    78 is only 84 in base10.857143 or alternativly you could redefine '7' and '8'.

    Probably very long......
    There are very little volatile-memory related software bugs.....
    HINT: You don't want your ram back in the same corrupt state it was in before the reboot.

    No, but its a step closer to a high degree of coverage.
    Also this one is free... Most existing links are incredibly expensive for the the Africans due to the absence of fair peering agrements.

    Unfortunatly making tcp connections is very hard without broadcasting your ip address.
    (Not counting the usage of proxies ofcourse, but then the proxies could also be blocked)

    Luxemburg has such a small number of residents that a few coders more or less can have a huge impact on the number.

    Likely overkill?
    Unless you have a gigabit pipe thats a lot of overkill.
    Both tasks could easily be done by a single 486.
    I have a 200Mhz pentium at my house doing the same and act as a fileserver too. The only reason its that fast is that I didn't have anything slower with an usb port (for the wlan interface)

    I never said I agree with the popular criteria of child porn. I agree that just looking like a child doesn't make it child porn. The definition varies a lot between people (e.g. animated child porn).

    As for 'anything can be proven by careful selection of data'.... ofcourse bad science is a posibility.
    If you are paranoid enough all science is corrupt.
    At a certain point you have to trust others to do research for you. If this is done open enough and criticism is possible a society can accept it as the best approximation of the truth and act according to it...
    The perfect ruleset doesn't exist yet, but we are capable of learning and might arrive at it sometime in the future.

    I don't know how it is in your country but here (The Netherlands) you have a right to expect certain things from a product when you buy it.

    E.g. If the seller sold you a tv set you may expect it to behave as a tv set. Even if the seller only gives 1 year of waranty you can expect a tv set to last longer than that and still have rights to e.g refund (although partial) or repair if it brakes after 2 years.

    If the seller gave the impression that he was selling a Wifi wap with a secure management interface the buyer has a right to asume a certain level of security.

    The user changing a password and thereby closing the backdoor is a good idea.
    The company changing a backdoor password into another but keeping the backdoor is a bad idea.

    'age of consent' is indeed a government imposed idea in the way that there isn't some magic moment in a persons live... But it can be proven that children (without setting an exact age border) can be influenced far more than adults. (the fact that some adults stay this way is an indication that the real age of consent may never come).
    It can also be proven that being forced into consent can lead to severe trauma on a later age.

    There are a lot of laws still around from times when it was normal to force the believes of the majority upon the rest.

    I personally would not have a problem if people were walking around naked.
    Just because it is not the way I would do things doesn't mean it should be banned. Maybe it is time people accepted that sometimes you are going to see or hear things you don't like and that they just have to deal with it.

    Basicly the only rules you need are those that ensure that a society runs well: e.g
    - killing is bad
    - stealing is bad
    - free speach is good
    - x isn't allowed because it is dangerous to you or the public

    Thats the worst reason for censoring....

    Free speach should only be limited if it poses a real thread to the public.
    Things like child porn.
    If you argued that the goat.cx picture would in severe mental problems with those who saw it you might have a point.
    But simply cesnoring because the majority doesn't like it is completly wrong.

    Lets abolish property rights to....
    It is not the provence of the government to censor the use of land. It is not appropriate that only the rich and the priviliged are able to afford building a house and able to farm.

    Does that sound stupid yet? Its the same with the RF spectrum.... If you let anybody use it unrestricted you get mini (or not so mini) wars were neighbours are fighting over who can use a piece of land to plant roses.

    SSH and SSL encryption migh make your connection slow... but usually only if you are pumpint huge amounts of data or your computer is crap.
    But most Wireless chipsets have WEP in the hardware (or atleast in firmware) and don't give a performance loss at all.

    WEP can be cracked... but it requires an effort.
    The key in protecting something is to make the time needed to get in as long as possible.
    Without wep most cards will join a network within seconds, with wep you are already save for most wardrivers (they are usually not warparkers).

    MAC filtering as you mentioned is an even bigger security hole than wep. Look up the 'hwaddr' option in the ifconfig man page.

    The combination of no beacons, mac filtering and wep will make your network such a hard target that it will take a considerable effort for someone to use it.

    The workings of bullets has been well known for a long time... It didn't make them less used though.

    The only military developments you need to keep secret are attack weapons. And you only need those if you plan to start a war. A trully enlightented nation would only build defensive weapons and wouldn't think about starting a war. It would also have a lot less enemies since it wouldn't piss off everybody by being selfish arogant bastards.
