  6. Better streaming services needed on Microsoft Readies a Rival To Spotify · · Score: 1

I think good music streaming services is what will get many pirates to pay for their music, be it by a subscription or by listening to Commercials. While there are now some good non-DRM music to buy online, I usually wish to listen to hundreds of new tracks each month. At around 1$/track this would limit my listening in a fashion I would not consider. Streaming music on the other hand could work, since I would listen to any amount of music available. It also has the advantage of the music being available immediately instead of in a very short time.

Currently I use Spotify, and it seem to be the best streaming service available as of yet. It is still however too limited both when it comes to the amount of music available and the functions of the client. Allowing plugins could fix most of the limitations of the client however. I really hope more and better streaming options becomes available.

While I've read articles here before about the problem of lacking competition between ISPs offering wired connections, I can't see the problem of companys competing over and improving wireless networking.

Here in Sweden we've had HSPA 7.2 since 2006, covering most of the country, with a much lower population density. Some ISPs are currently upgrading to 150Mps 4g, which will be available later this year.

  10. I watched the trial, and I agree! on Judge In Pirate Bay Trial Biased · · Score: 2, Informative

IANAL, but I have watched the whole trial and I most agree with you that the prosecution could not ever prove any crime was commited.

As far as I understand, all charges for actually breaking any laws had to be dropped because they would simply not hold. When these charges were dropped, much time was spent explaining that they had lost income due to piracy. This could however not be proven either. They put forth studys that said the decline was due to piracy, and the defense countered with studys saying that it could not be linked to piracy.

An intresting counter argument from one of the studys was that most of the decrease in income by the music industry was matched by an increase in income of the artists. A possible reason for the decline thus is that a shift away from the music industry was happening. I wont try to find and read this study, but the expert pointing out this fact said something about a five-year span and that the industry had lost one billion dollar in, I assume, annual income. I'm not sure if this only accounts for american artists or certain industrys. My question is if it sounds likely that the income of the artists have increased by half this amount during what I think was 2002-2006? If so, this is a shift I'm glad to see!

Anyway, proof that they lose money due to piracy, or even piracy on TPB in particular, does not make TPB guilty unless they have made any crime. They could not prove this, and still all the accused get pretty much the harshest possible punishment!

As for the first paragraphs, Starcraft II will be out in a not too far future. It is said to play on the same conditions as the player, and I expect Blizzard to not do a poor AI. As for the micro management I dont think its too unfair to let it be near unlimited for the higher difficulties. If we dont mind massive RTS games such as those mentioned by vadim_t below, the APM (actions per minute) goes towards the maximum usable APM as players improve their skills. The excess APM that the AI has gives diminishing results.

  17. Re:depends on the stupidity on Believable Stupidity In Game AI · · Score: 1

My thoughts exactly. Major games grow larger, more complex and arguably more non-linear. This calls for more content and available AI actions for each unit. For linear games, scripting most scenarios is fine. For not so linear games, to achieve both realism and not having to write an excess of scripting, AI must be getting more generic.

A gaming inteligence quotient actually sounds quite interesting. I could just assume there is such a thing for chess, thou ofcourse implemention dependent.

This article is however about how difficulty settings of games should not be regulated by clock speed or simular variables alone. The process of determining this quotient would probably be better achieved by other means mentioned, unless it is more a test of the particular AI implemention relative to the intelligence.

  19. Re:So stupid no human would do that? on Believable Stupidity In Game AI · · Score: 1

Part of this problem is that even if humans occasionally do horribly stupid mistakes, this remings the person about the opponents inhumanity. As for horrible mistakes resulting from the randomness, the person thinks the AI is doing an overly stupid mistake in order to compensate for its inhuman accurasy. The same is true if the AI does a very smart or near-perfect move due to randomness, the AIs perfect accurasy instantly comes to mind.
