My assumption was that the destruction of so many ships created a situation where battlefield promotions of young officers who had proven themselves would be possible.

It's not without precedent in US military history:

BTW, I liked it, and was a big fan of the series, but it still was a bit of a letdown. One of the joys of the series was the way that Whedon was able to let some of the plot lines develop slowly. In the movie, it ends up feeling rushed by comparison.

  14. Different allegory from the original on New Battlestar Galactica - Worth a Series? · · Score: 3, Insightful

I'm surprised more discussion hasn't concerned the differences between the allegories of the old show and the new one.

The original came from writers who were mixing the experiences of WWII (pre-war II pacifism, Pearl Harbor, the Holocaust) with Cold War fears about preparedness and the threat of an "evil empire." (the cylons served much the same purpose as the original Klingons in the original Star Trek - stand-ins for the Communist threat)

The new series has a completely different set of themes - civilian authority over the military, over-reliance on technology, etc.

For me, it works. The writers were smart enough to use the old show as a launching point with dealing with contemporary issues.

Project Gutenberg provides a lot of out-of-copyright texts for free, and is a great resource for the student doing the kind of research that you are talking about. If I was doing a term paper on Hamlet, having the etext available would be very valuable. In this scenario, as long as the boxes are dedicated for the purpose of displaying digital video I'm sure they can figure out how to overcome any bugs that come up.
