"If you allow people to record your concerts, it is not musical piracy. Gasp! It's giving something to the fans."
- no! That's piracy - a free t-shirt or ltd. edition cd or keychain upon admission to a concert would be giving something to the fans. The taping of a live performance of copyrighted and published material that is not "public domain" - that's piracy.
3) we'll never cut our mullets (check)
"Oh, you are one of those people. Metallica cut their hair! They must suck now! Get over it! Have you ever had hair that long? I have, three times, and it really is a big pain in the ass to take care of. You really get to the point where you get sick of the hair and just chop it off."
- CONTRARY! I've never had long hair, and I've never liked long hair! It's probably the best career move they ever made. But again, it's one of those statements that the band made, promised to their fans... back in the day - and they broke it.
(2) we'll never record a ballad (check)
"When did they say this? True Metallica fans will recall that on the album Ride the Lightening there was a little song named Fade to Black. That qualifies as a ballad to me. And that was released when, '83 or '84?"
You're obviously not musically inclined if you consider "Fade to Black" a ballad.
(1) We'll never do a video (check)
"True. I think they are still kicking themselves for having said this, and also kicking themselves for not having done a video sooner."
Probably - but this is another example of Jaymz and the boyz putting their feet in their mouth.
I don't have axe to grind with Metallica. I couldn't give a damn about them. I'm not a fan, never really was. Growing up, alot of my friends were metal heads - so I was constantly bombarded with Metallica informationa and factoids. If they broke up tomorrow it wouldn't phase me one bit.
The only thing I am bringing to light is the fact that they are hypocrites, and they are doing a wonderful job of alienating their fan base. I have a full time job, I BUY the music I like, and I have never used napster.
And I'm not going to be baited along by the U2 comment. I will just close by saying that like Metallica - the best thing these bands have done was re-invent themselves and grew (musically) with the times rather than stagnate and be left behind like their peers.
If you're allowing people to record your concerts - you're allowing musical piracy.... thus you are pro-theft.
Whether it's recorded in the studio or live is irrelevant. You should contact someone at ASCAP or BMI and learn a little bit about musical copyrights.
Remember - they've been hypocrites before (1) We'll never do a video (check) (2) we'll never record a ballad (check) (3) we'll never cut our mullets (check) and now... (4) we don't care if our fans illegally tape and trade our music (check)
You can't seem to understand that you once were pro-piracy and now you're anti-piracy... just like on Charlie Rose.... Wait a minute - is this you LARS?
I'm not even too sure of this, but I could almost swear that Mulletica...erm... Metallica played "in the round" and had a "bootlegger's pit" when they toured to support (what I believe to be) their "black album"(how Spinal Tap!).
So can we say hypocrite?
How can you control how your music is distributed when you PREVIOUSLY allowed people to come in and bootleg your concerts!?!?!?
Lars, stick to drumming and being one of the most annoying rock stars since David Lee Roth... and leave copyright law to the lawyers. You've alienated a good percentage of your fan base.
I'm actually quite concerned over how the breakup of Micro$oft will affect the general computer user.
My concern stems from the Bell System break up in the 1980's. My father worked for the Bell System for 34 years, and I worked for one of the RBOC's for 5. I remember how "great" the Bell System was, and I saw how much things had changed for the worse while working for one of the regional bells. The Bell System was a monopoly, and IMHO a necessity. Since the breakup, the only people who have suffered was the common citizen with inflated local rates, long distance and interlata charges, and more frustration because of the budgetary constraints of the RBOC's. Back in the days of the Bell System, if you ordered a telephone line, it was installed within a day or two. It takes up to three weeks or more nowadays to get a tech to come to the door because of budgetary cutbacks.
Anyway - what I'm trying to say is that I am curious on how the MS breakup will affect the rest of us. As a Linux user, I'm even more concerned.
I ponder on whether MS is a necessary evil, as was the Bell System. *hmm*
"But Legge didn't dismiss all of Sony's claims. He still has to issue a final ruling on charges that Connectix stole trade secrets and unfairly competed with Sony." - the Wired article
So what's gonna happen if they stole trade secrets???
These corporate entities are abusing the copyright laws... and the little people are the ones who suffer. These lawyers are just sophists looking to stuff their mattress. Shameful at best.
Mulder already found out what happened to his sister. And didn't you see what happened when that guy wanted his brother back?
The Djinn(sp) was angry that she made her wish, and thus cursed every subsequent wish that she was to grant, no matter how specific the wish was made. Mulder ended the viscious cycle by giving the Djinn back her mortality.
Personally - I wish that they'd let the X-Files end. I've spent the past 7 or so years glued to my television set watching my 2 favorite agents, and this past year's episodes were embarrassing at best. I'd be happy with a movie or two... either that or start writing better scripts!
Don't make any copies of any Metallica(tm) DVD's or Lars is gonna get ya!
There's a special chip inside each of these devices that sends a special signal to Lars via mental telepathy.
Not only will he come and get you (and hold you upside down and shake you until your wallet falls out) but each signal that he recieves makes him even MORE annoying.
I just went down to the comca$t office today to trade in my old Motorola Cybrsurfr for a General Instruments SURFboard SB3100 Cable modem. It's SUPPOSED to give me better bandwidh. Anyway - hope your move went as smooth as mine! -Sonicboom
The Atari 1020 printer! Hooked up to my Atari 800! I've also got some great games on casette and floppy! Anyone up for Star Raiders or Crush Crumble and Chomp???
Seriously tho... wouldn't it be cheaper to put a TV decoder card in your PC ($80-$100) and print to the printer already purchased for your PC than to get a TV-ready printer?!?
*lol* This doesn't even look real! It makes those backyard UFO photos (tin pie dish upside down on a string) look that much MORE believable.
News? Hardly.... unless there's a giant space dog that's looking for this New Jersey-sized bone. Lets just hope he doesn't decide to bury it here on earth!
I'm afraid that the boot messages will say "Linux is brought to you by Coca-Cola.com, Transmeta.com, GE.com, Snapple.com Doritos.com, BMW.com omahasteaks.com aol.com home.net netscape.com and Napster.com ".
I remember reading a while back that 2 stolen laptops were recovered that were running the RC5 keycracking client for distributed.net
The client flushes keys to a keyserver and gives the IP address of where the keys are being sent from. Those keys are also flushed with the user's e-mail ID.
When keys w/ a certain e-mail ID come in, the distributed.net people could go through the keyserver logs and trace the flushed/fetched keys to an IP address. Traceroute/nslookup - then contact ISP - THe jackass using the stolen notebook is probably using it from his home.
I don't remember if they were running the CLI or the GUI, and whether it was running in "hidden" mode or not.
But we've already got Laptop lojack! Thanks to Nugget and the distributed.net people!
Locking out IRCnet is pointless. Especially announcing their actions. The people that they are trying to affect have time to plan, and will move to some other IRC network (EFnet, Undernet, FEFnet, etc...). So the only people getting shat upon is the legit users. Is IRCnet run by the.gov or something??? Cos that's a jackass move!
- no! That's piracy - a free t-shirt or ltd. edition cd or keychain upon admission to a concert would be giving something to the fans. The taping of a live performance of copyrighted and published material that is not "public domain" - that's piracy.

