Frankly, between the recent 2 page fluff review of Mandrake 9.1 on Osnews and this supposed 3G review, I'm not impressed with either site. I guess their strategy is to get their half-baked articles submitted on /. to generate impressions and click-throughs. This strategy appears to be working.

The specs were only one part of the whole "Gnutella 2" debacle, which is really a misnomer since the GDF never approved the use of the Gnutella name. the registration and use of the Gnutella2 name is the biggest outrage.

For instance pretend for a second that Linus did not have the copyright for the Linux name and a coder or better yet Michael Robertson registered the domain name Linux3.com and marketed a new kernel as an official version of the Linux kernel by Linus and pushed it as the latest and greatest version of Linux.

I think once the Opteron gets out in the public and people see the advantages of AMD's new chip, MS will be forced to port windows to the new chipset. Linux will be there for release. I think the opteron's growth will be more of a slow and steady climb as people realize the performance benefits rather than a huge initial release. My biggest concern is price, not windows availability. Certainly the opteron will have many advantages and certainly be a bargain over the Itanium.

If this current situation shows anything, it is what happens to companies when they make deals with Microsoft. AMD's Chairman and former CEO Jerry Sanders agreed to testify on Bill G's behalf for the antitrust trial as long as MS ported windows to Opteron and Athlon 64.

Selling them on eBay doesn't work because usually the shipping is 3x more than the monitor itself. 21in CRT's that cost $1500 three years ago are going for under $100. I think a lot of people stayed away from purchasing ReplayTV units due to the company's financial situation. Consumers don't want to fork over $400 for a PVR when there questions as to whether the company will exist in a few months time. I think they also overestimated the market for people looking for broadband enabled PVR's. A year ago, ReplayTV's were ridiculously expensive, not many people are willing pay $1000 for a PVR. Trying to dump them on the market as a last ditch effort to get new customers just increases the speculation as to the viability of the company.

I got a powerbook from work to do some testing and I like OSX, but there is just too much cool software being developed for Linux. I was contemplating picking up a 12in powerbook as my main laptop, but one of my requirements is Sun's Java 1.4 SDK for PPC/Linux. I guess I could just run fink on top of OSX, but I would rather support free software instead of using proprietary software, even if its not as pretty.

One big reason I have not made the switch is because of a small but vocal portion of the Mac user base who are blind supporters of Apple no matter what they do. There is also a significant portion of Apple users who think they are making some kind of statement by purchasing an Apple product and quite a few of those think that choosing Apple means joining some sort of movement, which is completely ridiculous. Free software is a movement, OSS is a movement, Apple is a corporation. Think I'm wrong? Try writing a post with any hint of negativity towards Apple and -1 mods will arrive and reply's stating that product X is not "insanely great" like Mac product Y.

A few years ago hardly any motherboards came with integrated sound and those that did were of poor quality so if you were a gamer or someone who was casually in to music you had to buy a card from creative or somebody else.

Today, most motherboards come with integrated sound and most of the newer ones come with digital outs and 5.1 compatible chips. Why would anyone purchase an Audidgy 2? If your an audiophile, you know better than to touch a creative product especially after the crappy digital IO on the Live series. Speaking of the live series, the drivers are simply horrendous. Talk about bloat, I bought an Audigy for the front firewire, and the drivers are ridiculous. You can't download just a barebones driver and when you do install the full CD setup, creative tries to take over your system even if you do a minimal install.

So why should anyone purchase an Audigy 2? Especially considering that it has DRM and worst drivers I've encountered. Creative has abused their strong position in the soundcard market for too long and has failed to deliver products that meet their customers needs. Now, almost all motherboards comes with audio that is perfectly adequate for gamers and basic AV work. If you need to do anything more(audiophiles), creative is not a good choice anyway.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS provides support for workstation/desktop systems with up to two CPUs and 4GB of main memory. Designed with the desktop environment in mind, Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS does not include many server applications found in Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS and Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES.

So does this mean if I want to run a test server on my Redhat WS system, I won't find server packages on the CD? So how many flavors of Redhat are their going to be now, five? 3 Enterprise flavors, desktop, and download edition? Are they all going to use different packages? Will 8.1 download packages work on WS? So far the press releases have been really confusing, RH might want to think about clarifying what will be changed/allowed/restricted.

The big advantage of Linux is that is supposed to be cheaper and less restrictive! I realize that Redhat comes with lots of software besides the OS, but lets face it, it is free software, so your not going to convince many hobbyists that paying $250 for Redhat WS is a bargain. I realize on the enterprise level $250/machine isn't bad, but it sure as hell isn't a bargain.

Even their high-end configuration is under 1500 with built-in wireless. The biggest oversight is the lack of a firewire port. USB 2.0 is nice, but a lot of video and other media devices require firewire.

I bought a p-2000 from fujitsu last year and one odd thing is they charge sales taxes for all 50 states(I doubt they are giving that money back to the states). So expect to pay 100+ more for anything you buy from fujitsu direct.

The centrino based X31 from IBM is new release too. Thinkpads cost more but they are built like tanks and come with a 3 year warranty compared to the usual one year from many other manufactures. The X31 would be a much more attractive package with 802.11G and legacy free. Who the hell needs a parallel port on a subnotebook?
