Maybe it's not to warn us of noxious substances, but to help us expel them once inhaled. If you're in a smoke-filled environment, being able to gulp down larger amounts of smoke-filed air won't help, but if you've just escaped from one, having the passages open to suck ion clean air and expel smoky air might give you an advantage - might keep you ahead of a forest fire by helping you recover faster and run faster...

  9. Re:"Intellectual property" on Baumgartner's Daredevil Parachute Jump From Space Put On Hold · · Score: 1

Presumably, as the links suggest, the guy had done a little more planning than just the basic idea. As this is mainly being pitched as a publicity stunt (albeit one from which some interesting scientific studies may result), I guess we're looking at something more analogous to presenting a planned advertising campaign to a company, having it rejected and then finding that the company is running the same campaign idea with another advertising agency. As to how advanced and detailed his plans were, I guess we'll have to see when/if the case comes to court. If it was just a simple idea, then it probably won't go far.

I'm not sure what's sadder. A backwoods pastor trying to provoke a reaction by book burning or the international media giving the idiot so much free airtime and so many free column inches. I bet the guy has never felt so important. If I were a cynical sort, I would think the media is devoting so much time to this subject purely to provoke a reaction from certain groups in order to have something explosive to report and moralise on. After all, nothing sells newspapers like violence and bloodshed...

  19. Immercenary on the 3DO on The Best Video Games On Awful Systems · · Score: 1

Immercenary was a cross between a first person shooter and a RPG as you had to build up stats by defeating weaker opponents and absorbing their powers until you were strong enough to take on a boss character. Defeat them and you got a big stats boost and could take on higher level enemies until the confrontation with the big boss, Perfect. It had a great atmosphere and each time you ventured out into the "Garden" (the battleground) you were never sure if you'd be attacked by a stronger character and have to make a run back to sanctuary. Had the feel of a MMPORG about it too. Probably the first game I played until I defeated it.

  25. Re:Concrete roads are shit on Concrete That Purifies the Air · · Score: 1

    Luckily FTFA:

"The air-purifying concrete contains titanium dioxide, a photocatalytic material that removes the nitrogen oxides from the air and converts them into harmless nitrate with the aid of sunlight. The nitrate is then rinsed away by rain."

"For roads where an asphalt surface is preferred the air-purifying concrete can be mixed with open asphalt,"

Guess it won't be as good in very dry climates though unless they actively wash the .roads.

And I'm not convinced that "nitrates" is harmless to humans and animals, especially if you're washing it into the water systems.
