Uhh, excuse me, it's Linux. It's pretty common for commercial ports for Linux to be a version or more behind. The most recent example I saw that made me laugh was AOL Instant Messenger. Interface looks straight out of Windows 3.1. Check out the version numbers for the multiple Linux versions.

It's also entirely possible this was a bug in the Airfoil software, which while a Windows port is available, remains a mac centric product.
The default format is the "Live File System", which is a nice option but isn't comparable with machines prior to Visa. This can be changed by clicking the "formatting options' button beneath the disk title input field, which is the very first step.
Vista's integrated CD burning is no more difficult than it was on XP, assuming you have used either one at all.

OS X (and other BSD based OS) and Linux are based on different design principles and mostly immune to viruses.
