There's a reason eating well and exercising -- even just a half mile walk a day to and from the bus stop -- are so very important!
I can testify to that. I stoped my half mile walk to bus each day and gained 5 pounds in 2 months. So I cut back 150-200 calories a day and started doing pushups. Acciendly ended up under goal weight again and am having a pain of a time trying to get back up to goal. We can't win them all.
Is that the same Circuit City that decided that it didn't need its most experienced personnel and decided to can them? The Circuit City that a lot of slashdoters and people who don't like the way corporate America treats its staff?
IAAAA (I Am An ASCII Artist)
If brightness of characters is effecting the image then it isn't ASCII, it is ANSI or any number of other things but it isn't ASCII. In ASCII all characters are the same weight.
If ASCII allowed one to use changing character brightness I wouldn't have spent so much time creating all of these because some of the challenge would have been lost.
You are talking about their capability to use and understand. The GGP and myself were talking about feeling good that the icon was there was good enough for most parents which was what my examples showed. Two different topics, trust vs knowledge. Both valid, but your response to me doesn't address the issues that we were addressing.
I am so happy to see that you used that old fallacy to respond there
instead of looking at the real issue he was bringing up. After all a
person who has no kids is completely incapable of knowing how parents
think. Their life experience is completely devoid of any contact with
parents or kids so they can't possibly know how things work.
The truth is that most parents will be content just knowing that the
icon is there. Just like they make sure a TV has a V-chip but never
set it up. They buy anti-virus software and never run it and won't
put it on a scheduler because they don't like it to run when they are
on the computer. They buy cell phones for their kids so that they can
call them to find out were they are or what they are doing but then
never call them just to check in. Or, as has been mentioned here on/. they get one of those GPS cellphones that tell parents were their
kids are but then never use the feature after the initial test to see
if it works. A lot of these examples are like buying a DVD so you can
watch something any time you want. But you never watch it because you
always see it on the shelf and know you can watch it any time you want
so why watch it now? People, parents included, often take the easy
way out and trust that if something is visible then it is doing its
job.
People are stupid. Parents are people. Parents are stupid. Sure
that is broad statement and there are plenty of examples to the
contrary but people as a whole are burdened with a lot of evolutionary
baggage that makes them smart enough to know they should do something
and lazy enough to put it off for another time. Checking the logs
from the Internet filter is one of those things that never gets done
by the majority of parents. Assuming that the parents didn't have the
kids set it up in the first place.
This isn't as unique as the article makes it out to be. Male dolphins will frequently try to molest humans. If they had opposable thumbs, or even arms for that matter, they would probably sexually harass humans too.
This addresses the first part of your comment because by the second part you are singing a very different tune.
It isn't that farmers are stupid. It is that the corps are smarter.
Imagin were you won't qualify for farm subsidies unless you grow GM crops. It wouldn't take much politicing to make it s you can't get an WHO loan unless you use GM crops. Having a few bad yearr with bugs/weeds? Well just plant our product and that problem will go away. Want your crops to grow up big and strong so they can compete with factory farms? Buy our product. Buy one seed, get two free. Limited time only offer.
The farmers are out to grow food. The corperations are out there to use every trick in the book, even greasing the palms of law makers and NGOs like WHO and IMF, to increase the number using their product. If they can mandate it then it makes their job even easier. No farmer, even the best farmer lobbiest, can compete with the political ruthlessness of a good corp lobbiest. And since the game was already played and lost in the early 90s the current set up is that the farmers must now react to the corperations instead of having the corperations react to them.
Worst case situation: The lawyer that they hire to take this to court gets their assets taken as well because the suit is destablizing the recovery in Iraq by consuming government resources.
Now the lawyer doesn't have the means to ever see it get to the supreme court.
You can't scale barbie to 'the size of an avarage adult female' without still running into the problem of her being insainly proportioned. From wikipedia A standard Barbie doll is 11.5 inches tall, giving a height of 5 feet 9 inches at 1/6 scale. Barbie's vital statistics have been estimated at 36 inches (chest), 18 inches (waist) and 33 inches (hips). According to research by the University Central Hospital in Helsinki, Finland, she would lack the 17 to 22 percent body fat required for a woman to menstruate.[10] In 1965 Slumber Party Barbie came with a book entitled How to Lose Weight which advised: "Don't eat." The doll also came with pink bathroom scales reading 110lb, which would be around 35lbs underweight for a woman 5 feet 9 inches tall. In 1997 Barbie's body mold was redesigned and given a wider waist, with Mattel saying that this would make the doll better suited to contemporary fashion designs. [11] Here is more complete list of her stats.
The world's largest science experiment Who writes stuff like that? It might be the worlds largest or most expensive particle phisics experiment but I would have to count making it to the moon as the largest over all hard science experiment and or for political science maybe the reintroduction of democracy 2000 years after the last time it failed on a large level might be bigger than this.