I guess they were against theft back then too. They're a bunch of f***ing hypocrites!
Get your facts straight.
Now it's all about Timmy!
TIMMMAY!!!
I'd pay to see Micro$oft's legal team choke this one down... and I can't wait to read the creative answers that they give!
Good Job!
So can we say hypocrite?

Lars, stick to drumming and being one of the most annoying rock stars since David Lee Roth... and leave copyright law to the lawyers. You've alienated a good percentage of your fan base.
The next tour will have banners like Spinal Tap:
"Puppet Show with Metallica"
...but this sounds like another swinging door for legislators to walk in and censor the internet.
.gov and their legal vultures should keep their mitts off the internet and start worrying about more important issues at hand.
AFAIK The US
Lowering taxes, better schools, more funding for PBS... etc...

So what's gonna happen if they stole trade secrets???

Woe to thee who crosses the annoying mullet-man!
Seriously tho - this is a COOL idea! Too bad this is probably about as illegal as re-selling warez!

Sounds like technology is going backwards...

ATH0
...and I hear that Al Gore will put a patent on his greatest invention... The INTERNET.
Sounds like something out of the X-Files... kinda like that Palm Pilot-like gizmo that Krychek(sp) used to make Skinner sicker and/or better.
Even so... Big Blue gets big kudos for this one. (Pizazz? oh brother!)
Maybe I'll bust open the wallet and purchase a Palm Pilot one of these days and check this thing out!
*lol*

I'll stick to my AMD 5x86-133pr75
Probably the BEST CPU that AMD ever made!
Greedy ass cocksuckin bastards!
Maybe stop charging $20 for a cd, and $30+ for a concert ticket!
Maybe they'll be able to stop people from making casette tapes and trading them... oh wait! They've already tried that!
*grumble*
They're all assholes!
Now to install some cool games and have some phun with it!
blarg.
Click here for a great web site on mullets!
