Uhhh...huh? There are probably tens of thousands of such studies. There are entire journals dedicated to such studies. Thousands of sociologists, psychologists, anthropologists, and psychiatrists who have dedicated their careers to doing such studies. Why do you and everyone else here who has posted the same accusation assume that just because one study is about video games they all are?
...4 percent hispanic, less than 3 percent black. but what I really want to know is...
Where da asians at?
Well there's a real puzzler, how on earth are we going to solve that complicated mathematical question? What we need to do is form a crack team of Fields-medal winning mathematical prodigies to dedicate the next few years of their life on figuring that out.
Which disturbs you more? That Rockstar makes the games, or that people buy them?
Neither disturbs me especially, I was simply remarking that's something that Rockstar can do to avoid criticism.
Humanities dark side is more intriguing to me and many other people. Sales show it. And when is the last time you saw a study on the behavior of people with the characteristics of a monk or saint as opposed to the severly depressed or psychotic?
The best games are the ones that have some sort of ethical or philosophical component. Ultima, Ico, FF, Deus Ex, etc. Rockstar has an immensely talented development team, it would be nice to see them try to transcend the gratuitous violence and make something more important. And the psychotic really aren't that interesting or that deep.
Possible. Something else to consider, though: GTA doesn't just allow you to commit vandalism, it also deals you consequences for your actions. Run over pedestrians, police chase you. I'll tell you something, once you've gained three stars in that game, the Police turn into real bastards. They keep coming, they never give up, and your chances of survival have more to do with luck than skill. I can imagine kids saying "Well, that was fun, but man I never wanna piss off the cops."
Yes, and in GTA you face the extreme punishment of having the police take a little of your money and putting you immediately back on the streets. There are very few serious consequences in that game. Which is kind of dumb, it would be a lot cooler if there were, it would add an additional level of adrenaline.
Nobody can design a rocket that can get you to the moon. The way NASA does it is get a bunch of people, each who can know how to design one part of a rocket, and put them together.
Oh, and if I had $100m, I wouldn't give a flying f*** about rockets. I'd be way too busy swimming in my money bin anyway, and that ass who does my flying would just crash it.
Damn straight. Anyway I wouldn't trust the young, nubile, gold-digging women who I would surround myself with in my mansion without me. I leave it to go to the moon and they might steal the silverware.
Clinton won't run. She's a smart lady, she knows she would never, ever win. She's hit the high point of her career, and since being in the Senate is a pretty damn impressive thing to do with your life, I think she'll be content with that.
So, where is the unfunny/insensitive/tasteless mod when you need it?
Well on slashdot generally unfunny posts are modded as "funny", insensitive posts are modded as "informative", and tasteless posts are modded as "insightful".
That's why I specified most. It seems that too many OSS developers prefer adding new features to refining what's already been written. It makes perfect sense, the former is usually a lot more interesting than the latter. But at the end of the day you get software that often seems kludged together.
Thank you for your invitation, but at this point it is unnecessary. We have already frozen your assets here on earth. If we cannot retrieve the money you owe completely from there, we will simply garnish your wages from your employer. Enjoy your stay in space.
Your third-to-last point is the most important to me. The unions are ruining teaching by ensuring that bad teachers can't ever be gotten rid of, and good teachers can't ever be hired.
I think that's a generalization and for the most part incorrect. Teacher's unions aren't nearly as powerful as people think, and I dare you to find me a single school district in the country where teachers can't be fired.
Eh, don't see the big deal. I was able to play HL2 on what is essentially a geforce2 (geforce4 MX 440 Go) and while it wasn't on especially high detail it was fine.
You don't have to, and LMI won't come after you, but it's theoretically possible that another company who DID license the name will come after you.
How about a general study on family environments?
Uhhh...huh? There are probably tens of thousands of such studies. There are entire journals dedicated to such studies. Flight 1979 to Funkytown now boarding.
Everyone say it together with me: "Phase velocity vs Group velocity"
No.
1. Redesign chip architecture 2. ???? 3. ???? 4. Profit!
2. Sell the chips.
3. Deduct expenses from revenues gained by selling chips.

I can't wait to see their contributions. Oh wait, you mean they are just demanding and doing nothing?
Corporate guy: I need these commercial programs.
OSS zealot: Ditch those programs, you can get superior open-source alternatives for free, I promise.
Corporate guy: Alright, if you promise then I guess I will. Do you have an OSS replacement for this program?
OSS zealot: NO! MAKE IT YOURSELF YOU BASTARD!

How will Rockstar handle the additional pressure being put upon it?
Start making games that don't appeal only to what is worst in humanity?

$580 million? Are they insane? Yes, they are. It's not worth it. It never will be worth it. Ever.
The use of words expressing something other than their lit-er-al inteeention,

Canada has always been more progressive and ahead of everyone else -- this is coming from a Texan!
Well obviously if you're a Texan everyone seems more progressive.

So, in order to be a successful desktop OS, linux needs to be more user-friendly. Film at 11.
Yes, seems obvious, but most of the developers never seem to actually listen to it when it's said.

Can someone please explain the slashdot story title to me? The price of exclusivity? Where's the exclusivity?
