I love how Apple fans attempt to give credit to the company for just about anything. This shift towards services has been years in the making. The initiative to license 20 distributors would have taken place long before anyone caught wind of the proposed Apple deal.
Obviously you don't run windows apps too often if you think 13 mb is bloated I suggest you take a look at the outlook install on your windows machine. Even evolution has an installer of 8 megs and doesn't even share calendars. If you bothered take a closer look at the website you would find that:
The installer includes a cross platform windowing toolkit and python.
Outlook would probably be the second most used app. I wasn't stating that powerpoint is #2, i was just saying users who just use word and powerpoint should consider moving to OO. I'm not a spreadsheet power user, but from the various comments I've seen OO's spreadsheet is not up to snuff.
I've exported from OO to ppt several times without a problem. I think this kid was just using it as a creative excuse. I actually like OO Impress a lot better than PPT. The ability to export your presentation to flash in 1.1 beta is real cool. I also like the html export better too. The best part about impress is you can import any PPT template so your not stuck using templates only designed for OO.
To OpenOffice.org(No Reg Required). Openoffice is now to the point where it is more than adequate for 90% of MS Office users, especially those who just use word and powerpoint. For the other 10%, just keep using MS Office.
When 90% of journalists working for a 24 cable news channel voted liberal in the previous 3 elections
First of all, where did you get this BS stat from? Secondly, there is no "liberal" party? Third, the idea with journalism is that your views do not affect the delivery of news except for cheesy commentary shows like what you see on foxnews. Fourth, you will find that the more education a group of people are, the more likely they are to have tendebcy towards liberal views, this is true of many moderate republicans like myself. So in a profession that requires a college degree.
So who decides what is a religion and what is a cult? The problem with having voluntary activities is that if Billy Joe Bob wants to have a chrisitan prayer group, I should be allowed to have a devil worshiping group. Do you think any school, especially ones who would have prayer groups, would let me hold a devil worshiping group?
That's interesting, but there are about a 100 articles that say otherwise, here was my reply:
Hello Alex,
Thank you for contacting Intel(R) Technical Support.
Linux will run on any IA based PC. Intel(R) Centrino(Tm) Mobile Technology-based systems include integrated 802.11b wireless LAN capability, requiring particular drivers which currently do not run on Linux.
For additional information, please reply and we will try to assist you further.

As the "computer guy" for my family I recommended a few relatives buy Deskjet 722c's about 5 years ago. Of the seven purchased, all seven are still working today. These are heavy print use people too, the type that print pages to surf the web. I also still have a 550c from 1992 that works fine.
I recently purchased a combo psc 2210 that was doa, Amazon also said they never received the printer. They asked me for a tracking number and I said that their method of free return 3rd class mail, does not use tracking numbers. I guess amazon claims to offer free returns but if you want to use a tracking number, you need to pay for it. After 15 calls, one of the geniuses in customer service finally figured out that if I've bought $XXXX from amazon.com every year since it existed why would I suddenly come up with an ingenious printer scam to collect $299.
I ended up getting a 7550, it seems to work well, for now.
Don't you know the post-pc era happened 7 years ago? Isn't everyone running java thin client machines? Heck, I do all of my office work through my web browser using Corel Java Office.
This is kinda off topic but related to Intel compatibility, all the centrino branded laptops are being sold with the Intel 2100 Pro mini-pci wireless adaptor. This adaptor does not currently work on Linux. Intel has announced tentative plans to support this adaptor on Linux. The are still deciding whether or not to release it as open source or binary only. Considering the large amount of laptops being sold with the 2100 Pro adaptor, I urge anyone, to contact Intel and let them know that you would like to see an open source wireless driver for linux, as soon as possible. You can also send them an e-mail too. We don't want this to turn in to another winmodem situation.
They should worry about thier fashions instead of inventory. Seriously, the last time I remember Benetton being popular in the US was those bright logo sweatshirts from the mid-80's were everyone would roll up the sleeves, right around the members-only jacket phenomenon. I guess they are still popular in the EU?
Well considering the main consumer of this box is the "techie segment" and the fact that Tivo runs off of Linux, I wouldn't consider it vo vw much of a stetch if Tivo supported Linux for the desktop software. Why do you need to have a program at all? All I want is the tivo to read my mp3 collection stored off samba. The only way I could do this now is to have a win box, map a network drive and run the tivo software on the windows box or try wine.
When I looked at this page, the music player requires the Tivo desktop software, which you can only use on a PC or Mac. It might work with wine, but the interface doesn't look very intuitive. I will wait till the reviews come out before forking over $99 for functionality I thought was going to be included for free at a later date with my series 2 purchase and lifetime subscription.

So, the Centrino is all new, using three year old technology pioneered by Apple and using a 4 year old processor that still manages to work over our all new Pentium 4.
Since when does Apple manufacture wireless chips? Apple was one of the first of many manufactures to include built-in wireless via a mini-pci card, but they didn't do anything to pioneer wi-fi besides offering a compact base station. PC manufactures have been including built-in wireless for over 2 years now, Intel is just trying to brand something. Now if want to comment on something that Centrino is taking from Apple is the ability to powerdown just about every component of the laptop instinctively, not just the screen and the hard drive.
There may be some lemons getting invested because of WiFi but this is not a bubble or something that will affect the overall health of the market. $650 million dollars is probably equivalent to what VC's invested in online pet food stores from 98-00.
This is an alpha release so expect bugs, and don't use it unless you are willing to live with the risks inherent in such a release (ie. crashes, data loss, etc.)
IE crashes and data loss are the reason I switched to moz in the first place..
I think the company and the courts would realize that the service specs are by far the most valuable asset of the company. There is no release of an asset in to the public domain when a company is in bankruptcy, it doesn't make any sense. When a company hits chapter 7 (Chapter 7 not 11), they enter a state of liquidation, from my understanding of liquidation the idea is to distribute the proceeds from the sale of assets fairly amongst the creditors who are owed money. I'm sure those creditors are not interested in giving away assets to charity while they loose millions.
While media computers are interesting, I don't see them becoming a mainstream phenomenon anytime soon. Joe Sixpack does not want to deal with the hassle of sticking a computer next to his TV. Media Computing seems to the newest thing to hype this year, last year it was tablets, this year its media computers. The PC manufactures and hardware companies are dying to find new segments since nobody needs to upgrade to a 3GHZ PC.
Lindows so far has been all hype and no delivery. I wouldn't touch anything backed by Robertson, and I love how Lindows is on its 3rd version in less than a year.
The NYPost is not exactly known for its award winning journalism, if you need business news, I would stick to the Wall Street Journal or IBD. If your looking for news on the latest J-Lo gossip, use the NYpost.
Any made by Valve product that is "coming soon" should be viewed with a high degree of skepticism. I pre-ordered the "coming soon" TF2 addon pack for Half-Life that was supposed to arrive during the last week of November, 1998.
Microsoft is obviously under breach of contract here since it is suppose to fix all security holes till the end of the year for workstation and a year more for server, but lets consider when NT 4.0 came out, I beleive it was the fall of 1996. Around the same time redhat released version 4.0 (colgate). Is redhat still supporting 4.0 or even 6.2? If I decided to buy a Linux distro in 1996 or even 1997 was there anyone who agreed to provide security updates and paid support for eigth years?
