As an owner of a PS3, an Xbox 360, and a Tivo HD, I think the Tivo solution is the most viable.

The PS3 and the Xbox are game systems that can play TV. They are not 24/7 appliances like a DVR. A Tivo is on all the time, and everyone I know is familiar with how to use it.

If you're not a gamer, you will not be purchasing a game system to watch online Movies.

I tried out the Netflix player on my Tivo HD last night. The picture was very clear on my HDTV, and the sound was pretty good. People want to complain about the selection, but they do have a lot of TV series available for instant viewing. I like the Tivo interface better than the Xbox 360 application. Overall, I'm very impressed, its yet another reason why Tivo is still the best DVR option available.

RMS took his arguments a bit far by singling out consumer apps, but "cloud computing" in general is the most overhyped technology. First off, its not even a new concept, and secondly its really just another spin on outsourcing. Like any form of outsourcing, there are big costs associated with cloud computing, that the pushers tend to glare over. Sure, its great for some poor web 2.0 startup, but its not an option for companies that actually depend on latency and uptime, or happen to truely care about their data.

Want to have a good laugh, do a Slashdot search for Lindows.. The original pitch was that it would be a Linux distribution that could run Window's applications just as easily as Linux applications. Most people here recognized that it was, b.s. from the getgo, since the technical challenges of doing such a distribution were much greater than Lindow's developer resources. Plus, the Lindows CEO Michael Robertson was more of a "pitch guy" than someone who actually knows how to deliver a robust software product.

I've executed many whois domain searches in the past, only to find the domain I looked at registered the next day. There are a few ways to avoid this problem:
    • Register a domain as soon as you search for it
    • Avoid using registry based WHOIS tools.
The ICANN requirements for becoming a registrar are VERY weak. There are a lot of disreputable operations out there who could be colluding with domain prospectors. Even with the bigger registry operations, its still possible for people to get access to the whois queries. You have no idea what that web whois box is actually querying, and there is no privacy guarantee.
