I work for the Army as a civilian, and I can tell you that the majority of sensitive (read: classified) information is transmitted and stored on separate, secure networks. This isn't Hollywood people: you can't go to www.army.mil and hack your way through to a super secret server in an undisclosed location, it doesn't work that way.

No, the real threat of cyberwarfare (at least where I work), is the notion that someone will be compromised (knowingly or otherwise) that has access to sensitive information. Even then, it would be hard to use their credentials to get onto a secure network unless it was done at a terminal physically connected to said network.

I think it was just the sheer fact that he reached such a tremendous altitude with the equipment (and how well it all worked all things considered). Honestly it was probably some engineer at NASA that saw this and thought "damn that's pretty cool, I should talk to this guy about it" and nothing more than that really.

What I mean stems from this: "On April 15, the US Treasury will be required by law to issue a report naming countries deemed to be “currency manipulators.”".

If the report names China as a currency manipulator that creates vast trade deficits to benefit their economy (which, for all intents and purposes, they are), you can bet the Chinese government will lash out and claim we are protecting and siding with our corporations.

Seems like the Chinese government may be winning here. They clearly are great at enticing (forcing?) a sense of nationalism and pride in their people. Amazing how quickly some are turning on Google as if this is entirely their own fault and doing. Now we wait to see if the US Government tries to step in...oh what a show this is becoming.

  15. Are you kidding me? on Later School Start For Teenagers Brings Drop In Absenteeism · · Score: 2, Insightful

These kids need to get over it. I'm only 6 years removed from high school now, but back then 1st period started at 7:10am and I'm pretty sure that hasn't changed since I graduated. And TFA is talking about 10am? Wow.

Guess what? If you move the start time back an hour or two, the kids will just start to take up an hour or two later. Nothing will change. I didn't RTFA, but I can almost guarantee that if they left this "start later" system in place long enough, they'd see absenteeism rise back to 'normal' levels anyways.