Do they mean largest as in 'largest amount of data every to come from one single test?' Because that isn't what they said.
What I said is that human ears are as sensitive to intensity as they can ever get.
You said no such thing. Grep the whole thread prior to this and you will note that the statement above is the first time you have used the string "intensity" so you couldn't have said it before.
And how sensitive is that? Think of a deep, very quiet cave. Three living beings are inside. One of them has saber teeth.
I think you are too married to your idea to see that even though took the effort to mention that humans started using other means of surviving that didn't rely on super fine hearing you insisted on ignoring that. One of the people in the cave spent the day before keeping an eye on the cave and seeing if anything went in or out that could harm them. The other one brought the human tool of fire to light their way. They both brought spears just in case.
Human hearing is actually pretty mediocre compared to a lot of animals Care to cite sources for that affirmation?
Do you want to know how I can tell you are so biased that you wouldn't read a source I suppied? Because you didn't read the source I supplied. Go to my reply and click on the part that says --More--
Our hearing sense is comparable to that of dogs,
Yet more proof you didn't check the source I linked to. Check the table on that page and you will see that dog is listed right under human it shows that dogs have twice the range we do.
Human hearing evolved to be as sensitive as it physically could be.
This is incorrect. Human hearing evolved to be as sensitive as it needed to be. Evolution does not gear toward perfection but toward good enough.
There are many animals out there that have the same basic sound set-up we do but hear much better because their survivability depends on it to find food or avoid being food. Human hearing is actually pretty mediocre compared to a lot of animals. We have found other ways to accomplish what some species use hearing to do because we just don't need the range that some species do.
I was actually thinking this would be called Stasi@home.
But then I started thinking about it. This would not be a good distributed project. There are some things that might be better off not in the hands of joe and jane q public. Most of the Stasi stuff info was useless but there could be real information in there which 18 years later. Slim chance but still a chance.
I have long wondered why Dune wasn't lit. I started asking questions about how a book becomes lit and the best answer I found was "If Penguin publishes it it is lit."
So all we have to do is wait for them to publish Dune for this great injustice to be corrected.
Those aren't tubes. Those are ducts. Every time I am in a store and I look up and see their ducts I keep thinking of the commercial that is in the movie for decrotive ducts.
When I was picking the music to use for a crap geekcast I was am doing I
was asked "Don't you want to use nerd core?" I gave the guy a dirty look even though I subscribe to a Nerdcore Podcast.
It is a good novelty but I just can't take it seriously. I have seen serious and funny nerdcore but I haven't seen any nerdcore that hits like Nirvana, NWA, Artie Shaw or even Neil Diamond. Maybe one day but not yet.
"What we need is a cognitive approach with search material retreated and presented in some context relative to our current end-objectives
at the time."
This is off topic, not trolling:
I think we should fire anyone who talks like that. What ever happend to the days when someone could say "If only we could have data presented to us based on our goals." I am not even really sure that is what he meant.
If they realy wanted to make an efficant phone keypad they would put a morse code button on the phone. I don't know morse code but if I had a button where I could type without even looking at the keypad I would learn it and use it.
Thanks for saying that. We bought the first two seasons of House M.D. on DVD. On thing I keep noticing is that these doctors have to read a lot. You don't see it on the show but you know it is going on in the background or they wouldn't be able to spout off a whole lot of conditions related to symptoms.
I keep thinking there should be a program with every symptom know to man. Start going through the checklist and it starts giving you possible conditions with error bars for symptoms that may not have started yet and the probibilty of things that might be asymptomatic. There might be but I haven't seen it.
Anyway medical stuff is about knowing first and thinking second.
While I agree in theory with what you are saying there is one nit I must pick. When a post is closed to new comments and archived the -1 and (i think) 0 post are not saved.
So while you are correct in short term you are wrong in long term.
But with meta-moderation and and all that the censorship is self-selecting, we are deciding what stays and what goes. Information wants to be free but it also wants to be ignorant of "can you imagine a flurby cluster of those" posts.
I remember in 2000 when some people in alt.hackers.malicious broke into the NAMBLA.org server. After trashing the place they grabbed the mailboxs and sent it off to the FBI and CPS. The email response from CPS was to the effect of
Hacking is bad. Mmmkay Child porn is bad. Mmmkay But if you are going to hack NAMBLA again please let us know! Thanks!
alt.hackers.malicious has had a long history of bringing down pedo sites and with some great detective work by Vampi even helped track down a indavidual who is now serving time.
The best perk of hunting down pedo sites is that no one is going to go to the FBI and say "Excusme me Agent Smith? Yes I was wondering if I could talk to you about filing charges against the people who cracked my child porn site".
In nethack females who polymorph into egg laying creaturs can lay eggs. Males can't. That is a big enough advantage to make men play females in nethack.
